Shogun star Hiroyuki Sanada has grabbed a good deal of attention with his groundbreaking performance, and last night, he received a Screen Actors Guild Award for his efforts.
As big business bros run streaming services into the ground or sell off treasured IPs for quick cash, FX actually cares about storytelling. Actually cares about television.
It is no surprise that Shogun, a spectacular historical drama set near the end of Japan’s Sengoku jidai, became one of 2024’s most critically acclaimed productions.
Actor Hiroyuki Sanada portrays daimyo Yoshii Toranaga on the hit series. But fans are also curious about his personal life.

As we gear up for the big afternoon on the beach this Saturday, now’s a great time to get to know your nominees. Hopefully you’ve seen their films, and if you’re a Film Independent member, watched your screeners and voted too. But there’s nothing quite like hearing about the process from the creative minds themselves.
That’s exactly what we did with this year’s Directors Close-Up, where we brought together the nominees from some of the top filmmaking categories, to talk shop. Over two weeks this February, we held Zoom sessions for our members, where these creators tell how exactly they got their projects off the ground, the creative choices they made, and what inspires them.
If you missed them live, we’ve got you covered. Let’s take a look at all the action from this year’s Directors Close-Up:

Aside from the peculiar appearance of a certain flightless waterfowl, Saturday night’s WGA Awards were a familiar affair.
“Hacks” won its second trophy in four years for Best Comedy Series, as well as its second trophy in the same span for Best Episodic Comedy, continuing a victory parade that began at the 2024 Emmys when it upset “The Bear” for the top prize. That hot streak has continued into 2025 with wins at the Casting Society of America, Costume Designers Guild Awards, Directors Guild Awards, Producers Guild Awards, and AFI Awards, among others. With Season 4 having wrapped production in January, creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky’s Max original should enter the 2025 Emmy season as the presumptive favorite.
The season’s dominant drama, “Shōgun,” won’t be back in time to compete in 2025 — the writers’ room is still plugging away at Season 2 — but its Season 1 winning streak also...

Everyone was surprised when FX said it was ordering not one but two more seasons of Shōgun, its award-winning samurai drama from last year. Sure, the show was a big success, but the first season adapted the whole of James Clavell's novel, Shōgun. That meant that showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks were going to have to go off-book and come up with a whole new idea for what comes next.
At one point, it sounded like they were having trouble, but they must have broken through, because Marks sounded optimistic when talking to Deadline at the Critics Choice Awards. “We’re coming out of the writers room now. We’re also done with the 10 episodes and we have our finale now," he said. "That’s allowing us to start figuring out how we’re going to shoot this. But we’re very excited about the plan.

When news came that FX's historical drama series Shōgun had been renewed not only for a second season, but a third, I think us fans had mixed reactions. And if I'm being honest, I still feel that way. Especially since the first season has already fully adapted James Clavell's book, which the show is based on.
However, the writers and creators of the television series have proven that they were able to bring a wonderful story to life in a captivating way. So perhaps we don't need to be worried about Shōgun season 2. Whether you're excited about the story continuing or not, we now have an update about the next chapter!
In speaking with Deadline, co-creator Justin Marks shared that all the scripts have now been written for Shōgun season 2, including the finale of the upcoming 10-episode season. The writers room is basically wrapped, which means the team...

Shōgun, FX's historical fiction drama set in 17th century Japan, was the best TV show of 2024. Naturally, FX ordered a second season, which is tricky because the first season adapted the whole of James Clavell's novel Shōgun. The writers have run out of book. What are they to do?
They've been trying to figure that out. Last month, showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo said work was ongoing, but it didn't sound like they were certain a second season would truly happen. “We’re still trying. We haven’t given up. And I’m not sure what we can say," Kondo said. “We’re about six weeks from the end of the writers room,” added Marks.
They may have had a breakthrough since then, as star Hiroyuki Sanada told Variety that producers are aiming to start filming on season 2 in "the fall of this year":

Creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks have given an exciting update on Shōgun season 2, with the series set to go into production this autumn.
Shōgun was undoubtedly one of the best TV shows of 2024, and despite the series adapting all of its source material, James Clavell’s novel of the same name, two more seasons went into early development almost immediately. No wonder: the series has swept the table at almost every awards show on the planet.
Chatting to Deadline at the Critics’ Choice Awards over the weekend, creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks revealed that the scripts for Shōgun season 2 are complete.
“We’re coming out of the writers room now,” Marks said. “We’re also done with the 10 episodes and we have our finale now. That’s allowing us to start figuring out how we’re going to shoot this. But we’re very excited about the plan.

