Alisha Boe Gives Kristine Froseth a Wedding Day Pep Talk in 'The Buccaneers' Season 2 Sneak Peek [Exclusive]
Image
At long last, Season 2 of The Buccaneers is almost here on Apple TV+ to pick up with the titular young American women after their explosion onto the scene in Gilded Age London back in 2023. Although things began in high spirits as the ambitious and extroverted friends navigated English high society and courted suitors, the Season 1 finale left things on a bleak note, with each of the women forced to accept a reality they did not desire. Chief among them is Nan (Kristine Frøseth), who marries a man she doesn't love to become the Duchess of Tintagel, the most influential woman in the country, to protect her sister, Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse), from the wrath of her abusive husband. Collider now has an exclusive sneak peek from the premiere showing how Nan is dealing with the fallout of giving up the rest of her life with a little support from Conchita (Alisha Boe...

Who Is Justin Eely? One Day's Dedication Explained
Image
A dedication in the One Day series finale credits is made to Justin Eely, a finishing editor who worked on all 14 episodes. Eely's work history includes projects like Belgravia, Killing Eve, Good Omens, Sherlock, and Black Mirror. Eely was an avid runner, Ironman Triathlon winner, and had a daughter. Details about his death are unknown.

In the credits of One Day’s series finale, there is a dedication made to the memory of Justin Eely — but who is he exactly and how was he involved in the show? The Netflix series, adapted from the popular novel by David Nicholls by showrunner Nicole Taylor, has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Throughout its 14-episode season, One Day follows Leo Woodall’s Dexter Mayhew and Ambika Mod’s Emma Morley, dropping in on their lives every July 15 over the course of nearly 20 years.

And while every episode includes credits detailing...

Netflix's New Romantic Show Is Miles Better Than Anne Hathaway's Movie On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Netflix's TV adaptation of One Day has a 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, while the movie version has only 35%. The series follows the same premise as the 2011 movie, with strong performances from Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall. The show's episode count allows for a deeper investment in the central relationship, resulting in a memorable romance drama.

The new Netflix romantic drama One Day is getting much stronger reviews than the Anne Hathaway movie version. Released in 2011 and based on the book of the same name by David Nicholls, the One Day movie adaptation centers on Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess) and Emma Morley (Hathaway) meeting on the same day for over 20 years. Nicholls also wrote the screenplay, with Lone Scherfig as the director. The rest of the cast included Patricia Clarkson, Ken Stott, and Romola Garai.

Netflix’s ‘One Day’ Remake Will Rip Your Heart Out (Complimentary)
Image
As I queued up the first episode of Netflix’s “One Day,” I was reminded of the words of a great man: “I am ready to get hurt again.”

“One Day” of course shares its title and source material with David Nicholls’ 2009 novel and Lone Scherfig’s 2011 film — but in Nicole Taylor’s episodic version (executive produced by Nicholls) starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall, the story finds its wings, telling the story of Emma (Mod) and Dexter (Woodall) over decades with a snapshot of just one day in the year.

The episodic structure lends itself beautifully to Nicholls’ premise, letting each year breathe and allowing viewers to settle into Emma and Dex’s shifting dynamics — and by extension, the wider world of nebulous relationships. There is the night they (almost) slept together, the day they miss each other’s calls, the trip to Europe (with one bed), the catastrophic...

One Day | Trailer released for Netflix adaptation of David Nicholls’ novel
David Nicholls in One Day (2011)
David Nicholls’ romance One Day has been adapted for the screen for a second time, this time on Netflix: here’s the trailer.

Novelist David Nicholls has had considerable success as a screenwriter, from penning episodes of Cold Feet and BBC dramas The 7:39 and Aftersun to adapting his own novels Starter For Ten and Us.

His most well known novel, One Day, was previously adapted into a 2011 film by Nicholls himself. Directed by Lobe Scherfig, it saw Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess take on the central roles of Emma and Dexter, alongside Patricia Clarkson, Ken Stott and Romola Garai. It received middling reviews which particularly criticized Hathaway’s Yorkshire accent.

A new adaptation is heading to Netflix, this time as a limited series. The synopsis reads as follows:

Netflix’s adaptation of One Day tells the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew who, on July 15th 1988, the night of their graduation,...

Starred Up, Labor Day, Yves Saint Laurent: this week's new films
Starred Up | Labor Day | Yves Saint Laurent | Gbf | The Robber | The Machine | Salvo | The Unknown Known | A Long Way Down

Starred Up (18)

(David Mackenzie, 2013, UK) Jack O'Connell, Ben Mendelsohn, Rupert Friend. 106 mins

We've seen enough prison movies to know the drill, but this is closer to A Prophet than The Great Escape – a bracing mix of brutal thriller, institutional critique and complex character drama. Conviction is key, both in the day-to-day details and the natural performances, particularly O'Connell – a young offender violent enough to be housed with the grown-ups, including his own father. It feels like things could kick off with every scene.

Labor Day (12A)

(Jason Reitman, 2013, Us) Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Gattlin Griffith. 111 mins

The Juno director tries nuanced domestic drama – and it doesn't really suit him. Erotic tremors are a given when Brolin's escaped convict shacks up with Winslet's lonely single mum, but you'll need to park your disbelief.

Eiff 2013: Svengali Review
Many television programmes have made the leap to cinema over the years, but this is surely the first time that a Welsh internet series has branched out onto the big screen.

Svengali sees YouTube stars Dixie (Jonny Owen) and Shell (Vicky McClure) relocate to London so that the former can realise his dream of managing a great rock band. With an old friend already making a name for himself in the industry, and coincidence leaving him with Alan McGee’s phone number, Dixie is convinced that his time has come, and that it’s now or never.

Writer, producer and star, Jonny Owen has done an undeniably admiral job adapting the series for cinema audiences, even managing to breathe some life into what is a relatively tired narrative convention. Dixie is a likeable lead, forever running through the streets of London with his trusty Tesco carrier bags and a near-endless...

Martin Freeman Making Cameo In ‘Svengali’; ‘Lost’ Actor Harold Perrineau Latest Addition to New Kathryn Bigelow Film
There probably isn’t much concern about The Hobbit‘s financial viability, nor is there a lot of contemplation on how it should affect Martin Freeman‘s career. If anything, the British thespian is showing signs of a normal trajectory — a big film here, some TV there (the excellent Sherlock, for one), and little films while he’s still at it. So, in a deviation from the world of J.R.R. Freeman, McClure Visit A "Svengali"
Martin Freeman ("The Hobbit," "Sherlock"), Vicky McClure ("This Is England") and Michael Smiley ("Kill List") have all scored roles in a feature comedy adaptation of the hit Youtube series "Svengali" for Root Films says Screen Daily.

The story follows a Welshman (Jonny Owen) who travels to London to fulfill his dream of becoming the manager of the world's coolest band.

Owen and co-writer Dean Cavanagh produced nine 'webisodes' in the series which used real-life rock stars and music business personalities along with some familiar British actors like Jodie Whittaker ("Attack the Block"), Sean Harris ("The Borgias") and Matt Berry ("The It Crowd").

Freeman previously appeared in the online shorts and will reprise his role in a cameo which he'll shoot between his "Hobbit" filming commitments in New Zealand.

John Hardwick makes his directorial debut on the project which begins a six-week shoot in London next week.
