At its most basic, possession horror exploits the primal fear of losing control over your own person, usually due to a demonic entity. Victims in a possession movie are rendered mere passengers in their bodies as a sinister force takes over and destroys them from the inside. That potent combination of body horror and a complete lack of free will makes for inherently terrifying and fertile ground for exploration. While possession horror is often tied to biblical battles of good versus evil, that’s not always the case.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to demonic possession horror titles that leave conventional depictions of faith and exorcisms behind for new terrain and metaphors.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Demon Wind – AMC+, Shudder, Tubi
Possession horror tends to take the possession seriously, opting for full-throttle scares and intense emotional or faith-related stakes.

Happy New Year and welcome back for our first Let’s Scare Bryan to Death of 2021, where I’m kicking things off with a really fun discussion with Renée Bever. You may know Bever as an artist, horror analyst, and co-host of the great Attack of the Queerwolf podcast. I already knew that this was going to be a treat given her thoughtful, empathetic, and often hilarious approach to interpreting horror films. What I did not know, however, was that when she nominated Adam Robitel’s 2014 found footage film The Taking of Deborah Logan, I was about to watch the best movie I’ve seen since I started this column.
The premise, as is the case in most found footage films, is pretty simple. A group of grad students led by young Mia (Michelle Ang) are making a documentary about Alzheimer’s disease, and the movie picks up as they...

Who knew you could get this much mileage out of a ghost named Toby? Nine years ago this week, Oren Peli started production on "Paranormal Activity," which was made for $27, a box of Band-Aids, and three plates of ham sandwiches. Truly independent in every way, the film premiered a year later at ScreamFest, and then… didn't come out for two more years. While "Paranormal Activity" is a remarkable success story, it's also not an instant one. Peli had to struggle to get his film from that first screening to a major theatrical release, and there were plenty of fine-tuning that had to be done to get it there. "Paranormal" has many godfathers, and by the time the film came out in 2009, it had been through many hands. The result, though, has been one of the biggest horror franchises in recent memory, and it laid the foundation for Jason Blum's entire horror empire.

Meet the Paranormal Activity film that promises to wrap the series up! Here's our review of The Ghost Dimension...
This is a spoiler-free review, which includes plot details from the previous five instalments in the Paranormal Activity series.
Back in 2009, Paramount masterminded a revolutionary marketing campaign for Oren Peli's micro-budget found footage horror movie Paranormal Activity. With endorsements from the likes of Steven Spielberg, it was arguably the most hyped film of its year and certainly the most profitable, returning $193m on a $15,000 budget.
Sequels abounded and the films comfortably usurped the annual Halloween slot occupied by the Saw franchise over the course of the following three sequels. 2013 was supposed to see two Paranormal Activity movies - a “Latin-American oriented” spin-off at the beginning of the year and then a fifth instalment at Halloween as usual, but the cool reception to Paranormal Activity 4 apparently led...

The first trailer for “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” suggests screenwriters Gavin Heffernan and Adam Robitel really liked “The Ring.” The upcoming horror movie will focus on an evil spirit that has found its way into a family’s home after the filmmaking dad watches a strange VHS tape he discovered in a box. But at least the familiar premise promises that audiences will actually see the supernatural activity in the sixth installment of the Paramount Pictures franchise. Along with the old tape, the protagonists find a weird camera that captures “spirit photography.” Also read: New 'Paranormal Activity,'...

Every secret will be revealed. Paramount Pictures has revealed the first official trailer for Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, supposedly the final feature in the Paranormal Activity franchise. Or at least the marketing is billing it as such: "Experience Paranormal Activity in a way you never have before as the series comes to a shocking end." That "way you never have before" means in 3D, since that's the extra "dimension" per the title. They even hid spooky ghosts in the 3D parts of the trailer, but since this is just viewable in 2D online it doesn't work as well. Take a look at the next entry in the Paranormal horror series. Here's the first trailer for Gregory Plotkin's Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension on YouTube: Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is directed by Gregory Plotkin (an editor on the Paranormal series making his feature directing debut), from a screenplay by Gavin Heffernan & Adam Robitel,...

We've known that a new Paranormal Activity movie has been in the works for some time, but it was revealed today that "The Ghost Dimension" will conclude the series. Due out on October 23rd, USA Today caught up with Jason Blum, who spoke about the popular franchise coming to an end:
"It's coming to an end. This is it, the finale... We're saying it before the movie opens. We're not going to grind this horror franchise into the ground. This will keep Paranormal Activity as part of this culture and this particular time in a really fantastic way."
Along with the promise that this movie will answer many of the series' burning questions, the first photos have also been shared. Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension was directed by Gregory Plotkin, and written by Adam Robitel and Gavin Heffernan. Be on the lookout for the first trailer later this week.