“Shogun” star Hiroyuki Sanada said Season 2 of the Emmy-winning FX series could begin shooting as early as this fall.
“We are aiming for the fall of this year, and the writers’ room is working so hard now,” Sanada told Variety Saturday at AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards in Los Angeles. “We’re going to have half [of the Season 1] cast remaining, and then half new cast coming. We are finding the best crew for next season now, so I’m excited.”
“Shogun” Season 2 has yet to receive the official greenlight from FX, but talent both behind and in front of the camera has teased what’s to come from the 17th-century drama. In January, creator and executive producer Rachel Kondo said development for the new season is “ongoing,” but was hesitant to disclose further details.

Though Toranaga does not control the wind, Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor that plays him in Shōgun, holds the forecast for the series’ Season 2 in the palm of his hand.

In Best Original Screenplay, Anora and Challengers are up against A Real Pain, Civil War, and My Old Ass. The Best Adapted Screenplay lineup features A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys, and Wicked.
The nominations were announced Wednesday, a week after the guild postponed its scheduled Jan. 9 announcement due to the Los Angeles wildfires.
As previously reported, dozens of scripts — including several top Oscar hopefuls — were ineligible for consideration this year. A screenplay is ineligible if it’s produced outside of the WGA’s collective bargaining agreement or written by a non-union member.
The ineligible adapted scripts were Golden Globe champ Conclave (by Peter Straughan), Emilia Pérez (by Jacques Audiard), I’m Still Here (by Walter Salles), Inside Out 2 (by Meg LeFauve and Dave Holstein with a...

Even if the quality of the series from the US seems to deteriorate with time and the plethora of offerings, Asia, on the other hand, seems to retain and even increase the level of standards regarding drama, with the transition from towards “TV” of Korean talent, and the ever present ‘workaholism’ of the actors in J-dramas leading the way. Add to that the fact that the production values, with the streamers investing more and more, continues to get higher, the opening to Indonesia, which seems the next big market, and the heavy investment by Taiwan, and you have the backbone of what is happening in the drama world at the moment. In that setting, the awards “Shogun” got in this year’s Golden Globes seems like the cherry on top.

About sixteen years have gone by since we first heard that Sony was developing a film adaptation of the video game Shadow of the Colossus, a project that passed through the hands of Chronicle director Josh Trank and Shōgun writer Justin Marks before Andy Muschietti, who has gone on to direct the It films and The Flash, came on board in September of 2014. When you haven’t heard anything about a project in ten and a half years, you can usually safely assume that it has been scrapped – but during an interview with Radio Tu, he said that Shadow of the Colossus is not an abandoned project. He still hopes to make the movie… he’s just having trouble getting studio support for it.
Originally released in 2005, the video game Shadow of the Colossus focuses on a young man, known only to the audience as Wander (or “the Wanderer”), who...

As Shogun asserted its dominance at the Golden Globes, the series received an exciting Season 2 update from creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks.
After recounting the events of James Clavell's beloved book of the same name, it was revealed shortly following the release of the first season that the FX historical drama would receive a second and third season, this time following an original story set in Shogun-era Japan.
This came despite reports the series' creatives had only ever envisioned Shogun as a single-season mini-series, with Marks telling fans in the lead-up to the Season 1 finale, "We took the story to the end of the book and put a period at the end of that sentence."

The Golden Globe awards took place this last weekend, and to the surprise of no one, FX's feudal Japan drama Shōgun took home several awards. The show won Best Drama Series, Hiroyuki Sanada (Yoshii Toranaga) won Best Drama TV Actor, Tadanobu Asano (Kashigi Yabushige) won Best TV Supporting Actor, and Anna Sawai (Toda Mariko) beat out House of the Dragon's Emma D'Arcy to take home the win for Best Drama TV Actress. Regardless of the competition, Shōgun was such a pitch perfect show that you'd have been crazy to bet against it.
Part of the reason Shōgun was so effective was that it told a complete, extremely powerful story; the show was designed as a limited series and covered the entirety of the classic 1975 novel by James Clavell. That's a huge advantage over a show like, say, Squid Game, which ended its second season on a massive cliffhanger...

