Carol Kirkwood in Breakfast (2000)

Carol Kirkwood

BBC Breakfast makes amusing weather map blunder
Image
BBC Breakfast experienced what appeared to be an amusing production blunder on Tuesday (4 April) during a weather segment.

At 8am, the news and current affairs series introduced presenter Carol Kirkwood, who issued a brief update on the weather forecast.

However, though she was discussing the weather in the UK, the map behind her was in fact an unlabelled image of Spain and Portugal.

“Good morning,” she began. “It’s a cold and frosty start to the day for many of us today. But there’s a fair bit of sunshine away from the north and west, where we’ve got thicker cloud and some rain.”

She went on to give a brief update on the weather for the Bank Holiday weekend, before teasing a more extensive weather report later in the programme – all while the map of Spain remained unchanged behind her.

The mishap didn’t escape the notice of BBC Breakfast viewers,...

Presenter Jon Kay ‘banned’ from BBC Breakfast discussion by co-host
Image
BBC Breakfast host Sally Nugent “banned” her co-host Jon Kay from a discussion on the latest episode.

On Monday (6 February), Nugent said she was unable to “have a conversation” with Kay as she was concerned that he might share some Happy Valley spoilers.

The BBC drama’s latest run drew to an end on Sunday (5 February), with an acclaimed finale that brought the entire series to a close.

On BBC Breakfast, Carol Kirkwood said she was planning to swiftly leave the studio after delivering her weather update as she didn’t want to hear the hosts’ Happy Valley discussion.

However, Nugent, when Kirkwood told her she hadn’t yet seen the finale, replied: “Carol, neither have I! I haven’t seen the ending. So do not worry, we are safe! I give you my word.”

However, Kay replied: “I’ve watched it and I can’t speak to anybody about it.

Strictly Come Dancing 2015 winner: We rank the celebrities' chances of topping BBC One's dance-off
Strictly Come Dancing had another classic Halloween episode this weekend, but of course it was scarier for some of the celebrities than others. But who looks like they might be out of the running and who is creeping closer to that Glitter Ball trophy?

Out of the running: Kirsty Gallacher

Well, this seems particularly cruel. Kirsty had finally started to turn things around last week and was creeping up our rankings… but then her Halloween Charleston went horribly wrong with slips and mistakes and she picked up her lowest score of the series before becoming the first woman to be booted out (she joins the series' other eliminees Iwan Thomas, Anthony Ogogo, Daniel O'Donnell and Ainsley Harriott). Bad luck, Kirsty.

10. Jamelia (⬇3)

It doesn't seem quite fair to have Jamelia at the bottom of the rankings. She's far from the worst dancer in the competition and she's been improving, too, but...

Strictly's Jeremy Vine: "Carol Kirkwood's been a revelation - she was absolutely certain she'd be first out"
Strictly Come Dancing's Jeremy Vine has described Carol Kirkwood as a "revelation" and revealed who he thinks deserves to win the ballroom dancing competition.

The 50-year-old BBC broadcaster - who performed the salsa to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' on the show last night - told Digital Spy: "The two standing out - in terms of they've had no previous experience but are brilliant - are Katie Derham and Anita Rani.

"And my friend Carol Kirkwood was absolutely certain she'd be first out. She's got a little bit more confidence every time I see her and she's enjoying it a lot more.

"Carol's been a revelation. At the beginning she was feeling like she would be placed last but actually she's done more than held her own."

The BBC Radio Two DJ admitted that while he'd love to win, The Wanted's Jay McGuiness, Country File's Rani and former contestant Olympian...

Strictly Come Dancing: All the Halloween week dances and scores
It's Halloween week on Strictly Come Dancing, with scary make-up and spooky props aplenty.

But who brought a bit of magic to the dance floor, and who had a monstrous night? Find out with our round-up of the scores and comments from judges Craig Revel Horwood, Darcey Bussell, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli - and you can relive every dance below:

1. Katie Derham & Anton Du Beke dancing the paso doble to 'Phantom of the Opera' by Steve Harley and Sarah Brightman: 4+6+6+5=21

Len: "The problem is you're like an English rose and the paso is a cactus, sharp aggressive and spiky. It doesn't really suit your personality. I got the willies at one time when I thought you would use the wrong foot. It wasn't great, Kate - I wish it was."

Darcey: "You look the part – absolutely stunning. To help strengthen your performance use those beautiful eyes.

Strictly Come Dancing 2015: Carol Vorderman backs 'brilliant' Carol Kirkwood
Strictly Come Dancing star Carol Kirkwood has received the backing of a former contestant - Carol Vorderman.

Vorderman took part in the show in 2004 and told the Daily Express that she loves watching her namesake.

"She's doing brilliantly, isn't she?" she said. "Also with Carol, she hasn't been trained in a stage school and is such a lovely lady. I think it's unfair that you have stage school graduates... there should be some handicap somewhere.

"You just can't compare! It's like having someone that has swum for their county and another who hasn't swum before and telling them to have a race."

And while Kirkwood hasn't quite managed to win over the judges yet, Vorderman added: "She's very gracious when it comes to criticism. She shouldn't be criticised though - people should be encouraged."

Kirkwood will be attempting to pick up high scores with her rumba to The Partridge Family...

Strictly Come Dancing 2015: Carol Kirkwood was banned from smiling in her paso doble... which made her laugh
Strictly Come Dancing star Carol Kirkwood has revealed that she nearly giggled her way through the paso doble.

The BBC Weather presenter - who picked up her highest score of the series for her paso - admitted that it was tough to get into character for the moody dance.

"Just before we went on to the floor, [my partner] Pasha [Kovalev] came up while the Vt was playing, took my head in his hands and said, 'Do not smile, do not laugh for the next 90 seconds'," she said on Strictly: It Takes Two. "Which of course made me laugh immediately. But then just looking at him because he was so 'grr' all the way through it, that really helped."

And Carol revealed that she "really enjoyed" the dance, adding: "I think that was the first time I felt I was actually doing something because it was so alien to my normal life and my normal face.

Strictly Come Dancing: Who was throwing up and who is the most popular pro? 10 things you didn't see on TV
We bathed in glitter, donned some lycra and quickstepped our way down to the Strictly Come Dancing studios on Friday night for the very first live show of the series - and it was just as exciting as we'd hoped.

But while we were obviously thrilled by the dances and entertained by the judges, there were a few things that the cameras didn't pick up:

1. The audience get warmed up in the best way

It's not particularly surprising that the audience are played music while they're waiting for the show to begin. What's brilliant is that all the songs are dancing-related. 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody', 'Dance The Night Away' and 'Dancing In The Moonlight' were among the tunes pumped out over the sound system.
