Six Months After the L.A. Wildfires, Here’s Who’s Still Picking Up the Pieces
Image
Like many Angelenos, Mark Duplass felt a desperate desire to help friends and neighbors displaced by January’s Los Angeles wildfires and sprang into action, distributing gift cards and fulfilling fire victims’ Amazon wish lists through his nonprofit, The Soul Points Fund.

Six months after the fires, the Morning Show star is surprised to find how much need remains in the city, even as news cameras have moved on and donations have waned.

“There are still so many people sleeping in tents on their burn sites or bopping around to hotels,” says Duplass, who co-founded The Soul Points Fund with his wife, actor/filmmaker Katie Aselton. “I thought at the six-month point we’d be much further along at helping people move into their permanent homes.”

Nonprofit organizations say they experienced a surge of generosity in the immediate aftermath of the wildfires that killed 30 people, displaced 150,000 and destroyed more than...

Neumann produced, with Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass, and Mel Eslyn exec producing for Duplass Brothers Productions. We were first to report on the project in April 2024.

Magic Hour (2025)
Magic Hour Review: Grief Bathed in Golden Dusk
Magic Hour (2025)
Magic Hour (2025) unfolds as an intimate drama laced with surreal undercurrents, a film that both whispers and shouts its truths. Conceived and helmed by Katie Aselton—with Mark Duplass as co‑writer—this is a work born of close collaboration, yet transmuted into something uncanny and untethered.

At its heart lies Erin and Charlie, a married pair who decamp to an isolated Joshua Tree retreat after an unspecified calamity. Their shared history flickers into view through archived home‑movie footage, all golden light and soft laughter. Then, barely twenty minutes in, the story fractures: Charlie’s presence shifts from flesh to apparition, an early twist that reorients our gaze. This choice, daring in its economy, forces us to question every look and gesture that follows.

The film moves within a single, desolate house—its walls an echo chamber for grief. Aselton’s direction is unflinching and tactile, her camera lingering...

Mark Duplass Shares ‘Criminally Low’ Salary He Made When ‘The League’ Began, Opens Up About Balancing Indie Projects and Big Budget Shows
Image
Mark Duplass’ main passion is creating independent television shows and films — but he understands that in order to do so, that means sometimes he has to take on a “money grab.”

After receiving the Impact Award at the Miami Film Festival on April 12, the actor and producer opened up about being hesitant to sign on to both “Good American Family” on Hulu and “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+.

“Why are we making a rip from the headline show, other than a money grab, honestly? Which I’m not above! I like a money grab. I need ways to fund all my independent productions, and that’s part of it, if I’m being honest,” he said of joining the series, which tells the story of Natalia Grace. Once he heard more about it and dove into becoming Michael Barnett, he was intrigued.

Before joining “The Morning Show” in 2019, he was also hesitant.

‘Magic Hour’ Review: Katie Aselton and Daveed Diggs Play Lovers Learning to Say Goodbye During Desert Getaway
Image
The circumstances of the long-distance relationship between Erin (Katie Aselton) and Charlie (Daveed Diggs) are a little atypical in “Magic Hour,” but director-star Aselton and co-writer Mark Duplass have long been able to cook up tantalizing, high-concept hooks for dramas about mental strain. It seems as if a weekend in Joshua Tree might offer a rare, in-person respite for the couple. But the rendezvous shows they couldn’t be further apart, setting up an even bigger drama at the heart of Aselton’s occasionally frustrating yet considerably daring drama.

Neither Erin or Charlie will mention exactly what’s driven a stake between them after Erin’s longtime friend (Brad Garrett) hands her the keys to his desert abode, and their vague use of “it” can irritate in the time it takes to get to the film’s big reveal. However, “it” certainly has to be big when the two would...

11 Best Shows Like ‘The Twilight Zone’ To Watch If You Love the Series
Image
When you purchase through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

The Twilight Zone is one of the most brilliant and trippy series ever made. Created by Rod Serling, the CBS series is a virtual and psychologically thrilling trip into the unknown. The Twilight Zone premiered over six decades ago, and it still holds up very well as far as the stories and the visual experience go. Maybe that’s why the Jordan Peele reboot failed: it couldn’t capture the same magic as the Serling series did. So, if you loved the trippy stories, inventive settings, and compelling characters in The Twilight Zone, here are some similar shows you should check out next.

