He grew up in Isernhagen near Hanover.

His parents are Jehova's Witnesses, he was raised in the faith, was a member of that community of faith until he was 18, did door-to-door missionary work and was never excommunicated. While being critical of the community nowadays, he does not view all of their approaches in a negative light.
