The 10 Most Disturbing Movies That Are Actually Great
Image
What makes a movie hard to watch? A mixture of unpleasant imagery and taboo storytelling? No matter the answer, the fact that a movie is disturbing or difficult to endure doesn’t mean it isn’t without its qualities. Some of the most disturbing movies of all time are great works of art from auteur visionaries.

I hope you’ve got a strong stomach, because these are the 10 most disturbing movies that are hard to watch, but are actually great.

1. Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975) Directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini

Described by some as “irredeemably depraved,” Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom is the last film directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, released three weeks after his tragic murder. Set in the World War II era, the film follows four libertines who kidnap eighteen teenagers and subject them to four months of unimaginable torture. It’s not a fun time at the movies,...

Troian Bellisario's New Police Drama Is Sitting High On Prime Video's Top Charts
Image
Troian Bellisario has made her mark in a number of projects across several genres. Her TV career before "On Call" includes notable guest turns in shows like "NCIS" and "Suits," as well as the title she's best known for: Freeform's teen drama series "Pretty Little Liars," where she starred as central character Spencer Hasting throughout the show's duration -- and eventually also got to portray the villainous Alex Drake, Spencer's twin sister.

Meanwhile, Bellisario's movie résumé ranges from artsy drama and comedy to science fiction and outright horror. In 2015, she notably starred in the remake of Pascal Laugier's "Martyrs" (2008), one of the best (and most gruesome scary) horror movies ever filmed. While the U.S. version didn't quite reach the blood-spattered heights of the French original, Bellisario's own visibility has only continued to increase since that film ... and with her newest success story on Amazon Prime Video, her...

Kevin Bacon's Favorite Horror Movies Are Perfect To Binge Watch This Halloween
Image
Spoopy Season is upon us, dear readers, and any cineaste worth their weight in bone matter is likely scouring the world's many streaming services looking for the best fright flicks available. Most casual horror fans may be content to idly re-watch well-trodden classics like "Halloween," while more enterprising gorehounds will be studiously studying the carefully curated films on Shudder. The jaded, more experienced fright fans, however, will require stronger coffee to get their fear fix, and those brave souls may dive face-first into the overstuffed trough of Night Flight or Eternal Family, looking for oddities that the average soul cannot stand. Are you going to watch a gentle film like "Hocus Pocus" this October, or are you the type to try out "Bloody Muscle Bodybuilder in Hell?"

We can say for sure that actor Kevin Bacon, a great actor with impeccable taste, is an aficionado of the genre and likes...

The Two Underrated Movies That Left Horror Auteur Mike Flanagan Terrified
Image
Mike Flanagan knows how to get under our skin. The horror auteur gravitates toward themes that deal with generational trauma and cyclical grief, entwined with supernatural manifestations of such visceral emotions. His Netflix horror hits offer a variety of scares: series like "Midnight Mass" mix religion-tinted bouts of vampirism with acute human loss, while his rendition of "The Fall of the House of Usher" maps the disintegration of a generational legacy marked with greed, betrayal, and pain. Apart from helming effective horror films like "Hush" and "Oculus," Flanagan has also adapted seminal literary works, including Stephen King's "Doctor Sleep" and "Gerald's Game," which the director has invested with inimitable depth.

As someone so well-versed with the inner machinations of the genre, is Flanagan easily spooked? Maybe not anymore, but horror movies "scared [him] too much" as a child, until he came to appreciate the terrifying ability of the written word...

Ucr Creative Juices: Xavier Dolan Moving Out of Retirement with new Horror Genre Film
Image
Someone is emerging from early (filmmaker) retirement, and we might have Cannes topper Thierry Frémaux to thank for it. After a cool volunteer job as the head of the Un Certain Regard jury this summer, Xavier Dolan‘s creative spark was reignited. He has dusted off a project he wrote before the pandemic and is now putting the finishing touches on what will be his ninth feature film—a venture into the horror genre. It’s worth noting that Dolan had a small role in Pascal Laugier’s gore-filled Martyrs before debuting as a director with I Killed My Mother in 2009. This new energy also came ab out from a trio of projects that Dolan has climbed on as an actor.…...

Five Transgressive Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
While there’s plenty to be said and appreciated about cozy, comforting horror that offers catharsis, the genre’s ultimate aim is to terrify, shock, and even repulse. Of course, there is no shortage of ways that filmmakers accomplish this, frequently through gore, violence, and potent scare tactics, but transgressive horror is in a league of its own.