‘Magic Hour’ Review: Katie Aselton Directs and Stars With Daveed Diggs in an Uneven Marriage Story
Image
Katie Aselton’s fourth film as director is begging for a spoiler. That would explain a lot but also give away too much. Luckily, the big reveal comes 20 minutes into this sensitively played yet too-obvious drama about a couple who go to the desert to regroup and look ahead to an altered future. Aselton plays Erin, whose mood at first veers with annoying abruptness between mournful and happy. Daveed Diggs is Charlie, full of smiling, even-tempered charm. If Charlie seems too good to be true, he is.

Aselton’s films include The Freebie (2010), arguably her best and a very different marriage story, and most recently Mack & Rita (2022) with Diane Keaton, a critical flop she didn’t write. She plays to her strengths and her indie roots in Magic Hour, directing herself and the other actors to natural, likable performances.

Erin’s mood swings become sympathetic when we learn why she is facing a crisis,...

‘Magic Hour’ Review: Katie Aselton & Daveed Diggs Fuel A Charming Duplass Production [SXSW]
Image
It’s evident, almost immediately, that a film called “Magic Hour” begins, and two people are introduced, Erin (Katie Aselton) and Charlie (Daveed Diggs), and they have a stable, cheerful relationship between them. Video captured at an amusement park perfectly puts their dynamic on display as they self-deprecatingly lollygag about the premises, and from this footage, the film shift to the desert, specifically Joshua Tree, where a lavish home owned by Erin’s friend (Brad Garrett) seems to be something of a getaway for the couple as they, as Garrett himself puts it, “work through all the crap.”

Indeed, there does exist something the two need to figure out, with Charlie’s upbeat demeanor clashing against Erin’s frequent slips into melancholy and an outburst emanating from Erin while the two are out hiking the desolate, beautiful landscape surrounding Garrett’s residence hints at some as-yet-unknown tragedy having occurred no long prior.

‘Magic Hour’ Review: Katie Aselton and Daveed Diggs Interrogate the Delusions That Keep Romance Alive
Image
Oh, to be a fly on the wall during the writing process that sparked Katie Aselton’s fourth directorial effort, “Magic Hour.” Written alongside her real-life husband (and fellow filmmaker) Mark Duplass, Aselton has made it clear in press materials that the film, about a loving if troubled married couple (played by Aselton and Daveed Diggs) isn’t explicitly about her actual marriage. But it’s also not not about her and Duplass’ long-running relationship. Still, once you see where Aselton and Duplass’ script takes their characters, the differentiation becomes easier to swallow, if not all the more intriguing.

No spoilers here, but suffice it to say, it’s thrilling to wonder at what point in their chatting Aselton and Duplass landed on the spine of the story, one that also serves as a very big twist and an ambitious swing. And, yes, this twist does come early in the film,...

Father Figures Cast & Character Guide
Image
The 2017 R-rated comedy movie Father Figures is a creative road movie that follows two adult brothers as they attempt to find their biological dad. After learning that their mother had lied to them their entire lives, Kyle and Peter are determined to figure out who their father is and set off across the country to find him. Along the way, they meet various men who could potentially be their father, and the brothers bond over their various adventures, creating a tale that is both funny and, at times, heartfelt.

Though the R-rated comedy received a lackluster response from critics and audiences and was not financially successful upon release, streaming audiences are now reassessing the movie and are realizing just how funny it actually is. Father Figures' quirky and underrated plot is supported by a cast of A-list stars that includes seasoned comedy veterans and expert dramatic actors.

Whatever Happened To The Cast Of The League?
Image
Created by Jeff & Jackie Schaffer, one of FX's most popular comedy series was "The League," which ran for seven seasons from 2009 to 2015. The raucous sitcom follows a group of friends in Chicago who run a highly competitive fantasy football league every year, creating their own challenges, rewards, and penalties. Along the way, the ensemble endures their own hilarious highs and lows involving romance and family life in between planning their fantasy teams. Throughout the show's run, the group is joined by several memorable guest stars and recurring characters, including the occasional real-life football player getting in on the fun.

