With his 2009 musical romance Once, writer-director John Carney laid the groundwork for all of his subsequent films. He has, ever since, been telling stories about adrift musical folk eventually brought together by the intimacy of collaboration. His latest, Flora and Son, essentially doubles down on that commitment by focusing on two relationships built around music, but right away the film feels spread thin as a result.
The film’s central figure is Flora (Eve Hewson), a young single mother in Dublin who’s often out partying rather than caring for Max (Orén Kinlan), the now-teenage son she had before she turned 18. Their relationship is volatile, and their mutual disdain could hardly be more apparent. Flora makes no secret of the relief she feels when she can dump Max on the doorstep of her neck-tattooed ex-husband, Ian (Jack Reynor). Max, in turn, has taken to acting out, and he’s on...

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch Flora and Son – the latest music-themed film from director John Carney – at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and the result was a 9/10 review you can read at This Link. A wider audience will get their chance to see Flora and Son when it reaches Apple TV+ on September 29th, and with that date just a month away a trailer for the film has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt (The Dark Knight Rises) and Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters), who happens to be the daughter of Bono from U2, Flora and Son was also scripted by Carney and centers on single mom Flora (Hewson), who is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max. One of the first things you’ll learn if you watch or read science fiction is that meteor showers are bad for your health. Especially if they’re unexpected. Especially if you can actually see the meteors hitting the ground, and all the more so if one lands in your pool.
Dierdre (Lucy Marton), Heather (Sophie Vavasseur) and Charlotte (Chelsea Edge) are in one of the safer places to be in the event of an alien invasion: out in the desert, in the middle of nowhere. They do not, however, really have the skills for handling this kind of thing. Social media influencer Dierdre is distraught because she can’t stream what she’s seeing (never mind the fact that people can probably see it for themselves across hundreds or even thousands of miles). She and Heather are utterly disgusted by the slim-looking egg thing in the pool, and all the more so when it.

As The Seed opens Heather, Diedre and Charlotte arrive at an opulent vacation home in the middle of what is supposed to be the Mojave Desert, (the film was shot in Malta).
There’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime meteor shower, (where have we heard that before?), and social media personalities Heather and Dierdre think this will be the perfect location for a photoshoot incorporating it. Charlotte who has no social media presence at all just wants to hang out and party with her friends from school. Things become complicated when something falls from the sky and lands in their pool. Not a meteorite, but something alive.
Saying the leads are unlikable would be an understatement. Heather is the kind of famous for being born rich celebrity that makes it...

If you’re looking for a family-friendly alien invasion movie like E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, you will not find it here. The new out of this world horror comedy, The Seed, is not kid-friendly, but it does feature an incredibly cute alien who has a devious plan for world domination. The Seed is produced by Shudder, Camelot Films and Hardman Pictures, in association with Lipsync Productions, Amp International, The Malta Film Commission and Ingenious Media. The film is written and directed by British filmmaker Sam Walker in his feature film debut.
The Seed stars Lucy Martin (Vikings) as Diedre, Sophie Vavasseur (Resident Evil: Apocapylse) as Heather, and Chelsea Edge (I Hate Suzie) as Charlotte, a group of friends who have bonded over their social media channels. They decide to go to Heather’s family home in the Mojave Desert for a girls’ getaway and to film the upcoming meteor...

Childhood friends Charlotte (Chelsea Edge), Heather (Sophie Vavasseur), and Deidre (Lucy Martin) never get to hang out anymore. Adulthood has a tendency of keeping once-inseparable cliques apart, but they’re hoping a once-in-a-lifetime meteor shower is just the excuse to finally get them together again. What better reason is there for Heather to use her father’s isolated modern mansion in the middle of nowhere? She can cajole Charlotte’s analog and low-maintenance “nerd” away from her 9-to-5 grind, as well as Deidre’s ultra-popular social-media influencer from her hectically vapid life by promising peace and quiet to the former and scenic livestream views to the latter. Maybe they’ll even have fun breaking from their usual routines to remember who they were all those years ago.
It’s a solid entry point into writer-director Sam Walker’s feature debut The Seed because it sets up conflict rooted in their pasts.