More than just gore, transgressive horror films revel in the taboo. Transgressive horror shatters cultural norms and seeks to explore beyond the boundaries of taste and social sensibilities, challenging viewers with shocking and sacrilegious imagery and themes. And yet, it’s not solely for shock value; transgressive horror has more on its mind than simply gore and depictions of depravity. There’s a purpose behind the pain. This week’s streaming picks are for the seekers of extreme cinema, unafraid to test their limits.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

10 Horror Movies That Got Better After Dropping Their Original Premise
Image
Horror movies typically rely on their premise alone, but some great films have successfully abandoned their original premises to subvert audience expectations. Movies like "Audition," "The Tall Man," and "Hereditary" take unexpected turns midway through the story, delivering unforgettable and genre-defying twists. "Psycho" and "Malignant" are prime examples of films that dismiss their initial plotlines to reveal more shocking and horrifying narratives, ultimately enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Some horror movies take a wild left turn at the midpoint, suddenly becoming scarier, funnier, and sometimes more original. Traditionally, horror movies live or die based on their premise alone. Wes Craven’s A Nightmare On Elm Street, for instance, may have benefited from superb performances from Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, and a young Johnny Depp, but the idea of a serial killer who can attack his victims in their dreams was the movie’s real selling point. Before viewers got to...

Every Time We Got the ‘Scariest Movie Ever’ (By Year)
Image
We are only a matter of weeks into 2023, but a strong contender for the title of “scariest movie” in some folks’ minds has already emerged in Skinamarink. The idea of the “scariest movie ever,” i.e. a horror film that generates word-of-mouth buzz, might seem like a modern concept but it actually goes back nearly a century. One of the first examples can be traced back to 1932 and the tastefully titled Freaks, a movie centered around a beautiful trapeze artist who schemes to steal a side-show performer’s inheritance only to be thwarted by his deformed cohorts.

Featuring real life circus performers, the movie was drastically recut by MGM after test screenings in which several terrified audience members “got up and ran out.” Today, those kinds of reports would be worth their weight in gold, but back then they led to the 90-minute running time being slashed to just 64, with...

Sam’s Pre-Halloween Horrorthon Week 1
Image
I own a frankly absurd amount of movies (roughly 5000), and I’m subscribed to several streaming services. In short, I have a lot of films that I haven’t got around to watching immediately to hand. For the past decade plus I’ve been too busy in October to indulge in the Shocktober horror marathons that a lot of my friends do, but as I’m not doing the London Film Festival as press this year, I thought I’d take the opportunity to delve into the back catalogue of horror I’ve had waiting to be watched.

From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.

I hope you’ll...

The Cannes Film Festival has unveiled the jury for the competition, which will be powered by a majority of women, including American actor-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal, French actor-helmer Mélanie Laurent, French-Senegalese actor-director Mati Diop, Austrian director Jessica Hausner and cult French singer Mylene Farmer.

Cole Vigue
Open 24 Hours Review
Cole Vigue
Having just left prison for setting her ex-boyfriend, serial killer James (Cole Vigue), on fire Mary (Vanessa Grasse) gets a job in an all night gas station. Still haunted by hallucinations, on her first night she begins seeing James around many corners, but there are more dangers in Mary’s first shift than her imagination.

The concept of Padraig Reynolds’ screenplay suggests something more morally complex than your standard issue slasher. He sets up a final girl who isn’t as easy to root for as the genre’s usual heroine, not only did she set someone on fire, but we discover that she has been shunned by the community for simply standing by and watching while her ex murdered several women. This could throw open a lot of ideas; allowing the film to engage with coercive and abusive relationships and the trauma that results from them, the immense pressure...

French TV Series to Watch at Mipcom
Streaming services are boosting French TV production. Pascal Breton, whose Paris-based company Federation Entertainment co-produced “Marseille” and most recently “Marianne,” said the biggest benefit of streaming services, and Netflix in particular, is the way in which it has created a world audience for French shows. “Netflix amplifies the appeal of French shows abroad, and we expect that ‘Marianne’ will get a bigger audience outside of France than locally,” says Breton.

