Whether we like it or not, AI is an increasingly pervasive part of modern life. Whereas only a few years ago discussions of AI seemed to refer to some distant future in which a Skynet-like super-intelligence would become self-aware, we suddenly find ourselves surrounded by chatbots, AI video and image generators, and a wholesale embrace of the technology by media companies. As a result, writers and actors were forced to strike over Hollywood's initial refusal to regulate the technology, and thankfully both strikes ended with protections against AI being well-established. But somehow it still feels like we're very much creeping towards a garbage future populated by AI-created films filled with virtual actors based on the stolen likenesses of established stars.
Another result of this rapid rise of AI is that Hollywood voice actors are now trapped between peril and possibility. Voice recreation technology is good enough that we have a...

Zoe Saldaña has spent decades at the center of some of the biggest cinematic franchises in history. Yet, her recent Oscar nomination for “Emilia Pérez” has marked a new career chapter. From the motion-capture world of “Avatar” to the high-stakes battles of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Saldaña has built a legacy as an action star. Now, she’s looking ahead to more personal creative pursuits, such as directing, exploring Latin American cuisine on screen, and, even watching more Mets games.
“I never imagined this moment,” Saldaña told Variety of her Oscar nomination for “Emilia Pérez. “After a while, I stopped imagining it. That has to do with my simple background. Whenever something beautiful happens, we are grateful and tell ourselves, ‘How dare you ask for more?’ But deep down, I always wanted this.”

Jake Tapper is broadening his definition of American impropriety.
The CNN anchor, who last year offered viewers a different side of his reportage with the documentary series, “United States of Scandal,’ will return for a second season starting March 9, still looking at political malfeasance but examining other areas as well.
“Last year we did a lot of D.C. politics and a lot of sex scandals,” Tapper notes during an interview. For the show’s next cycle, “we really tried to expand our aperture and look more widely at the American mosaic of sports and pop culture and business, and I think people will like it.”
“Scandal” is one of several CNN efforts to carry on with documentary programming despite cost pressures. Under Jeff Zucker, who ran CNN for a decade, the network built a new business in non-fiction programming that gave rise to celebrated travelogue programs from Anthony Bourdain...

What’s the deal with the film Academy’s documentary branch? This season’s shortlist for the best documentary feature Oscar, released Dec. 17, was missing one of the year’s most acclaimed crowd-pleasers, Warner Bros.’ Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story — which is at 98 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, won the top Critics Choice documentary award and is nominated for the Producers Guild’s top doc award — and also impressive documentaries about Martha Stewart (Martha), Celine Dion (I Am: Celine Dion), James Carville (Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid) and John Williams (Music by John Williams), among others.
This isn’t to say that the 15 docs that were shortlisted are lacking — to the contrary, most are excellent. But it does reconfirm the doc branch’s weird aversion, over roughly the past decade, to populist titles.

Since Joe Rogan left reality TV and sitcoms behind, he has become so rich that fans want to know how much he pays his staff. The way Joe did that was by launching his podcast, "The Joe Rogan Experience," interviewing stars like Post Malone, and gaining millions of listeners.
Many of Joe's fans still loved him after he called out The Big Bang Theory and criticized Taylor Swift in ways that outraged her fans. However, even though Howard Stern defended Joe and Jon Stewart had his back, he has also lost and angered some of his followers. For proof of that, all anyone has to do is look at the fact that some of Joe's fans questioned whether he was "insincere" on his podcast.

These are some of the magical loglines from this year’s annual Black List, a ranking of the most liked scripts in Hollywood that have not yet been made into films. Compiled annually by a group led by Franklin Leonard, a recipient of a Gotham tribute award this year, Variety waits with childlike anticipation each year to see which scripts film executives have really been buzzing over — but haven’t had the budget or the chutzpah to put into production just yet.
The Black List has yielded some major awards contenders and iconic films, including “Black Swan,” “Argo” and “The King’s Speech.

