As the only broadcast network airing Saturday’s “Miss Universe” pageant live from El Salvador, Telemundo aims to bring in big ratings after seeing “great results” last year, exec Ronald Day told TheWrap exclusively.
The 72nd edition of “Miss Universe,” which will debut at 6 p.m. Et/3 p.m. Pt on Telemundo, will be hosted in Spanish by Jacqueline Bracamontes and Danilo Carrera as 2022 winner R’Bonney Gabriel crowns her successor. The last “Miss Universe” pageant boosted Telemundo to become the most-watched Spanish-language network that night as it averaged 2.4 million total viewers and 875,000 in the key broadcast demo among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen figures.
For Day, who serves as entertainment and content strategy president for the Spanish-language network, the success of “Miss Universe” lies in the tradition, pride and celebration of the event, which follows in the footsteps of similar traditions for Hispanic communities, including baptisms, quinceañeras and weddings.

Despite the significant challenges they've faced in a male-dominated industry, Latina music artists are thriving. Karol G recently made history with her fourth album, "Mañana Será Bonito," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts No.1. And Shakira has had an epic year of back-to-back recording-breaking hits, including her viral diss track "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions #53."
In celebration of Latinas' success in music, Billboard and Telemundo have partnered for Billboard's first-ever Mujeres en La Música event, which honors Latin women in Spanish music. The inaugural event will take place on May 6 at the Watsco Center in Miami but airs on May 7 on Telemundo.
Reggaeton legend Ivy Queen, who received this year's Icon Award at Billboard's 2023 Women in Music event, will be cohosting the event alongside television personality Jacqueline Bracamontes.
Leila Cobo, Billboard's chief content officer for Latin/Español, says the inaugural event serves as an expansion of Billboard's Women in Music franchise.

Univision picks up 3 novelas
NEW YORK -- Univision made a strong pitch Wednesday for more Madison Avenue dollars, telling advertisers that it has a proven track record with tele-novelas, a wide lead in viewership among U.S. Hispanics and plenty of branded integration and product placement opportunities. The Univision broadcast network announced three new novelas: Heridas de Amor, about an up-and-down relationship starring Jacqueline Bracamontes and Guy Ecker; Duelo de Pasiones, filmed on a coffee plantation in Mexico; and La Verdad Oculta, the story of a wrongly imprisoned man trying to clear his name. A new sitcom, Que Madre, Tan Padre, follows a family where the husband loses his job and has to become the homemaker and chief parent while the mother gets a high-powered job to support them. Based on the success of its Mexican-produced big Sunday night dancing hit Bailando por un Sueno, Univision will expand its primetime variety shows to include a singing competition titled Catando por un Sueno. But like Bailando, contestants don't compete for personal fame but instead to make a wish come true. This year's Bailando winner received the means to have an operation performed on his ailing grandmother.
