Shah Motia is a lifelong New Yorker and first-generation American of Iranian immigrant parents. He speaks English, Spanish, and Farsi (Persian).

Shah is also a founding member of the band Ex Models, which was among the vanguard of New York City's punk renaissance. Their unique meld of post-punk, no wave, and industrial music earned critical international acclaim in Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The New York Times, NME, and countless other outlets. They have headlined tours and supported acts such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deerhunter, The Faint, Tortoise, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Les Savy Fav, Deerhoof, Hella, Erase Errata, and many others.