“That’s the model of Netflix — they’re counting as much on the Spanish, French and British series than on the American and Korean series to attract and retain subscribers,” adds Breton, whose company now has several projects in the pipeline with streaming services.

At Mipcom, the international biz will get a look at these buzzy French TV titles:

“They Were Ten”

Director: Pascal Laugier

Six-part psychological thriller adapted from the Agatha Christie novel involves 10 people at a luxury hotel...

Competition: Win horror ‘Incident in a Ghostland’ on Blu-ray
To celebrate the release of Incident in a Ghostland – out on Blu-ray & DVD 3rd September from Arrow Video – we are giving away a copy on Blu-ray!

From the director of 2008’s horror ordeal, Martyrs, Incident in a Ghostland is a terrifying thrill ride that’s as intense as it is disturbing. Having screened at 2018’s Arrow Video FrightFest to positive reviews ahead of its UK Blu-ray & DVD debut, Pascal Laugier’s latest will have you hiding behind your hands and squirming in your seat.

It would spoil things to give too much away about the plot as it’s a film best watched when you’re unprepared for it but the lead cast give powerhouse performances, really selling the characters. Combine this with Laugier’s unique, visceral visual style and you genuinely believe these characters are trapped in an inescapable nightmare.

Incident In A Ghostland Review – FrightFest 2018
Pascal Laugier is well-known in horror circles as pretty much the godfather of 21st-century extremism. Over 10 years on, his heady French thriller Martyrs still stands as something of a measure for just how twisted an under-the-radar genre movie can be. His latest, a second English-language offering (following 2012’s so-so The Tall Man), hits some of the same troubling depths as his most-talked-about work, but with a more high-octane edge, ditching the slow build for a one-two-three reveal that just about knocks the wind out of you.

Incident In A Ghostland begins as a bare-bones home-invasion thriller – two teenage girls and their mother are victim to a horrific (and we mean horrific) attack – but what builds out from there defies both expectation and convention at nearly every single turn. It’s nothing short of an assault on the audience; an emotionally, psychologically and philosophically charged no-holds-barred horror that burrows deep down...

10 Best Horror Movies of 2018 You've Already Missed
Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
We're barely past the midpoint and it's already been a great year for horror movies. A Quiet Place pleased critics and genre aficionados in droves, Hereditary left audiences shocked and gasping, Upgrade delivered unprecedented ultraviolence, and Annihilation found an unlikely yet enthralling intersect between fantasy and body horror. We've also seen solid sequels in Insidious: The Last Key, The First Purge, and Hellraiser: Judgment. And the best may be yet to come, with The Nun, The Predator, and Halloween all coming down the pike when it comes to 2018 horror Movies.

Sure, there have been some disappointments as well but there've also been some incredible genre offerings that have fallen through the cracks. If you're one of those cinephiles who complains there's nothing new or original horror movies being produced these days, you simply aren't looking hard enough.

But hey, that's what I'm here for: To separate the wheat from the...

Film Review: ‘Incident in a Ghostland’
Pascal Laugier in Martyrs (2008)
French director Pascal Laugier’s first English-language feature, “The Tall Man,” wasn’t seen by many, perhaps because that convoluted mystery-thriller with Jessica Biel wasn’t really the straight horror film it appeared to be. Maybe that explains why Laugier’s first film in six years returns to the terrain of his more successful 2008 breakout, “Martyrs.” While not as graphically icky as that film, his new “Incident in a Ghostland” adds up to much the same thing: It’s thoughtfully, even elegantly crafted, light on plot, character development, and explication, but very heavy on the torture inflicted on terrified young women. For some horror fans, such “extreme” content in a relatively upscale package made “Martyrs” special, and they may enjoy a similar frisson here. The rest of us will again feel a tad queasy about the way Laugnier meticulously showcases sadism while seeming comparatively indifferent to matters of basic storytelling logic and suspense.

Official Us Trailer for Pascal Laugier's Horror 'Incident in a Ghostland'
"I never should've stayed in that house." Vertical Entertainment has debuted a new official Us trailer for the supernatural horror thriller Incident in a Ghostland, the latest from French director Pascal Laugier. We posted an international trailer for this earlier in the year. The story is about a house where a woman had to fend off intruders to save her daughters. Years later, the two of them grow up with completely different personalities, still traumatized by the events. When they all reunite at the house once again, strange events began to occur. The horror film stars Crystal Reed, Taylor Hickson, Rob Archer, Emilia Jones, Adam Hurtig, Anastasia Phillips, Mylène Farmer, and Alicia Johnston. Unfortunately this still looks as mediocre as it did in the first trailer, only for the most diehard horror fans. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Pascal Laugier's Incident in a Ghostland, from YouTube: You...