Led by a solid ensemble cast of talented comedians, "The League" introduced beloved, crass characters framed against the backdrop of fantasy sports. Since the show's ending in 2015, many of the cast members have gone on to continue their film and television careers, while others haven't reached the same level of success.

Mark Duplass (‘The Morning Show’) on Chip’s ‘borderline pathological’ obsession with Alex and ‘self-sacrifice’ in Season 3 [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
While discussing Season 1 of “The Morning Show” with Gold Derby, Mark Duplass described his character, Charlie “Chip” Black, as a person who’s “struggling towards integrity.” After sexual misconduct allegations against co-anchor of the show’s titular daily morning news program Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) come to light, Chip, the executive producer of the program at that time, is forced to reckon with his own complicity in fostering a toxic culture at “Tms” by turning a blind eye to some of the illicit behavior that had been happening behind the scenes. When Season 3 opens, in 2022, a few years have passed since the events of Season 1, so how much progress does Duplass believe his character has made on his journey toward integrity?

“I think it hasn’t been a linear path. Most human beings don’t operate on a linear path, and it’s certainly that way for Chip. It’s more of a sine,...

The Duplass Family Isn’t Alarmist About a ‘Cratering’ Industry: Indies Have Always Been ‘You Must Destroy Yourself to Get There’
Image
The Duplasses are starting miniature with their first full-fledged family affair on all sides of the camera: the short film “Oh, Christmas Tree,” a bittersweet 10-minute ode to a father and daughter reliving their favorite holiday traditions.

It’s written by Mark Duplass, directed by his wife Katie Aselton (“Mack and Rita“), and stars their 16-year-old daughter Ora opposite her dad in roles that aren’t exactly autobiographical despite the onscreen, lived-in rapport. Here, the mother is dead, and the daughter, Claire, is now the one doing the parenting as her father grapples with mental health struggles. The short, currently seeking buyers out of Tribeca Festival, packs a lot into its brief running time, and for this trio, it also marks Ora’s entry into filmmaking as she readies to follow in her parents’ footsteps.

“Oh, Christmas Tree” is close to home in other ways: The Duplass family brain factory...

What The MCU Can Learn From Fox's X-Men TV Show With The Highest Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Fox's X-Men franchise set a high bar for Marvel with the top-rated X-Men '97 show on Rotten Tomatoes. Breaking genre norms with Deadpool and Logan brought success, a tactic the MCU should consider. Legion's unique character and storytelling triumphed, suggesting obscure characters can thrive in the MCU.

Fox's X-Men franchise has had many highs and lows, but its highest rated TV show on Rotten Tomatoes is something that the MCU could learn from. While X-Men '97, which is Marvel's first official X-Men release separate from Fox, has earned its place as the best-rated Marvel release (so far), it is not part of the MCU. This means the door is open for an McU-specific show to continue Marvel's streaming success and leave poorly-received shows like Secret Invasion in its wake. This is where Marvel could stand to learn a couple of things from Fox.

Pushing the boundaries of the superhero...

The League's Shivakamini Somakandarkram Explained
Image
The trophy in The League, the Shivakamini Somakandarkram, is named after the high school valedictorian and is a dumb inside joke that the group finds hilarious. Despite everyone now having affection for Shivakamini, the league members can't bring themselves to take her picture down from the trophy, exemplifying their immaturity. Shivakamini is shown as mature, self-possessed, and frustrated by the childish behavior of the league members, making her the most enjoyable character to play a game with.

As a fantasy football-centered TV show, the title of the trophy in The League, Shivakamini Somakandarkram, has an important meaning. The League follows a group of friends in Chicago who participate in a very serious fantasy football league every year. The lead-up to the draft, the season, the playoffs, the prize for the winner, and the punishment for the loser are all treated with the intensity and respect of a religious ceremony. The...