"Killing it is the kind thing." Shudder has unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror dark comedy thriller titled The Seed, which first premiered at last year's Beyond Fest. Poor Alice. Will her epic war with the undead and the corrupt Umbrella Corporation ever end?
We kind of hope not, 'cause that would mean no more "Resident Evil" movies. Alice (Milla Jovovich) returns in the fifth(!) chapter, "Resident Evil: Retribution," in theaters this Friday. Her journey has been long, hard and more complicated than you might imagine; as such, we thought a refresher course of sorts was in order before you check out her latest battle against the victims — and creators — of that damn T-virus.
So, join us through the many levels — er, installments — of the movie series based on Capcom's iconic survival horror video games.

Although there are no scares to be found, the real fright is in seeing how this young lady deal with life lessons and responsibilities she tends to avoid. Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

Debuting on U.S. DVD today from IFC Films and Mpi Media Group, Manuel Carballo’s Exorcismus (a.k.a. The Possession Of Emma Evans) is the latest variation on the time-honored terror trope—with an updated twist. Here, the focus is not on an innocent child but on emotionally troubled teenager Emma, whose conflicts with her parents only get worse when a demonic force infects her. Fango spoke to actress Sophie Vavasseur, who brought Emma and her torment to life on screen.

Exorcismus, the devilish 2010 Spanish horror film, will come to DVD from IFC on June 7.
Priest are called in to drive the evil spirits from Sophie Vavasseur in Exorcismus.
Demonic possession films are the happening horror subject of late, with The Last Exorcism now on DVD and The Rite just announced.
Directed by Manuel Carballo and entitled The Possession of Emma Evans in its native country, the movie tells of secluded, home-schooled teenager Emma (Sophie Vavasseur) whose uncontrolled behavior causes her to believe she is possessed by the devil. When terrible things start to happen to Emma’s friends and family, her parents grudgingly call in the help of her uncle (Stephen Billington), a priest who attempts to drive out the evil spirits with an exorcism

Earning double points in the poor taste stakes of shameless self-promotion, straight-to-video horror mess Exorcismus – written by David Muñoz, a financial advisor by trade, who occasionally dabbles in film – has been sold not only on the basis that it is from Filmax, the studio behind the brilliant [Rec] films, but also that it “stars” Doug Bradley, better known to horror aficionados as Hellraiser’s iconic ghoul Pinhead. That the film shares practically no DNA with either [Rec] film (aside from also having a Spanish director), and that Bradley’s “starring role” actually consists of a two-minute cameo near the end, is quite the indication of quite how feverishly the film’s marketers had to scrape the bottom of the barrel in order to drum up some fuss about this ghastly horror pic.
Socially awkward, home-schooled teenager Emma (Sophie Vavasseur) one day begins to suffer from convulsions and act out in ways that she has no memory of.

Stars: Sophie Vavasseur, Stephen Billington, Richard Felix, Jo-Anne Stockham, Doug Bradley | Written by David Munoz | Directed by Manuel Carballo
Exorcismus tells the story of troubled teenager Emma (Vavassuer) who suddenly becomes prone to fits and displays strange and aggressive behaviour. Her family think she merely needs psychiatric help, that is until Emma suddenly levitates in the family kitchen! Realising there maybe more to Emma’s odd behaviour, her parents bring in Christopher, a priest, to exorcise whatever demon is possessing her. But her exorcism is only the beginning…
There are some films that come out of nowhere and surprise you – Exorcismus is one such film. What ostensibly starts as a rip-off of The Exorcist, the film takes a turn in its final act that, like The Last Exorcism, changes everything we’ve seen before and turns the movie from a mere horror film about exorcism to a story about mans greed,...