CAA and Untitled Entertainment had the most scripts in the 20th edition of The Black List, the annual compilation of Hollywood’s best-liked unproduced screenplays.
CAA scored 15 executive mentions, leading on the agency side for the fourth year in a row, with Untitled landing nine. Leading the pack with by far the most mentions, at 60, is Travis Braun’s One Night Only, about two strangers who scramble to find someone to sleep with on the one night of the year when premarital sex is legal. UTA and Echo Lake rep the scribe, who also topped the 2023 list with Bad Boy. Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge is on board to produce.
Untitled’s highest ranked script, at 38 mentions, is Natan Dotan’s Alignment, the hot AI-themed piece that Fifth Season recently secured in a seven-figure deal, with Makeready coming aboard to produce, as we were first to report. Securing 37 mentions, CAA...

The annual list of the town’s best-unproduced feature screenplays voted on by a group of 500 film executives features 83 scripts from writers, known and unknown, repped and unrepped.

When the crew aboard the S.A. Agulhas II set out in early 2022 to search for the Endurance shipwreck, it seemed nearly impossible.
“It’s the holy grail,” Nico Vincent, the sub-sea manager on the expedition, tells Variety. “It’s the most complicated one. Just being able to reach the field and dive three kilometers beneath the ice, it’s the level of complexity of walking on the moon.”
The Endurance, commanded by explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton on an expedition to traverse Antarctica from one coast to another, sank in the Weddell Sea in November 1915 as its 27-member crew looked on. Over the next 308 days, the men faced starvation and frostbite as Shackleton recruited five crew members to make the treacherous journey in a lifeboat to seek help on the South Atlantic island of South Georgia. Miraculously, when Shackleton returned to save the remaining men, he found all of them still alive.

Fact and Fiction in Gladiator II: Those Who Are About to Lie Salute You
Remember when Ridley Scott’s 2023 biopic Napoleon set off a firestorm among finicky French historians? How shocked, shocked they were by the film’s factual inaccuracies (zut alors, Bonaparte never led the charge at Waterloo!). Well, it looks like the 86-year-old Oscar-winning director is at it again (see page 56), only this time it’s scholars of ancient Rome who’ll be storming Scott Free Productions. Although Gladiator II has been warmly received at early screenings, the 150-minute movie, which opens Nov. 22, is clearly chock-full of historical whoppers — like that scene in which a flooded Colosseum is filled with sharks. “Total Hollywood bullshit,” snipes Dr. Shadi Bartsch, a classics professor at the University of Chicago who has degrees from Princeton, Harvard and Uc Berkeley and has written several books about ancient Rome. “I don’tthink Romans knew...

Update: Joe Biden got several standing ovations as he presented the National Medals of Arts and Humanities, including a moment when he referenced the presidential race as he talked about the power of women.
“I know the power of women to get things done, and also help the next generation of pioneers, proving a woman can do anything a man can do and then some. That includes being president of the United States of America.”
The remark drew large cheers and a standing ovation from the audience in the East Room, where Biden was joined by First Lady Jill Biden, National Endowment for the Arts chair Maria Rosario Jackson and National Endowment for the Humanities chair Shelly C. Lowe.
Among the recipients present were Steven Spielberg, LeVar Burton, Spike Lee, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Idina Menzel, Jon Meacham. Aaron Sorkin and Bruce Cohen.

Whether you think it was a hilarious exercise in creative chaos or just a bunch of dumb bullshit, you can’t deny that Francis Ford Coppola’s dubiously guided epic Megalopolis was a box-office disaster. Having brought in only about $4 million, it had the worst opening weekend of any widely released film with a budget over $100 million in history.
How did this happen? Well, being a man, Coppola spends a lot of time thinking about the Roman empire. He’s wanted to make a movie about it set in modern-day New York City since the 1970s, but almost as if the universe was trying to tell him something, life always got in the way. A string of box-office failures meant he had to focus on the surefire hits, like *consults notes* 1996’s Jack. Actors who had been cast years earlier had aged out of their roles. An entire 9/11 happened. These are what we call “signs.