Guest poster Tim Sullivan shares the making of a head shattering scene in the recent festival hit, I Was A Teenage Wearbear.
One of the highlights of I Was a Teenage Werebear, mysegment of Chillerama (hitting the streets this coming Tuesday, November 29th where all brand new flicks are sold, rented, downloaded, illegally pirated etc… ) is a scene in which I, as the lecherous Coach Tuffman, have my head squashed by conflicted student Ricky O’Reilly (played by Sean Paul Lockhart) in rebuttal to my ‘generous’ offer to do for Ricky what ‘my wife will never do for me…”.
It’s a moment designed to be the first really big gross out moment of the film. The gasp inducing “Oh, no, they didn’t!” kill scene equivalent to the ‘Drawn and Quartering’ of the lovely Miss Pussy (Gina Marie Heekin) in 2001 Maniacs, and the ‘Buzz Saw Halving’ of siren Alana Curry in Field of Screams.

Here are a few interesting and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles:
Trouble with the Curve – A week after Clint Eastwood announced his return to acting with the baseball-themed, father-daughter drama for director Robert Lorenz, the pair have set their sights on Oscar winner Sandra Bullock for the role of Eastwood's daughter. Warner Bros. is producing.
Untitled Dr. Seuss Biopic – It's been hard to keep up with the number of development projects Johnny Depp's been attaching himself to lately. But, one of the more intriguing ones is the life story of popular children's book writer Theodor Geisel. Depp's eyeing the lead role and producing through his Infinitum Nihil company. Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures are also on board to produce.
Perry Mason – In addition to nabbing Adam Gibgot's Accidental Genius pitch for Warner Bros., Robert Downey Jr.'s Team Downey is looking to bring the iconic attorney to the big screen using the original 1930s-set novels written by Erle Stanley Gardner as the film's source material. The Iron Man himself is considering taking on the titular role.
The Liability – Tim Roth stars opposite Peter Mullan and Talulah Riley in this British thriller from director Craig Viveiros and writer John Wrathall. Corona Pictures' Richard Johns and Rupert Jermyn produce the film that Deadline describes as a "a darkly comic road trip."
The Poet in Exile – What if legendary rock star and former Doors front man, Jim Morrison, staged his death in 1971? That's the basis for this drama based on fellow Doors rocker Ray Manzarek's bestselling novel and produced by ClubHouse Entertainment. Tim and Liz Sullivan will write the project with Gavin Heffernan.

Tim Sullivan ("2001 Maniacs") is set to write, direct and produce an adaptation of Ray Manzarek's 2002 novel "The Poet in Exile" for his Clubhouse Entertainment production banner reports Variety.
Manzarek was a keyboardist and co-founder of The Doors and the story explores the urban legend that his bandmate Jim Morrison is still alive, having staged his death in 1971. He soon contacts Manzarek from his hiding place in the Seychelles Islands to embark on one final journey of rock 'n' roll rebellion.
Sullivan, "Chillerama" producer Gavin Heffernan and New Mexico poet-author Liz Sullivan co-wrote the script. Sullivan, Heffernan, Brian McCulley, John Crockett, Adam Robitel and Paul Ward will all produce.
Manzarek will produce and score the project and may cameo but will not portray himself in the film. Shooting will kick off next year.

Almost everyone knows a song or two from ’60s psychedelic rock group The Doors, be it “The End,” “Light My Fire,” “Hello, I Love You,” or some other great tune. It’s also entirely possible that you’ve seen Oliver Stone‘s The Doors, a controversial biopic of lead singer Jim Morrison — portrayed there by Val Kilmer in one of his best performances. Many of Morrison‘s friends and family members have often chastised the film for what they feel is the portrayal of a selfish, drug-addled disaster, which they’ve argued as being inaccurate.
With erroneous depictions being a sticking point, it should be interesting to see how they react to The Poet in Exile, a recently-announced adaptation of a novel by Ray Manzarek, who just so happens to be the former Doors keyboardist. His novel presents the popular theory that Morrison faked his own death, then expands upon...

This morning , we brought your attention to Hellions , a new film in development from director Gavin Heffernan, executive producer Tim Sullivan and Paul Lenart of Storyteller Pictures. A new slice of concept art - by Adam Bolt - has floated our way along with this description. Knock-knock, here comes Hellions. Home alone on Halloween, a 17-year-old girl must survive a night from hell when three malevolent trick-or-treaters come knocking. Described as an eighties-horror throwback with the edgy thematic of Juno and the intensity of The Strangers, Hellions .will boldly push the limits of the genre while blending the pain of adolescent growth and the mayhem of monster-horror.

This past Wednesday, March 16, Dread hit the set of filmmaker Paul Ward’s horror flick One for the Road for an exclusive look at the project, which at the time was shooting in the cold environs of Crestline, California.

Nestled within the mammoth Maryland Film Festival, which runs May 6-9 in Baltimore, is a collection of avant-garde short films that will screen twice during the fest in a single block. The program will run for 79 minutes and will include 11 shorts.
A full listing of the short films in the avant-garde block is below, but I want to spotlight two in particular. The first is Michael Robinson’s Locking Gazes, described by the filmmaker as the “faded memory figment of someone never born.” You can watch some absolutely gorgeous clips from the film on Robinson’s Vimeo page. This seems like it’d be a sweet meditation up on the big screen.