In recent years, and especially since the release of 2007’s The Orphanage, Spanish horror has started to challenge its Japanese rival. The production company behind [Rec] and [Rec] 2, bring us a UK-set imaginative take on the age-old exorcism movie...
Fifteen year-old Emma is a normal moody teenager, drinking, making-out with boys, baby-sitting her younger brother and ranting and raving when she doesn’t get her way. Educated at home but keen to attend the local school, she hangs around with older neighbours who share her rock-chick ways, trying to tempt her with concerts. Frustrated by her parents’ rules, Emma starts to self-harm but what at first appears to be an innocent cry for help soon turns into something more sinister.
An inexplicable fit leads to Emma hearing muffled sounds, getting rashes and having vomiting fits. It’s only after her psychologist dies during a hypnosis session and she starts to levitate, that...

After all these years, it’s very clear to see and say that The Exorcist (here) has an absolute stranglehold on the possession genre. It’s the end all, be all, or as our own Jason Bene said here in his review of the better-than-most exorcism movies – The Last Exorcism – quite frankly (and I quote), “The Exorcist is the motherf*cker of all horror movies”. I don’t think there’s another film within a genre that has such a huge gap in its merits to the next best possible film from that genre. So, it should come to no surprise that when I say Exocismus: The Possession of Emma Evans (La posesión de Emma Evans) is confidingly average. It’s far from a dance with the Devil, but it’s a decent two-step with Him, and a far more interesting expose of the errors of home schooling than a horror film.

IFC continues to do themselves proud. They seem to have a love of quality film that is not constrained by genre. My first real experience with them was when they aired the horror themed documentary The American Nightmare over the Halloween season years ago. I was blown away and gained huge respect for the company. I still watch it every now and then to remind myself how good horror can be.
As announced recently IFC will be distributing the french zombie film The Horde and now have added two more foreign horror flicks to their catalog, this time both originating from Spain.
The films are Manuel Carballo’s supernatural chiller Exorcismus and Miguel Ángel Vivas’ home-invasion flick Kidnapped. Both films will be released through the IFC Midnight label theatrically and on its video-on-demand platform in early 2011.

Exorcismus, or The Possession of Emma Evans as it may be called, is an English language horror from the producers of [Rec]and [Rec]2 and there’s a new trailer out in the open today.
If you’re looking forward to Daniel Stamm’s The Last Exorcism then you might want to check out this trailer as it has similar themes and, perhaps inevitably, centres itself around the strange behaviour of a young girl who may, or may not, be possessed*.
In common with the [Rec] films the strange happenings and subsequent exorcisms are captured on a video camera, although as you’ll see from the trailer the movie is filmed conventionally and not as a mock/documentary.
The film was directed by Manuel Carballo and stars Doug Bradley, Tommy Bastow, Stephen Billington and Sophie Vavasseur as Emma.
Personally I’m tiring of this scenario. Why can’t we have a demonic outbreak...

Exorcismus Int' PosterFilmax International is distributing Exorcismus, a tale of a fifteen year old girl and her demonic possession. The film's alternate title is The Possession of Emma Evans. This is a strange title for a film where the lead character is named Emma Hawkins, as shown in the synopsis. Either way, Filmax is one of the biggest distributors of independent films in Europe and here is one vote for the film coming to North American shores. Watch as Emma shows the full power of the underworld through her twisted movements and bloodshot eyes.

It’s not new news that a trailer for the Spanish horror movie Exorcismus - recently re-badged to the painfully generic The Possession of Emma Evans - has already hit the web, but as the Spanish official site for the film has just gone live with an uber high-res version of the trailer, we thought it worth a quick look. Manuel Carballo is directing, whilst Sophie Vavasseur leads a cast, including; Tommy Bastow, Stephen Billington and Douglas Bradley. The trail is Spanish dubbed, but still gives you a good idea of what we can expect.
