‘The Amityville Murders’ – A Ghoulish and Exploitative Look at the DeFeo Murders [The Amityville IP]
Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”
There’s something frustrating about a film that begins with a lot of potential, and then thoroughly squanders it.
Writer/director Daniel Farrands’ The Amityville Murders is one such film. It’s one of the few “true” entries from the last dozen or so films, in that it actually tackles the Amityville story by focusing on the true crime murders of the DeFeo family. It’s well-shot, looks good, has mostly decent (albeit broad) performances.
These are all things that many of the IP cash-grab entries have been lacking.
Unfortunately it’s also incredibly sensational, relies too heavily on repetitive supernatural elements, and – most egregiously – features a distasteful ending that highlights Farrands’ unfortunate tendency to exploit real life tragedy for cash.
If the name sounds familiar,...

Initiating society’s collective loss of innocence and the fracturing of the nuclear American family is a powerful conflict that compellingly drives many intense dramatic films. The horror genre, in particular, has thrived on that influential struggle for decades, as can easily be seen in the classic franchise, ‘The Amityville Horror.’ The series began in 1979 […]

There’s a reason that this particular story keeps getting told over and over again. A family, seemingly perfect, that up and butchers themselves? Yeah, that’s fascinating. Whether it’s because of demonic forces or (more likely) just your garden variety insanity, there’s something there that makes for potentially strong horror filmmaking. Alas, that’s rarely the case, and this week’s new offering, The Amityville Murders, does nothing to reverse the trend. It avoids being outwardly terrible, but still ends up bland, unremarkable, and among the least interesting releases of 2019 so far. The movie is an origin story, telling the tale of the first killings that inspired this urban legend. As the official plot synopsis states: “On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took a high-powered rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed that “voices” in the house commanded him to kill.

As horror fans (might or might not) know, you can’t welcome the dawning of a new year without another direct-to-vod Amityville horror story. Did you see the one about an Amityville dollhouse? Amityville theater? Amityville mantle clock. Hungry franchise filmmakers have long woven their individual threads into Long Island’s haunted history, but Daniel Farrands’ The Amityville Murders eyes a return to “factuality.” Based on the true story of Ronnie DeFeo, this is the crime that started it all.
Thank Paimon. An Amityville movie that’s finally based on actual events. Too bad it’s exhaustingly inferior to most canon or non-canon Amityville flicks – a sheepish drag that steals from Paranormal Activity around every ominous corner.
Farrands transports viewers to the three-week period where Ronald “Butch” DeFeo Jr. (John Robinson) becomes possessed by voices (according to testimonial), walls himself from reality, and eventually murders his family on November 13th,...

All of the films that have been made about the infamous Amityville house have focused on the creepy horrific ghost stories that surround it after the murders that took place there. This new film, The Amityville Murders, will focus on the story of the family that was murdered in the house prior to the hauntings.
On the night of November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took a high-powered rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed that “voices” in the house commanded him to kill. This is their story.
The prequel to the haunting of the Amityville home comes from writer and director Daniel Farrand, who has directed several horror-inspired documentaries, such as Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th, Scream: The Inside Story, Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, The Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited, The Fear Is Real: Reinvestigating the Haunting...

The Amityville franchise has brought us a whopping 18 installments to date. Inspired by the critical and financial success of 1979’s The Amityville Horror (which still stands as one of the most commercially successful independent movies ever produced), we’ve been seeing various, remakes and reboots for decades now, but none of them have been able to reach the same level as the original.
The most recent effort was the dreadful Amityville: The Awakening – you can read our review here – and though it was a pretty dull and uninspired watch, the series will soldier on next year with The Amityville Murders. Like its predecessor, it doesn’t look like it’ll be able to return this once bankable franchise to its former glory, but fans of the series will no doubt be keen to check it out and to drum up some excitement, we’ve now got a new poster to feast on.

"What've we done!?" "We awakened them." Skyline has released a new official trailer for the horror prequel The Amityville Murders, written and directed by filmmaker Daniel Ferrands. This is yet another horror movie in the never-ending Amityville series, and it looks just as forgettable as most of the other films. Did Amityville: The Awakening ever get released? It was shelved for years and never even saw the light of day. Anyway. This one takes us back to the beginning. On the night of November 13th, 1974, Ronald DeFeo, Jr. took his rifle and murdered his entire family as they slept. At his trial, DeFeo claimed "voices" in the house told him to kill. The Amityville haunting has been the subject of an endless parade of films dating back to 1979’s The Amityville Horror, but what’s less common to see is a whole movie dedicated to the tragedy that preceded this alleged case of paranormal activity. That’s where The Amityville Murders comes in, with the film set to offer a fictionalized account of the events leading up to the night Ronald DeFeo, Jr. murdered his family with a high-powered rifle – a crime he later claimed to have committed after hearing voices in the house plotting against him.
The feature will be released by Skyline Entertainment, who’ve just shared a new photo from the movie, in which John Robinson (Elephant) can be seen brandishing his gun in the role of DeFeo. The unveiling came with a statement from Skyline CEO Jim Jacobsen, who praised writer-director Daniel Farrands for his work:

They knew it would take steely resolve and iron daring to go up against the violent sect who have brainwashed their teenage son, Justin. However the idea of a cult going to such lengths to retrieve a lost member basically seems like a throwaway storyline: an excuse for the “bad men” to attack our protagonists,...

Ahead of its September 1st release, Jackals is teased in a trailer that channels the visceral violence and isolated horror of Bryan Bertino's The Strangers and Jack Ketchum's Off Season.

Sports in films have been a cultural celebration, predating Leni Riefenstahl’s Olympia also owing its linage to Thomas Edison’s early experiments in motion. Crooked Arrows uses lacrosse as half an entrance into something more interesting: a portrait of an upstate New York tribe. The film falters where other sports movies have: growing too sentimental and a tad cheesy for its own good. Ruthless like Goon, it is not – structurally it suffers from the same good intentions of contemporary Christian based filmmaking.
Joe Logan (Brandon Routh) is a former lacrosse star and half-blood he runs the business affairs of a small reservation casino, seeking to expand at the hands of Mr. Geyer (Tom Kemp), a developer who is, above all things, all about the Benjamin’s. In exchange for transferring additional tribal land to the private corporation, Joe, a tribal liaison that drives an Audi convertible and sharp suites,...
