Much has been made about how filmmaker Ti West has reinvented and refreshed the slasher genre by paying homage to the classics in his A24 trilogy X, Pearl and the upcoming MaXXXine. His leading lady, Mia Goth, agrees with the praise and adds that the back-to-back-to-back gigs have also reshaped something else — her career.
“The work has given me a whole new level of confidence that I hadn’t had before,” the 30-year-old actress told The Hollywood Reporter while standing outside the Tcl Chinese Theatre minutes before the June 24 world premiere. “It changed me forever.”
Specifically, Goth points to playing the title character Pearl in the technicolor gore-fest that served as the prequel to 2022’s X and was released the same year. X found Goth playing Maxine, a young porn actress who in 1979 accompanies pals from the adult film industry to a remote Texas farmhouse, where an elderly couple is revealed to be savage hosts.

Easily one of the best movies of its kind, J.A. Bayona’s minute-by-minute tale of survival poses an immediate challenge to audiences: could I survive that? The genuinely terrifying true story of one family lost in the middle of a devastating disaster is even more relevant now, with similar disasters seemingly happening daily. The near-flawless direction concentrates on the direct experience of a mother and son, who in just a couple of days learn the meaning of human concern and kindness. It’s a Spanish production (in English); Naomi Watts received an Oscar nomination and Ewan McGregor and young Tom Holland give strong performances. We reach back ten years for this review.

There’s no denying that Tom Holland is one of Hollywood’s darlings and it’s easy to see why thanks to his lovable, easy-going personality and tendency for quirky behavior. What you may not know, however, is that before Holland suited up to play Spider-Man in the McU or turned in an awe-inspiring performance in The Devil All the Time, he starred in an often overlooked film when he was just a young teen and as expected, he knocked it out of the park.
Directed by J.A. Bayona and written by Sergio G. Sánchez, The Impossible is a 2012 disaster drama based on the true story of Maria Belón and her family who endured the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami together. Holland plays the eldest son, 13-year-old Lucas, and he’s joined by heavy hitters like Naomi Watts as Maria and Ewan McGregor as her husband Henry.

Sergio G. Sánchez is best known as co-writer of The Orphanage, certainly one of the best horror films of recent years, with its gothic setting, and themes of past traumas haunting the present. In his feature directorial debut, he returns to some of these same themes and devices to great effect. Marrowbone Siblings Jack, Billy, Jane, and Sam have moved from England to an American coastal town with their mother Rose (Nicola Harrison) to escape an abusive father/husband. But Rose dies shortly after their arrival, and in order to make sure the children stay together, they must hide out for several months, until Jack turns 21 and can take legal guardianship of the family. Only Jack...

There’s nothing quite as creepy as a parentless gang of gaunt children, and the one assembled in “Marrowbone” is played by talent from some of the greatest horror movies and TV shows in recent memory. In the newly released trailer, a group of four siblings seek refuge in a dilapidated manor home by the seaside, where they discover a sinister force lurking in the floorboards. The directorial debut of Sergio G. Sánchez, the twisted mind behind the scripts for “The Orphanage” and “The Impossible,” “Marrowbone” is one chilling tale you won’t want to miss.
“We have come very far, enduring many hardships, but at last, we’ve found the place where we can be safe,” we hear in voiceover, over visually striking shots of green landscapes and sun-soaked laundry blowing in the breeze. Not everyone is charmed by the mysterious siblings, however: “These Marrowbone kids, how well do you know them?...

Here’s a question that kept popping up in my mind: did the writer of The Orphanage – one of the more unsettling and affective horror films from this century – really make this? The family drama, ambiguously supernatural scares, and tragic undercurrent from The Orphanage are all here, but filtered through a screenplay written by someone who must have been raised by wolves. Maybe this is a different Sergio G. Sánchez making this. Maybe this impostor lied on the application form. Either way, that situation is easier to believe than almost anything in Marrowbone.
Taking place in the late 1960s, Marrowbone opens with a prologue showing siblings Jack (George MacKay), Billy (Charlie Heaton), Jane (Mia Goth), and Sam (Matthew Stagg) arrive in a Us coastal town...

