2024 hasn’t been that great of a year for Prime Video, as the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power failed to make up for its abysmal first season and continued its streak of huge disappointment. That doesn’t mean there were no great shows on Prime Video this year. So, we compiled a list comprising the 10 best original prime video shows of 2024.

The first season of A24 and Prime Video's smash-hit animated series "Hazbin Hotel" ended on February 2, 2024, and while the creative team is hard at work on season 2, the show's popularity hasn't decreased. "Hazbin Hotel" earned the largest global debut viewership for a new animated title on Prime Video, surpassing other hot commodities like "Invincible" and "The Boys Presents: Diabolical." The series doesn't boast the same recognizable IP as its contemporaries, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a phenomenon. In the months since the season's end, convention circuits have shown that "Hazbin Hotel" has become one of the most popular shows for cosplayers to emulate, fanart floods social media feeds on the daily, but thanks to the death of the monoculture, the popularity often feels like it exists in a vacuum.

I've previously described "Hazbin Hotel" as adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons.

After the success of the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel in 2019, Vivienne Medrano showed the potential that an adult animated musical series could offer. A potential that saw A24 joining into the animation space, with Fox’s Bento Box Entertainment as producer, leading to an eight episode season on Prime Video and a renewal for season 2. Joining Medrano on the project are songwriters Sam Haft and Andrew Underberg, who used multiple styles of music to give the series a more musical feeling than the pilot episode.

“On paper, there’s a lot of people that might say no to something like this — a very raunchy animated musical comedy world written by a young woman,” Hazbin Hotel star Stephanie Beatriz tells The Hollywood Reporter. But for the Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Encanto actress, showrunner Vivienne Medrano’s “weird, cool, fantastical imagination” has produced a series that is not only “delightfully horny, unhinged and ridiculous,” but uniquely special beyond its “small minutiae of cock jokes.

“It somehow manages to have this throughline of true gay love and this very big idea about whether it’s possible to redeem a soul, to change after being damned for all time,” she says of A24’s first foray into animation and Prime Video’s latest push into the medium’s R-rated adult space. “I just love Vivienne’s world-building.”

Hazbin Hotel, the first foray into animation for award-winning studio A24, is actually not new, despite having debuted on Prime Video just last Friday.

The R-rated musical comedy originated online as a 30-minute pilot in 2019 and quickly won over a fanbase that has largely stuck by it since its self-funded days. Harmony, the Barry Manilow/Bruce Sussman musical that opened in November to good reviews that never translated to big audiences, will play its final performance at the Barrymore Theatre on Sunday, February 4.

Producers Ken Davenport, Sandi Moran and Garry Kief made the announcement this evening. At the time of its closing, Harmony will have played 24 previews and 96 regular performances. The musical began previews October 18 and opened November 13.

Sierra Boggess will reprise her role as ‘Mary’ in the Broadway production of Harmony, the new musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman that premiered Off Broadway last spring.

The Broadway staging is set to begin previews Wednesday, October 18, at the Barrymore Theatre ahead of an official opening night on Monday, November 13.

Producers Ken Davenport, Sandi Moran and Garry Kief made the casting announcement today.

Boggess is best-known for originating the role of ‘Ariel’ in The Little Mermaid on Broadway in 2007 and her multiple appearances as ‘Christine Daaé’ in The Phantom of the Opera.

Julie Benko, who has built a devoted following as the Funny Girl understudy and alternate Fanny Brice, will originate her first Broadway role this fall in the new musical Harmony by by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman.

Benko will play the role of Ruth, producers Ken Davenport, Sandi Moran and Garry Kief announced today. The production will begin previews at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre on Wednesday, October 18, ahead of an official opening night on Monday, November 13.

“It is rare to be offered the chance to be part of a Broadway show that resonates so deeply on both personal and political levels,” Benko said in a statement. “I’m so proud to be a part of Harmony and tremendously grateful to Barry, Bruce, Warren, Ken, and the entire team for entrusting me with Ruth’s story. I can’t wait to get into the rehearsal room with the brilliant company this Fall.

Chip Zien will reprise his Off Broadway performance in the Barry Manilow-Bruce Sussman musical Harmony when the production moves to Broadway this fall.

Zien will star as “Rabbi,” a role he originated last year in the Off Broadway production at National Yiddish Theatre/Folksbiene. He joins the previously announced Broadway cast members Sean Bell, Danny Kornfeld, Zal Owen, Eric Peters, Blake Roman and Steven Telsey, who will be playing the six real-life Comedian Harmonists at the center of the musical.
