One year later, remembering Star Trek: Discovery actor Kenneth Mitchell
Image
February 24 marked the first anniversary of Star Trek: Discovery actor Kenneth Mitchell’s death following five years of living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Mitchell, post-diagnosis, made the most of every moment as a husband, father, friend, and actor, and it’s well worth taking a look back at what he accomplished during his 49 years on Earth.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Mitchell initially gained traction as a model before shifting to acting. He amassed nearly 50 film and television credits before his death. Among those credits were the movies Miracle and Captain Marvel, recurring or series regular roles on Odyssey 5, Jericho, Ghost Whisperer, Switched at Birth, The Astronaut Wives Club, Frequency, Nancy Drew, and The Old Man, as well as numerous guest shots. He was, of course, best known for portraying the Klingon characters Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio,...

FX Reveals the Fate of Jeff Bridges' The Old Man
Image
Two months after the Season 2 finale, the future of The Old Man on FX has been revealed. Unfortunately, it's not good news for fans of the series.

Per Deadline, FX has officially canceled The Old Man after two seasons, so there will not be a third season of the Jeff Bridges-led series. The show meeting its fate comes after wading through some troubled waters with its production for its two seasons. Season 1 began development in 2019 and was forced to shut down with just three episodes left to film because of the pandemic in 2020. Filming was further postponed as Bridges underwent cancer treatment; he announced in 2021 that his cancer was in remission, and production on The Old Man resumed in 2022.

Kenneth Mitchell, Actor In Star Trek Shows And Captain Marvel, Has Died At 49
Image
We're sad to report the passing of Canadian actor Kenneth Mitchell at the too-young age of 49. His death was confirmed in an X/Twitter post (made via the account previously belonging to Mitchell himself) which eulogized him. Mitchell is survived by his family, including his parents, his siblings, and his wife, fellow actor Susan Pratt, and their children Lilah and Kallum (a GoFundMe has been set up for Mitchell's family by friends).

Mitchell built up a wide TV resume during the 2000s and 2010s. He didn't have many starring roles, granted, but he was in the main cast of the cult classic post-apocalyptic series "Jericho." Mitchell kept racking up guest roles on every major procedural series under the sun: "NCIS," "Grey's Anatomy," "Criminal Minds," "Castle" -- the list goes on.

In recent years, Mitchell became a name that science-fiction fans will recognize. He had a small role in "Captain Marvel,...

All The Good Things Discovery Gave Star Trek
Image
Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will be the show's last, and it will bow out in 2024 having contributed so many good things to the Star Trek franchise. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 promises to launch Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery on a quest to find "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy." Discovery's climactic voyages are bound to continue to positively add to Star Trek's canon.

Discovery is the only Star Trek series to completely shift its setting in the Prime timeline. Originally a prequel set in the 23rd century, Discovery reset itself 930 years in the future in season 3. Discovery is also the first serialized Star Trek series made in the streaming era of prestige television. Controversial since its inception, Discovery nonetheless re-ignited the dormant Star Trek franchise, launching an entire universe of new series on Paramount+. When Discovery ultimately warps into the final frontier,...

Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Documentary Sequel Commissioned at Discovery+ U.K. – Global Bulletin

Warner Bros. Discovery U.K. is re-teaming with Optomen TV to produce a follow-up to “Johnny vs Amber,” a two-part documentary which explored Johnny Depp’s defamation trial in the U.K. High Court with explosive evidence, intimate personal archive and in-depth interviews from both legal teams. Following the success of that documentary, the follow up will be focused on the recent and very high-profile legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, this time in the U.S. The two-part Discovery+ documentary will again look at the extensive evidence and testimony of both Depp and Heard. Each episode will present one side of the argument through legal teams, friends, family and key witnesses.

In addition, Discovery+ has also greenlit two further ‘vs’ series: “Coleen vs Rebekah,” will examine the recent U.K. court battle between high profile footballers’ wives Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy; and “Britney vs Jamie,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Trailer Doubles Down on Discovery Twist
Rebecca Romijn, Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia, and Jess Bush in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
In every meaningful way, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds looks to be a back-to-basics Trek TV series. We’ve already been told the series will be more episodic, moving away from the contemporary prestige TV model of serialization and swinging back toward the kind of standalone sci-fi adventures that made The Original Series and The Next Generation so beloved to begin with. And while Picard Season 2 is certainly off to a fan-servicey start, the promise of Strange New Worlds is that it could, in theory, cast a much wider net. All you need to know is that this is the Enterprise and they’re boldly going, right?