She Dies Tomorrow Ending Explained: Contagious Despair
Image
In an interview with Film Comment in 2020, actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz said that she used her ample salary from making the remake of "Pet Sematary" to make her feature directorial debut "She Dies Tomorrow," a dark fable about the nature of despair. "She Dies Tomorrow" was one of the unlucky 2020 features whose potential success was hindered by Covid-19-related theater closures, resulting in a combined box office take of less than $400,000 from a release on only 24 screens.

Not that a film like "She Dies Tomorrow" was a threat to, say, a Marvel film. Seimetz constructed an assertively sad meditation full of weeping, doubt, death, and fear. It imagines a world where depression is contagious and how humans' natural propensity toward utter emotional emptiness ultimately informs and colors every aspect of our lives.

The premise seems simple: Kate Lyn Sheil plays a woman named Amy who has just purchased a...

“Old Dads” (2023) Movie on Netflix. Review: If you consider yourselves a little out of time, this film will amuse you
Image
Old Dads is a 2023 American comedy film directed by Bill Burr and starring Burr, Bobby Cannavale, and Bokeem Woodbine. The film follows the story of three best friends who become fathers later in life and find themselves struggling to adapt to a changing world.

They are friends, they have a company in common, they are older and, in addition, all three are “mature” parents facing a new world of millennials and new customs.

If you’re in your forties and think this world has changed too much already, this movie will tickle your fancy.

This from a 40-year-old who thinks this world is too soft.

Review of “Old Dads”

A comedy, definitely, for 40-somethings. A comedy about time passing and how mores have changed and how those of us who were raised on Clint Eastwood movies see this modern world as too soft for our tastes.

A film written, directed and played by Bill Burr,...

Old Dads Review
Image
Plot: Three best friends become fathers later in life and find themselves battling preschool principals, millennial CEOs and anything created after 1987.

Review: If you are a fan of Bill Burr’s stand-up comedy, you likely know what you are in for with Old Dads. Burr’s directorial debut is an amalgam of his observations and rants from his twenty-plus years as a comedian told through the fictional story of a trio of fifty-year-olds dealing with generational change. On the heels of a year that has seen semi-autobiographical films starring comedians like Burt Kreischer and Sebastian Maniscalco and the series Bupkis with Pete Davidson, Old Dads is a fictional story that relies heavily on Burr’s sense of humor. But, instead of capitalizing on Burr’s red-hot temper as a source of constant comedy, Old Dads is a relatively traditional movie that tries to tell several different kinds of stories without...

Old Dads – Review
Image
It looks like another stand-up comic has decided to expand on his stage persona and make the jump to a feature film. Of course, that’s nothing new as comedians have been doing this since the first filmed pratfall or wise-crack. Things are a bit more welcoming now as the onslaught of streaming services have put out a big “welcome mat” to the jokesters, raking in lots of new subscribers with taped comedy concerts, usually running about an hour or so, perfect for those needing a quick fix of laughter. It has worked for Kevin Hart and Amy Schumer, and Jo Koy’s autobiographical Easter Sunday certainly found an audience at the multiplex. Will the same happen to this touring comic who pushes against the current culture? Well, it’s going straight to streaming, which might be the perfect home for a trio of Old Dads.

The de facto leader...

‘Old Dads’ Review: Bill Burr & Friends Scream, Yell And Curse Through A Way-Over-The-Top Netflix Comedy
Image
Three fiftysomething jerks extend their adolescence way, way beyond the breaking point in Old Dads, a boorish and obnoxiously vulgar comedy that, since it can’t claim any other great distinction, might well have been expressly written to break the all-time record for use of the f-word in the major studio movie. Even Lenny Bruce might be twitching in his grave over this one.

All the same, director/co-writer Bill Burr has more often than not had his finger on the pulse of the populace, so this slap-dash-feeling Netflix offering likely will prove a solid audience-pleaser.

There certainly have been plenty of comedies featuring guys who put off behaving like adults for as long as they can; perhaps The Odd Couple still stands as the quintessential example of this subgenre whose roots go pretty deep. In this case, the three buds behave as if they should be enrolled, not in grade school,...