Filmmaker Juan Bayona will start filming the Jurassic World sequel next February
Five months ago, Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) was hired to direct the planned Jurassic World sequel. Before starting to film that movie, Focus Features is releasing Bayona’s third feature as a director, an adaptation of Patrick Ness’ A Monster Calls, starring Lewis MacDougall, Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver, Toby Kebbell and Liam Neeson, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival today.
When speaking to Bayona about the film earlier, Lrm asked whether he would be able to bring some of his regular Spanish crew over to Jurassic World 2, and we asked how it’s been going on the project, being that it will be his first straight-up studio film and one that's part of a major franchise as well.

Spanish filmmaker Fernando González Molina ("Three Steps Above Heaven") is set to helm the $13.5 million period drama "Palm Trees in the Snow" for Antena 3.
Sergio G. Sánchez ("The Impossible," "The Orphanage") penned the script based on the best-selling novel by Luz Gabas. Mario Casas leads the cast.
The story is set on an island off the west coast of Africa. A Spanish colony until 1968, the narrative swaps between the 1950s in the latter years of the Spanish rule, and the present day.
The 1950s scenes follow a man and his brother as they travel from the snowy Pyrenees to the exotic island where they learn true lessons in life. The present day elements focus on the man's daughter who travels to the island to learn about her father and uncle's younger years.
Mercedes Gamero will produce. Filming begins next June around Costa Rica and the Canary Islands ahead of a Christmas 2014 release.

Some films labeled as Oscar bait actually go on to win Oscars, but others simply get shunned for their supposed efforts to manipulate audiences. Sadly, Juan Antonia Bayona‘s The Impossible fell into the latter category. The film follows a vacationing family caught up in the 2004 tsunami that devastated coastal areas in Thailand, Indonesia and elsewhere, killing over 230,000 people in the process. The family’s experience is brought to immediate life through powerful performances and Bayona’s dedication to crafting terrifyingly realistic sequences. The film attracted criticism for casting Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts as part of a “whitewashing” of the true story, but that’s just people being willfully ignorant and missing the point of the film altogether. Instead the takeaway should simply be that this is a story of love, loss, hope and the realization that there is no guarantee of a tomorrow. Keep reading to see what I learned from the commentary track for...

Summit Entertainment (a division of Liongsate) has announced Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Impossible for Blu-Ray in April. The film stars Ewan McGregor and Oscar-nominated Naomi Watts.
The 2004 Thailand tsunami is without a doubt of the biggest disasters in recent history. One that shocked the entire world. The Impossible is director Juan Antonio Bayona’s way of showing the very human side of such a natural disaster. He brilliantly captures both the terror and scale of something as big as a tsunami, while stripping the film down to its barest moments, exposing just how important family is in times like these.
I rarely get emotional while watching films, because I’ve seen ‘em all before, but The Impossible had me damn close to the edge of breaking down. J.A. Bayona gets such strong performances out of Ewan McGregor and more important Naomi Watts. The two completely steal the show and...

It’s easy to be sceptical about ‘true story’ films. Too often, adaptations of real events contrive and exaggerate genuinely enthralling stories by turning them into blockbuster behemoths for cinematic effect. These films can lean heavily on the promise that the picture will present an actual occurrence, offering an ill-gotten backbone to the production when beneath, it holds little value at all. It is equally easy to be cynical about disaster films; in recent years, there has been sparse availability of entertaining catastrophe flicks and a sign of clear deterioration in the genre thanks in no small part to the nauseating farce that was 2012 (2009). Taking these things into consideration, The Impossible should be an unpalatable affair.
And yet, it’s quite the opposite.

The Impossible Directed by: Juan Antonio Bayona Written by: Sergio G. Sánchez (screenplay) and María Belón (story) Starring: Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts and Tom Holland I've seen a lot of movies during my life, but The Impossible was a first. It was the first critic screening that I almost walked out of. It’s not because it is a bad film, but ten minutes into the screening I wrestled with the notion that I might not be able to sit through the entire movie. As a mom and a human being, The Impossible is one of the most harrowing experiences I have ever sat through in the theaters. It's extremely well done, but it's misery porn from start to finish. Watch at your own risk. The Impossible is the fictionalized account of a family who survived the devastating tsunami that descended on Indonesian shores in 2004. The family that the story is based on is Spanish,...
