Hollywood remaking a foreign film is far from a new phenomenon, and adaption in this manner has yielded some truly great films. We have seen such successes like Seven Samurai transformed into The Magnificent Seven, and Infernal Affairs altered into The Departed.
On the other hand, there are movies like Brick Mansions. This remake of the Luc Besson / Pierre Morel French parkour action fest District B13 has much in common with the original including plot structure, action sequences, and even shares one of the co-leads. What it lacks is energy, craftsmanship, and originality. Fans of the original have little reason to examine this new take, and those coming in fresh will also find it difficult enjoy this tired dud of an action movie.

It was never going to be easy. Setting an action film in a block of flats in a world still gobsmacked by The Raid is the equivalent of hopping into bed with someone who's just had a fling with Dirk Diggler. Unsurprisingly, this Luc Besson-produced remake of his French movie District 13 falls short of the mark.
It's a simple story involving Paul Walker's undercover cop Damien being sent into a dilapidated and isolated neighbourhood governed by rapper RZA's crime lord Tremaine Alexander. He's a villain with a token eccentric quirk - instead of stroking a cat or feeding bits of human to a pet shark, he is often depicted cooking meals from his mother's recipes. That's in between callously killing people - even his own men - just...

Director: Camille Delamarre. Writers: Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri. Cast: Paul Walker, David Belle, RZA, Gouchy Boy and Catalina Denis. Brick Mansions is a remake of the French film District B13 (2004). Actor David Belle, the originator of Parkour, stars in both films and a sequel to District B13, titled District 13: Ultimatum (2009). All three films deal with a post-apocalyptic cityscape. As well, Brick Mansions continues to be shot in French locales, with the original shot in Paris and the remake shot in Montreal, Quebec. This second film is less gritty than the first and the PG-13 rating for the remake does not help with any sense of realism. Full of half-cocked political messages, Brick Mansions is a fairly standard action thriller, with Camille Delamarre's camerawork a little off-setting. This title takes place in 2018. In the future, parts of Detroit have been walled off, due to the unpoliceable nature of the streets.

Can this remake of a French film cut it in the action stakes? Ron checks our Brick Mansions, starring the late Paul Walker...
Paul Walker would have made a great Steve McQueen. Indeed, if there is such a thing as a modern Steve McQueen, it might just be Paul Walker. He was at home behind the wheel of a fast car, he was charismatic without trying too hard, he had wonderful blue eyes, and he had great comic timing. He was also a pretty solid actor during his life, though he was more popular than critically respected. If you want a guy to look awesome driving a car, Paul Walker was the guy to do so, and he's the acting center of Brick Mansions, an Americanization of Luc Besson's impressive Euro-action flick Banlieue 13 (Aka District 13 or District B13 if you're American).

I teared up during Brick Mansions. I know what you’re thinking – huh? But trust me, you may have a similar experience. The film, a remake of the influential French actioner District 13, marks one of the final big screen roles (and the last completed project) for Fast & Furious star Paul Walker, who died in a car accident last year. For me, the moment came when, after the final shot faded to black, a picture of the actor appeared on the screen, captioned with the words “In Loving Memory of Paul Walker.”
As he smiled out over the theater, many viewers stood to their feet, and we all applauded. For the first time since Walker’s death, I understood a little about the actor’s fans, and just how much Walker really meant to them. He was more than just another handsome A-lister with a devil-may-care attitude; Walker’s youthful features,...

Paul Walker's upcoming action film Brick Mansions actually looks like it will be a lot of fun to watch, regardless of RZA's inanely bad acting. The movie is a remake of District 13, and it was directed by Camille Delamarre from a script written by Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri.
The story follows "an undercover detective (Walker) chasing a weapon of mass destruction that was stolen by a drug dealer in the ghetto known as Brick Mansions. But in order to track him down, the detective must seek the help of Lino (David Belle) an incredibly agile man who knows Brick Mansions better than anyone and is the only person not cowering in fear of the resident drug dealers."
Brick Mansions will be released in theaters on April 25th.

As the Us remake of the French action film District 13, we have a broad idea of what to expect from the upcoming Brick Mansions, and its new trailer confirms those preconceived notions. Co-written by the legendary Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri – both of whom wrote the original – this updated version certainly looks to pack plenty of punch for fans of the action genre, if nothing else.
Featuring one of the last screen performances of the late Paul Walker, the film also stars RZA and David Belle – in the role similar to that which he played in District 13. It follows an undercover cop, as he chases down a stolen weapon of mass destruction to a tough neighbourhood known as Brick Mansions. Zeroing in on the mastermind behind the crime – a notorious drug lord – he must recruit local man Lino (David Belle) who knows the place, and the people, better than most.