CNN on Tuesday morning will take its second swing at trying to boost revenue from streaming video and digital content.
Most users of CNN.com will likely see no change in the experience they have each time they visit CNN.com, one of the biggest news sites in digital media. Marisa Abela is not well, bitch. Not just because the third season of her hit HBO series “Industry” is averaging 1.6 million cross-platform viewers per episode and was recently renewed for a fourth season, but also because one of the show’s fans happens to be a TV personality she’s a fan of herself. In a recent interview with The Cut, Abela revealed the “Real Housewife” who reached out over social media to show her support and some other sources of entertainment for when she’s not lighting up screens big and small.
“I love and watch most of the ‘Housewives’ franchises, which is really fun because Dorinda Medley is watching ‘Industry’ right now and Dm-ing me live updates. It’s the biggest thing ever,” said Abela. “It was so funny because she was messaging me about it while I was in Venice with very important and impressive people in my industry,...

As a setting for a TV show, fashion is a little like the restaurant industry: a rich, untapped source of detail and conflict, hindered by the logistical complexity of bringing its insular world to the screen. And just as “The Bear” was preceded by a legion of competitive reality shows, plus a misbegotten adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s “Kitchen Confidential” starring a young Bradley Cooper, the French drama “La Maison” is the latest of many attempts to make couture into compelling drama. “Project Runway” remains an unscripted institution, but recent scripted efforts have ranged from dutifully reverential (“Becoming Karl Lagerfeld”) to confoundingly inept.
Unlike these earlier series, which fictionalized the lives of icons like Yves Saint Laurent and Coco Chanel, “La Maison” gives itself the freedom to take liberties. Perhaps relatedly, it’s by far the strongest of the recent efforts to graft fashion onto entertainment. Created and showrun by...

This weekend at the Camden International Film Festival, the Archival Producers Alliance (APA) released the first-ever industry-wide guidelines for generative artificial intelligence use in documentary film. GenAI is a thorny topic throughout the film and TV world, but it poses specific and unique challenges to nonfiction, where primary sources, historical documentation, and archival imagery are fundamental building blocks.
The guidelines address this threat directly in its introduction: “The APA believes that the survival of the documentary industry — in all of its power and promise to help us understand and interpret our history and our present — is contingent on maintaining a truthful and transparent relationship with viewers.”
For this reason, the guidelines are focused explicitly on using GenAI to create new footage or alter existing primary source materials. The APA distinguishes between GenAI and other Machine Learning, or AI that is being incorporated into production workflows for ideation, transcription, and logging footage.

Filmmaker Morgan Neville has profiled some of the world’s most beloved entertainers: Mister Rogers, Anthony Bourdain, and Steve Martin, to name a few. With Piece by Piece, he can add Pharrell Williams to that list. While Neville’s ambitious animated documentary is a visual and sonic delight that lives up to the creativity of its subjects, audiences may walk away feeling unfulfilled by how little they learn beyond what they already know.
Piece by Piece Review
In Piece by Piece, Morgan Neville tells the story of Pharrell Williams, the multihyphenate record producer, singer, songwriter, and fashion designer who has become one of the most impactful musical artists of the 21st century. We follow Williams from his modest childhood in Virginia Beach, Virginia, throughout his entire music career.

Roy Wood Jr. is about to launch a new comedy show that will, if all goes well, feature people who aren’t supposed to be funny cracking wise on a network that isn’t known for making people laugh.
“I like comedy in tough places,” quips Wood.
He has found one. CNN — CNN? — will on Saturday launch Wood as host of “Have I Got News For You,” the U.S. version of a U.K. comedy mainstay. In “News,” two teams of comedians, newsmakers, actors and media personalities use news clips and headlines to drum up jokes and gags, all improv-style, though a round of different segments. Amber Ruffin, the actor and late-night writer, and Michael Ian Black, an actor, improv comedian and author, will serve as team captains each week.
One element that might bring the show broader appeal, says Wood, is the desire to get newsmakers — even polarizing ones — to take part.

