Hiroshi Shinagawa, Japanese comedian, director, screenwriter, and one-half of the comedy duo “Shinagawa Shoji,” will direct zombie mockumentary feature Among the Dead, Bloody Disgusting has learned. It’s the first screenplay from the freshly-minted father/daughter duo, Andy Cosby and Charlie Danger, collectively known as Midnight Pizza.

This will also be the first project emanating from the co-production and co-financing venture between US-based People of Culture Studios and Japan’s Yoshimoto Kogyo Co.

Among the Dead is an English-language Paranormal Activity-style found footage zombie movie written by esteemed comic book creator, film producer, and screenwriter Andy Cosby and Charlie Danger Cosby, along with some help from Brian Caldirola, Patrick Hasson and Juan Carlos Saizarbitoria.

“As the rest of the world finds its equilibrium in the aftermath of an undead apocalypse, one emotionally unstable man abandons friends and family to go live among the few remaining zombies before they’re all gone.

Final Cut, the French remake of writer/director Shin’ichirō Ueda’s highly acclaimed Japanese zombie comedy One Cut of the Dead, made its world premiere as the opening night film at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, then received a theatrical release in France in June. All these months later, we finally have some news about the film’s U.S. release. Variety reports that Kino Lorber has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to Final Cut, with their plan being to give the movie a theatrical release sometime in the summer. That will be followed by a digital and home video release on all major platforms.

The Cannes Film Festival said Monday that it backs the decision by French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius to change the name of his film, which originally carried the title Z (Comme Z) and will open the 75th edition of the festival next month.

Hazanavicius and his partners earlier in the day changed the name of the zombie comedy to Coupez! (Cut!). The international title remains Final Cut.

The “Z” in the title was billed as “a tribute to the genre film it echoes,” the festival said in a statement. “Since the letter Z has taken on a warlike meaning with the war of aggression waged against Ukraine by the Russian government, there can be no such confusion or ambiguity.”

The zombie comedy from the Oscar winning The Artist filmmaker will no longer play Sundance as the festival eliminates its live-edition and opts for virtual given the Omicron calamities of late.

The movie, which also stars The Artist Oscar nominee Bérénice Bejo follows a small film crew shooting a low budget zombie movie. Events go south when they are attacked by real zombies. Michel Hazanavicius directed and wrote off a story by Shin’ichirô Ueda and Ryoichi Wada.

Lje Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, has picked up select rights to Shudder’s, AMC Networks’ streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, One Cut Of The Dead, which will be released on June 2, 2020 on DVD and DVD/Blu-ray SteelBook.

Written and directed by Shin’ichirô Ueda (Special Actors), the horror/comedy stars Harumi Shuhama (Ichigo no uta), Takayuki Hamatsu (“Followers”), and Yuzuki Akiyama (“Kamen raidâ Jiô”). The film is based on the play, “Ghost in the Box!” written by Ryoichi Wada. Rlje Films will release One Cut Of The Dead on DVD for an Srp of $27.97 and on DVD/Blu-ray SteelBook for an Srp of $34.97.

The popular 2017 Japanese zombie comedy One Cut of the Dead/Kamera o Tomeru na! (Don’t Stop the Camera!), is set to get an English-language remake. For those of you not familiar with the film, here’s what it’s about:

A small low budget film crew is shooting a zombie horror flick in an abandoned water filtration plant, allegedly once used for human experiments by the Japanese military. Just as the director browbeats his actors and demands more special effects blood, a real zombie apocalypse erupts, much to his auteur delight. Packed with meta-movie references as mocking as they are loving, this relentless takedown of the Living Dead genre is a total blast.

“One Cut of the Dead,” a micro-budget horror film that last year defied the odds to become one of the biggest hits of the year in Japan, is headed for an English-language remake.

Patrick Cunningham, a Japan-based American producer whose credits include “Martha Marcy May Marlene” and “Starlet,” is behind the venture.

The original film, which depicts the zombie invasion of a low-budget movie shoot, had its debut at the Yubari festival in northern Japan in March of last year and played the following month at the Festival of Far East Film in Udine, Italy.

It received a nominal two-screen commercial release in Japan in June. But, buoyed by positive feedback, it scored more screens and played for several months. By the end of December, its cumulative gross had risen to $26.3 million – nearly 1,000 times its production budget of just $27,000.