The late Paul Walker is in full action-hero mode in the new trailer for Brick Mansions, one of the final films the actor shot before his untimely death in November. As undercover cop Damien Collier, Walker teams up with ex-con Lino (free-running expert David Belle) to take down drug lord Tremaine (RZA) in the Detroit projects known as Brick Mansions. Oh, and said underworld kingpin killed Collier’s dad, has kidnapped Lino’s girlfriend, and is hiding a weapon of mass destruction. How’s that for drama?

This spring brings one of the final performances of Paul Walker in the action thriller Brick Mansions, and the new trailer has plenty of shooting and parkour chases in this remake of District B13, complete with Walker in typical tough guy mode as he and David Belle try to take down a drug kingpin played by RZA. For undercover cop Damien Collier (Walker) every day is a battle against corruption. For Lino (Belle), every day is a fight to live an honest life. Their paths never should have crossed, but when drug kingpin, Tremaine (RZA) kidnaps Lino’s girlfriend, Damien reluctantly accepts the help of the fearless ex-convict. Watch now! Heading into Us cinemas this spring, action-thriller Brick Mansions marks the final full performance from the late Paul Walker.
Inevitably, with the former film marking his final full role and the latter his incomplete final role, both Brick Mansions and Fast & Furious 7 will be inextricably bound with the actor’s tragic and untimely death last year.
Ever one to take up a challenge, Walker leads the American adaptation of Pierre Morel’s acclaimed French-actioner, District 13. And with the film soon heading into cinemas, the first domestic and international trailers have debuted online, along with the recent first poster.
In a dystopian Detroit, abandoned brick mansions left from better times now house only the most dangerous criminals. Unable to control the crime, the police constructed a colossal containment wall around this area to protect the rest of the city. For undercover cop Damien Collier (Paul Walker) every day is a battle against corruption.

After seeing the first photo and poster for Brick Mansions, the upcoming American remake of District B13, today we finally get a trailer. As expected, it’s full of insane parkour stunts, explosive action and the late Paul Walker giving what looks to be another strong performance.
Co-starring RZA and David Belle (who had the lead role in the original), the film also has the benefit of being penned by District B13‘s writers, Luc Besson and Bibi Naceri. The plot, for those unfamiliar, follows Walker’s undercover cop, who has to head into the titular tenement in order to track down a nuclear weapon that was stolen by a ruthless drug dealer (RZA).
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a big fan of the original. When I heard that they were remaking it I was of course a bit weary but after watching the trailer, I think I’m sold.

"Brick Mansions: It's so dangerous we built a wall around it." Following yesterday's explosive poster for Brick Mansions, the first trailer for the film featuring one of the final performances of Paul Walker has arrived. And for those can't get enough of Walker in Fast & Furious mode, it looks like there's some car chase action too. It's a little bittersweet knowing he's gone, but Walker seems pretty bad ass in this flick. Plus RZA is the bad guy, so that's a decent bonus. Watch below! When Paul Walker tragically passed away, most of the attention was focused on Fast & Furious 7, and understandably so. However, the actor had several other films in the works as well at the time of his death. Brick Mansions, which is coming to theatres this Spring, was one of them.

Paul Walker movies: Few worthwhile efforts away from the ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise (photo: Paul Walker in ‘Hours’) (See previous post: “Paul Walker Dead: Fast and Furious Actor Killed in Fiery Car Crash.”) Aside from the Fast and Furious franchise, Paul Walker was featured in about 15 movies since the turn of the century; most of those were little-seen releases that did nothing to expand his following beyond fans of slick, high-speed shenanigans, e.g., John Glenn’s thriller and straight-to-dvd release The Lazarus Project (2008), co-starring Piper Perabo; Wayne Kramer’s box office bomb Running Scared, with Vera Farmiga; John Stockwell’s mix of deep-sea adventure and crime thriller Into the Blue, with Jessica Alba and Josh Brolin; and another straight-to-dvd effort, Mukunda Michael Dewil’s poorly received thriller Vehicle 19 (2013). Paul Walker’s handful of more prestigious and/or successful films were Clint Eastwood’s World War II drama Flags of Our Fathers...