'Ghostland': Film Review
Pascal Laugier in Martyrs (2008)
Just when you thought it was safe to move to an isolated country house filled with creepy antique dolls, dead bugs and way too much floral wallpaper, in comes Ghostland, a violently twisted take on the home invasion tale from French horror junkie Pascal Laugier.

Like the director’s gory debut, Martyrs, which took the torture porn genre to untold levels of unpleasantness, this taut — if somewhat corny — slasher flick once again features two young women subjected to all kinds of abuse both real and imaginary (though mostly the former) as they’re locked inside by a pair of first-rate psychopaths. Why...

Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool (2016)
Deadpool actress Taylor Hickson is suing her latest film’s production company after allegedly suffering a gruesome on set injury that she says is debilitating to her career.

The actress was filming “an emotionally charged scene” for her upcoming movie Ghostland during which her director Pascal Laugier, who is not a defendant in the suit, allegedly encouraged her to pound on a glass pane, according to a lawsuit obtained by Deadline.

Despite allegedly being assured by Laugier and a producer that it was safe to pound on the glass, “the glass shattered, causing [her] head and upper body to fall through...

‘Deadpool’ Actress Sues Over ‘Permanent Scarring’ to Face After Shattered-Glass Accident on Horror Film Set
Taylor Hickson
Taylor Hickson says she was 19 years old, working on an indie horror film called “Ghostland,” when her director ordered her to keep pounding on a glass door. She asked, according to a lawsuit filed this week, if it was safe. The director, Pascal Laugier, insisted that it was, and so did a producer, the lawsuit said. But the glass shattered, “causing head and upper body to fall through the door and shards of glass,” according to the suit. The left side of Hickson’s jaw was slashed by the broken glass, leaving “permanent scarring” that took “approximately 70 stitches” to close,...

Hellraiser: Judgment Director Reveals Alternate Story Pitch
Hellraiser: Judgment director Gary J. Tunnicliffe has revealed his alternate story pitch for the movie. The Hellraiser franchise has – no pun intended – been trapped in development hell for awhile now. Dimension has been trying to put together a remake of the original for at least a decade, with directors such as Patrick Lussier and Pascal Laugier being attached to the project at different stages; even series creator Clive Barker wrote a potential reboot script. Developing the remake has proved difficult, however, since the key themes of the series include sadomasochism, damnation and explicit gore, making it hard to market to a mainstream audience.

Trailer & Poster for Pascal Laugier’s ‘Ghostland’
Pascal Laugier is a director with a reputation… After all, when you make a film like Martyrs, you’re bound to get pigeon-holed into the “extreme cinema” category. However Laugier’s first film post-Martyrs, The Tall Man, wasn’t met with as much… praise… Which is probably why the French director has taken 6 years to follow that film up with another spooky tale: Ghostland (aka Incident in a Ghostland), which stars Crystal Reed, Anastasia Phillips, Mylene Farmer, Emilia Jones, and Taylor Hickson.

Following the death of her aunt, Pauline and her two daughters inherit a house. But the first night, murderers enter the house and Pauline must fight to save her daughters. A drama that will traumatize the whole family but especially affect differently each of the girls whose personalities will diverge further after this nightmarish night. While Beth becomes a renowned author specializing in horror literature, Vera gets bogged down in destructive paranoia.

Nightmarishly Insane Trailer For the Horror Film Ghostland
The first trailer has been released for a crazy looking horror film called Ghostland and what I'm seeing is some high-energy nightmarish stuff. As you'll see, this story is going to be filled with some sinister content. I like what I'm seeing in this trailer and it looks like a film that I'll enjoy watching because I'm a horror movie freak.

The story begins in a house where a mother is forced to fight off intruders to save her two daughters. Still traumatized by the events that took place in the house, the girls grow up to have completely different personalities. When they reunite at the house once again, terrifying things start to happen. Here's the synopsis:

Following the death of her aunt, Pauline and her two daughters inherit a house. But the first night, murderers enter the house and Pauline must fight to save her daughters. A drama that...