"Severance" Season 2 can't come soon enough. Fans of Dan Erickson's visually and psychologically arresting science fiction drama have had to wait nearly four years to learn the fates of Lumen Industries employees Mark (Adam Scott), Helly (Britt Lower), Dylan (Zack Cherry), and Irving (John Turturro), all of whom had their lives and livelihoods put in jeopardy as a consequence of Season 1's cliffhanger finale.
For the uninitiated, the Apple TV+ series explores a not-too-distant future in which a corporation can sever or bifurcate a person's mind so that they essentially have two sets of separate memories -- one as the person they are in their personal life, and another as the person they are when they come to work. This essentially creates two separate people who share one body, one of whom spends the entirety of their life working a mind-numbing office job.

Right now, FX on Hulu's Shōgun is the show of the moment. Not only did the series earn overwhelmingly positive reception from critics and pick up millions upon millions of streams, but Shōgun won 18 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. To add to its good fortune, the series just swept the Golden Globes, too, taking home all four awards it was up for.
Even though Shōgun was originally intended to exist as a limited series, its pop cultural explosion naturally led to FX and Hulu rethinking the strategy. Now, a second and third season are in active development, and following the show's domination at the 2025 Golden Globes, fans received a major update on the status of the highly anticipated season 2.
But it's not all good news. Depending on how you view the update — glass half full vs. glass half empty — you might be excited or you might be disappointed.

Audiences are going to have quite a bit of waiting to do before Season 2 of Shōgun, as the upcoming installment is still being written.

Marks and the rest of the cast and crew remained quiet on any details regarding the new season, or when production will begin. Deadline reported in May that the writers room was assembled last year and began over the summer.

Shōgun season 2's writing gets a positive update from creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks after its Golden Globe wins. While the end of Shōgun season 1 finished adapting James Clavell's 1975 novel, its massive success on Hulu and FX prompted the development of season 2, continuing the story from where the season 1 finale left off. Its success continued at the Golden Globes, winning four awards for Best Television Series, Best Actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and Best Actress (Anna Sawai) in the Drama category, alongside Best Supporting Actor (Tadanobu Asano) in Series, Miniseries or Television Film.

“Shogun” is moving closer to a new season. Hot off its awards dominance at the 2025 Golden Globes — winning the drama series prize, as well as three acting wins — the writers behind “Shogun” are busy at work on where the series goes next.

FX’s Shōgun continued its awards sweep from the Emmys at the Golden Globes, winning the Best Television Series – Drama category in addition to Lead Actor in a Television Series – Drama for Hiroyuki Sanada, Lead Actress for Anna Sawai and Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano.
Unlike the Emmys, where FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s novel competed as a drama and the 1980 NBC take as a miniseries, at the Globes both incarnations were classified as drama series, so Season 1 of the FX saga took the same Drama Series category its predecessor did 44 years ago.
Just as he did at the Emmys, Justin Marks, Shōgun co-creator, executive producer and showrunner alongside his wife, Rachel Kondo, accepted the top drama award. He framed his speech with an amusing domesticity anecdote.
“Yesterday, Rachel and I were scouring the ferns of our house looking for a 50-pound tortoise that we adopted for some reason that keeps escaping.

Shogun took home the Golden Globe trophy for best TV drama series Sunday.
Justin Marks, creator of the historical FX samurai series, when accepting the award following an earlier triumph at the Emmys recalled the absurdity of a day earlier looking with wife and series co-creator Rachel Kondo in their garden at home for a lost 50-pound tortoise.
“Nothing about this show has ever been expected. Truly, it was made on the backs of thousands of yesses that we received over the years from our East-meets-West cast and crew, an extraordinary cast standing right here. To our writer and our directors and our partners at Disney Television, FX and Hulu, all of you guys said yes so many times over the years to a show that on paper you should, quite frankly, have never said yes to. It’s a miracle that everyone still have their jobs,” Marks said from the Golden Globes stage.

