Nastier than my ex: Gina Varela is a Nazi demoness in The Devil's Rock.
A shapely Nazi demoness ignites a bloody World War II battle from Hell in The Devil’s Rock, a 2011 action-horror war movie from New Zealand.
The film has a pretty straight-ahead albeit colorful story: On the eve of D-Day, two Allied commandos (Craig Hall of 30 Days of Night and Joseph Tane of TV’s Spartacus: Blood and Sand) are sent to destroy a German gun installation. Moving forward on their mission, the pair uncover a secret occult lair housing a mysterious Nazi officer (Matthew Sunderland, Under the Mountain) and his beautiful but devilish captive (sexy Gina Varela). Well, it turns out the Nazis are actually hiding a deadly she-demon, whom they plan to use to turn the tide of the war.

When there is a film that is about Nazis dabbling with the occult, ears are going to perk, and the question is would it have turned the tide of World War II? With The Devil’s Rock, all those tender loving thoughts are going to get explored again with its DVD release Feb 14.
Shades of Enemy Mine can be found at one level, and some nods to the Indiana Jones franchise can be found at another. The Nazis did try to look for the Spear of Destiny, Ark of the Covenant and Holy Grail before and during the war. Viewers who are not acquainted with history or archaeology may not know of Hitler’s preoccupation with connecting to the occult.

So, what’s it really like to make a go of it on the festival circuit, especially when you’re a much beloved cult filmmaking icon? The Washington City Paper runs a timeline of Jeff Krulik’s Heavy Metal Picnic film festival odyssey of 2011 — and it’s not a rosy journey. Much of the article is framed by a series of update emails that Krulik sends to his supporters, a group of people of which I’m a member. And those emails, thanks to Krulik’s incredible directness, frequently include some of the most hilarious exchanges ever. (The great portrait of Krulik above by Darrow Montgomery is from the article.)The Count Gore De Vol documentary Every Other Day Is Halloween is still racking up great reviews, this time from the Spooky Vegan. If you haven’t had the chance to enjoy this gem yourself, this is the perfect time of year to do so.

Director: Paul Campion. Review: Adam Wing. Paul Campion is best known for his visual effects work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Chronicles of Narnia. The Devil’s Rock is his feature length debut, but it’s probably worth baring in mind that the two shorts he made in preparation for this were called Eel Girl and Night of the Hell Hamsters, which make The Devil’s Rock sound like a dull proposition by comparison. It’s the eve of D-Day and allied commandos are carrying out sabotage raids on the German occupied Channel Islands to draw attention away from Normandy. On Forau Island, two New Zealand comrades, Captain Ben Grogan (Craig Hall) and Sergeant Joe Tane (Karlos Drinkwater) have been sent to destroy gun replacements, but after negotiating a tricky route to their target, a woman’s screams lure them into an isolated fortress. It’s...

The Tree Of Life (12A)
(Terrence Malick, 2011, Us) Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Hunter McCracken, Laramie Eppler, Sean Penn, Tye Sheridan. 139 mins
Successor to Kubrick's 2001 or extended perfume ad? Either way, Malick's macro/microcosmic take on life, the universe and family life makes most films look unadventurous. Beyond the head-trip "creation of the universe" sequences, it's largely Sean Penn's impressionistic reminiscence of his conflicted childhood, rendered in gorgeous imagery, with introspective voiceovers and a dreamy intensity.
The Princess Of Montpensier (15)
(Bertrand Tavernier, 2010, Fra) Mélanie Thierry, Gaspard Ulliel, Lambert Wilson. 140 mins
There's costumes and courtliness, but this 16th-century saga remains unstuffy. Sought-after Thierry's quest for self-determination is the focus, and the treatment is modern and immediate.
Trust (15)
(David Schwimmer, 2010, Us) Liana Liberato, Clive Owen, Catherine Keener. 106 mins
Those who saw Catfish will know where this teen's online relationship with an apparently nice boy is headed. But what follows is an exercise in parent-worrying technophobia.

You know that you are in for a treat when you read "from the director of Eel Girl." Paul Campion is the director behind the New Zealand shot The Devil's Rock and this is one horror film that grabs your attention. Many features have equated the Nationalist Socialist Worker's Part (Nazi) with the occult and the supernatural, including Blood Creek, starring Dominic Purcell. This time, the Gestapo come in devilish disguise and female form, while using pentagrams to summon even more minions.
Recently, The Devil's Rock has been picked up for North American distribution (Dread Central) and horror fans can watch the early events of World War II, including D-Day, with this first trailer for the film. Prepare to face one of the most villainous forces from the 19th Century, in demon form!

I had the pleasure of seeing director Paul Campion's fun short film Night of the Hell Hamsters at the Another Hole in the Head film festival many years ago. So I was very excited when I heard about his new feature length film, The Devil's Rock, which premiered at the Cannes Film festival this past Friday. The WW2 horror film was shot in 15 days in Wellington, New Zealand. It stars Craig Hall (30 Days of Night), Matthew Sunderland, Gina Varela and Karlos Drinkwater ("Kerza", Spartacus: Blood and Sand). Check out the trailer for The Devil's Rock below.
