While as Captain of Squad 41 in the Bronx, was awarded FDNY's William F. Conran Medal for rescuing a man from a dangerous fire. According to a FDNY webpage "Captain William J. Walsh operated in extremely punishing and dangerous conditions, with no regard for his own personal safety. His actions are, therefore, befitting of recognition in the finest traditions of the New York City Fire Department. He is honored with the William F. Conran Medal." (June 2006)

Competing in a cross-country bicycle tour with 34 other members of FDNY to raise funds for the Uniformed Firefighter Association's Widows' and Children's Fund. 3,336 miles in 42 days, Los Angeles to New York City. (2004)