Shōgun took home the Best Television Series Drama award at the Golden Globes on Sunday, sweeping all four categories for which the historic epic was nominated. The FX series, a fan favorite among television critics, was up against other hit dramas: The Diplomat, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Slow Horses, Squid Game, and The Day of the Jackal.
As showrunner Justin Marks accepted the award, he delved into the duality of searching for his newly adopted 50-pound tortoise around his home the day before and standing on stage in front of Harrison Ford’s Han Solo.

“Shōgun” proves triumphant, capping off an awards season run that includes wins for Outstanding Drama Series at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards, Program of the Year from the Television Critics Association, and now the Golden Globe for Best Television Series — Drama.
The FX/Hulu historical series based on the novel by James Clavell seized the top award on Sunday, beating out Netflix’s “The Diplomat” and “Squid Game,” as well as Amazon’s “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” Peacock’s “The Day of the Jackal,” and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses.”
“Shōgun” wins for its first season, with Seasons 2 and 3 now in early development. It was initially conceived as a miniseries, just as the 1980 adaptation featuring Richard Chamberlain and Toshiro Mifune had been, but as a result of the show’s strong critical reception and viewership around the globe, FX/Hulu decided to expand the narrative into at least two more seasons.

Shōgun showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo break down how season 2 will move beyond the source material. Shōgun season 1 adapts James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name and covers the source material in its entirety. However, critical acclaim and the series becoming a record-breaking streaming hit led to Shōgun season 2 and 3 being greenlit. While this expansion is promising, it poses new challenges without having a story to directly adapt.
While speaking with Empire Magazine, Marks and Kondo explain how they are approaching season 2 without having source material to rely on. They discuss how season 2 is already more challenging because of this, but how it is feasible because of the opportunity to explore more characters and ideas from Clavell's original novel and from season 1. They also tease that they are on the precipice of figuring out the endgame for the new season. Check out their comments below:
Justin Marks: It's so much harder.

They discuss how season 2 is already more challenging because of this, but how it is feasible because of the opportunity to explore more characters and ideas from Clavell's original novel and from season 1. They also tease that they are on the precipice of figuring out the endgame for the new season. Check out their comments below:

Created by Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, FX's Shōgun first debuted on February 27, 2024. The series takes place in the year 1600 when Japan is on the cusp of a century-defining civil war. Hiroyuki Sanada stars as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who finds himself in danger from the Council of Regents. The rest of the main cast includes Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira, and Moeka Hoshi.
While a premiere date is yet to be announced, FX renewed the show for seasons 2 and 3 in May. Assistant Stunt Coordinator Sharlene Royer expresses her excitement to return to Shōgun, with the stunt team currently on standby. Royer became the first Black female stunt coordinator to win a Leo Award after her work on CBS' Tracker. She has also been involved with projects such as X-Men: Days of Future Past, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, Child's Play, and Star Trek Beyond.

Shōgun assistant stunt coordinator Sharlene Royer breaks down how the show pulled off Anna Sawai's spear fight. Based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell, the hit FX historical drama premiered earlier this year, chronicling Lord Toranaga's (Hiroyuki Sanada) quest for power in Feudal Japan. Sawai's Lady Mariko is a crucial figure in Shōgun's cast of characters, and she gets one major fight sequence in episode 9 as she attempts to leave Osaka. A real-life martial arts expert subsequently awarded Mariko's fight scene an eight out of 10 in terms of accuracy in a video for Insider.
During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Royer reveals that Sawai was actually sent to train with martial artists in Japan for Mariko's Shōgun episode 9 fight. The stunt coordinator explains that Sawai herself was a "good student" when it came to learning the techniques, and that a major focus was put on making sure the...

Six days before the debut of “Shōgun” last February, John Landgraf was worried about the “Endless Scroll.”
Sitting with his feet propped up on a low table in his office on the Fox lot in Los Angeles, the longtime head of FX explained what he meant with his signature soft-spoken, brainy intensity. The “endless scroll” is not a talisman from “Shōgun” or an artifact of the Middle Ages but rather a symptom of our times. It refers to the never-ending stream of content that so many of us now have at our fingertips.
When asked if he was worried viewers wouldn’t turn out for the most expensive production in the 30-year history of FX, Landgraf paused to think. Any butterflies he had about the show’s launch, he said finally, were wrapped up in his larger concern about the “endless scroll” effect that may be training us to have shorter and shorter attention spans.