Well, not exactly. While the inspiring and upbeat new teaser trailer for Strange New Worlds certainly feels accessible and back-to-basics, it’s still essentially framed in a relatively recent canon twist that happened in Star Trek: Discovery Season 2.

In other words, if you’re wondering why,...

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 5 Easter Eggs & References

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 5.

Following in the footsteps of Season 3, the first batch of episodes in Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 do two things: The overall story of the season-long arc is explored, but, the episode itself presents a standalone story in the classic Star Trek tradition. Last week, Tilly got her “Galileo Seven” moment, but this week, in “The Examples,” Disco tackles a classic Trek ethical dilemma.

As Burnham and Book navigate the morality of saving prisoners on a doomed colony, “The Examples” front-loads the episode with a ton of callbacks and Easter eggs to the rest of the franchise. Here’s every Easter egg and big reference we spotted in Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 5…

Star Trek: Voyager Documentary Sneak Peek Looks Back at the Epic Legacy of a TV Classic
Image
The makers of To The Journey: Looking Back on Star Trek: Voyager just shared their clip showing several Star Trek alumni, including George Takei, Mary Chieffo, Armin Shimmerman, Jeffrey Combs, Andrew Robinson, and Voyager stars Robert Beltran and Tim Russ as well, sitting in a decidedly space-agey chair for interviews. The reunion, as you can see, is a joyous one, as the interviewees clap along with the crew as they reunite to discuss the legacy of Star Trek.

The crowdfunded documentary from the makers of What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine launched on Indiegogo earlier this year becoming the most successful crowdfunded documentary film ever. The record-setting sum and the campaign will allow the filmmakers to remaster Star Trek: Voyager footage in high definition and include "an exclusive, never-before-seen Voyager surprise."

"It's been over 25 years since Voyager first got lost in the Delta Quadrant...

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 12 Easter Eggs & References
Wilson Cruz, Robinne Fanfair, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Blu del Barrio, Sonequa Martin-Green, David Ajala, and Mary Wiseman in Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.

After giving us the Guardian of Forever in episode 10, it was going to be hard for Star Trek: Discovery to try and top old-school Trekkie nostalgia. Luckily, the final few episodes of Discovery Season 3 aren’t really trying for over-the-top callbacks. Like the episode “Su’Kal,” episode 12 of Season 3 — “There Is a Tide..” — is fairly light on obvious Easter eggs and shout-outs. That said, some of the more subtle Easter eggs connect to much bigger aspects of canon. And, from a certain point of view, aspects of “There Is a Tide…” scan like a Disco remake of a very fun Tng episode!

Baryonic residue

As the Discovery jumps in near Federation HQ, Commander Willa (Vanessa Jackson) tells Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) that the “baryonic residue” of both Disco and Osyraa’s ship match that of the Verubin Nebula. “Baryonic residue” refers to “the...

Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 12 Review: There is a Tide...
Harrison Ford, Anthony Daniels, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, David Prowse, Kenny Baker, and Peter Mayhew in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
As someone who really dislikes cliffhangers, Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 12 kind of burns my butt as it's really The Empire Strikes Back-esque second act to a Three-part finale.

It's well-written, well-paced, and even manages to pull a few surprises out of the proverbial hat, or -- more accurately, in this case -- the Dot-23 repair drones.

But it comes in hot in the immediate aftermath of Osyraa's pirate takeover of Discovery and leaves us with Osyraa still in command; Saru, Culber, and Adira still in the nebula with Su'Kal; and Discovery without its navigator, thus unable to jump back for a rescue.

Understandably, serialized programming can't just drop a three-hour finale into the mix but, in the name of all that strange and new, dangling real resolution for three weeks is cruel.

But, despite my grousing, I have to admit that, like Empire, it's a rollicking good piece of work.

If anyone was on the fence as to whether or not the Lower Deckers in Star Trek: Lower Decks were also giant in-universe Star Trek fans, the latest episode, “Veritas,” will reveal the truth. Mariner, Rutherford, Tendi and Boimler know their Trek history better than most real life Trekkies. And to prove it, this episode has more Easter eggs and deep-cuts than (mabye) all the other episodes combined. From discussions about the hair styles of obsecure Tng characters, to some very big homages to a big seen in Star Trek VI, this episode packed in the references, and then decided to throw in a Gorn wedding.

Here are all of the Easter eggs and references we caught in Star Trek: Lower Decks, Episode 8, “Veritas.”