Even at the height of its power, which was built (in part) on a series of sexual how-to guides and the second-hand credibility of an HBO documentary series, Vice wasn’t big on teaching people anything they didn’t already know. No, Vice was all about access. It was all about telling stories from the inside out, irrespective of journalistic ethics or integrity, in order to seduce the internet generation with the truth of a world too fluid and fucked up for the New York Times to understand.
That truth was typically facile and/or exaggerated, but the illusion of extreme reporting played to the strengths of a brand that had always profited from selling freaks to squares, and supercharging that brand with the strength of traditional media turned it into an empire once valued at six billion dollars. I mean, it’s not like CNN could have — or would...

The title of Eddie Huang’s new documentary says it all: “Vice Is Broke.” The media company that defined counterculture sensibilities filed for bankruptcy in 2023. And Huang — the multitalented author, on-camera personality, and documentarian — began his new film with a grievance.
First, Huang says in an interview, he had a personal falling-out with controversial Vice executive Shane Smith, the face of the brand and the mastermind of the company’s scaling-up beyond what was sustainable. (Huang declines to go into the nature of the offense.) Then, he noticed that he was owed money for his on-camera work for Vice, including the TV series “Huang’s World,” in which he traveled and experienced other cultures in the style of his role model and late friend, Anthony Bourdain.
“I had been asking for an accounting since 2018,” Huang says. “They kicked the can down the road and never paid me my residuals. The bankruptcy...

Francis Ford Coppola is detailing just how influential late icon James Gandolfini was on “Megalopolis.”
Coppola told Rolling Stone that his long-gestating script for the epic was almost greenlit back in 2001. During that time, Coppola conducted table readings of an earlier “Megalopolis” draft with actors Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Edie Falco, and Uma Thurman. While none of these stars appear in the 2024 feature, it turns out that “Megalopolis” has a deeper “Sopranos” connection beyond just Falco being part of the initial ensemble.
“The Sopranos” lead star Gandolfini actually was also part of that first table reading, and gave feedback on the script. Gandolfini was cast in the co-lead role as the mayor; Giancarlo Esposito now stars as the character in the film.
“It was the pregnant version of it, but it wasn’t all that similar,” Coppola said. “There were different periods where I took stabs at it. What...

Film studio A24 is in discussions to make a movie about the life of celebrity chef and TV host Anthony Bourdain. The proposed film would tell the story of Bourdain’s early career as a chef in New York City before he became well known for his books and TV shows.
The movie, currently called either “Tony” or “The Dish,” could star rising actor Dominic Sessa in the lead role. Sessa would portray a younger version of Bourdain. If made, the biopic would be directed by Matt Johnson and produced by production company Star Thrower. Emily Rose would serve as the executive producer.
Bourdain started his career by graduating from the Culinary Institute of America and then working in restaurant kitchens in New York. He eventually became the executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles. His first book, “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly,” described what really happens in restaurants...

By the time the world discovered Dominic Sessa, it was too late for him to play his real celebrity doppelgänger, Bob Dylan. That honor, of course, went to Timothée Chalamet, who’s getting tangled up in blue (and singing it himself!) for James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, out in theaters December 25. However,...

The Holdovers breakout lead Dominic Sessa is reportedly in negotiations to star in an Anthony Bourdain biopic.
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to listen to the late Anthony Bourdain talk about food, and more specifically, the way his life was connected to food (ever since his first oyster as a young boy) there’s something undeniably cinematic about it. From the tough kitchens he worked in when he started out to the immense pressure he faced as he rose to the very top.
It’s a fascinating setup that we’ve seen used across media, from reality TV shows like Hell’s Kitchen or an endless assortment of Netflix shows to dramas like The Bear... but it’s something that cinema has sometimes struggled with. In recent years we’ve seen some excellent examples in the genre such as Boiling Point and The Menu.
