Exclusive: The L.A.-based Screamfest Horror Film Festival has unveiled the first wave lineup for its 24th edition, taking place at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood from October 8-17.

Among the films to look out for at this year’s festival are two produced for Hulu by WorthenBrooks (formerly 20th Digital Studio), on which we were first to report: Screamfest alum Brandon Espy’s Mr. Crocket and Justin Harding’s Carved, both of which will premiere on Hulu later this year.

A supernatural horror film starring Jerrika Hinton and Elvis Nolasco, Mr. Crocket follows Summer Beverly (Hinton) as she embarks on a chilling journey to rescue her son from a sinister children’s show host with otherworldly powers. Starring Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Carved is a fun romp centered on a group of survivors trapped in a Halloween village battle with a sentient, vengeful pumpkin.

Exclusive: Jennifer Love Hewitt (9-1-1) is starring in, directing and executive producing Lifetime’s The Holiday Junkie (wt). The film, inspired by Hewitt’s personal relationship with the holiday and the loss of her mother, is positioned as a tentpole of the network’s 2024 It’s a Wonderful Lifetime movie slate.

This marks Hewitt’s return to Lifetime. She headlined and produced the hit 2010 original movie The Client List. Its success spawned a TV series, also starring and executive produced by Hewitt, which ran for two seasons.

The Holiday Junkie (wt) will be a family affair, with Hewitt’s husband, Brian Hallisay, co-starring and their children will also appearing in the film.

It follows the decorating and planning service company run by Andie (Hewitt) and her mother Mimi. After Mimi passes away, Andie is forced to face her first Christmas without her mother and carry The Holiday Junkie torch on her own.

The Tribeca Film Festival 2024, presented by Okx, is back this week with tons of new genre premieres, retrospectives, and events to get excited about. This year’s Festival, which takes place June 5-16 in New York City showcases the best emerging talent from across the globe alongside established names.

Horror fans can look forward to buzzy titles like The Devil’s Bath, from filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. But the horror extends beyond the Midnight section, including the premiere of Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead. Look for the festival to give special presentations of Alfred Hitchcock and Tod Browning classics, too.

Finally, if you’re a Godzilla fan, don’t miss the epic bash the fest is throwing for the classic film’s 70th anniversary.

Lionsgate is set to release “The Fight Before Christmas,” a holiday comedy featuring “My Best Friend’s Wedding” star Dermot Mulroney and “The Goldbergs” actor Hayley Orrantia.

Lionsgate is partnering with MarVista Entertainment and Particular Crowd on the film, which will come out in the fourth quarter of this year.

“The Fight Before Christmas” recently wrapped production in Chicago and co-stars Janel Parrish of Netflix’s “To All the Boys” franchise and “Pretty Little Liars.”

Described as a “mischievous tale,” the story follows 29-year-old Emma (Orrantia), whose 54-year-old father (Mulroney) begins dating her high school frenemy (Parrish) soon after his wife passes away. Emma embarks on a mission to break up the happy couple after her dad insists they spend the holidays together.

“The Miseducation of Bindu” filmmaker Prarthana Mohan is directing “The Fight Before Christmas,” with Sara Endsley (“The Young and the Restless”) on board to write the screenplay.

Ashley Judd is set to star in the upcoming YA drama “#Fbf,” a movie that takes place almost entirely on smartphones and computer screens.

The format, initially seen in films like “Searching” with John Cho, allowed the actors to be filmed in their homes in Los Angeles, Nashville, Anaheim, New York and other remote locations amid the pandemic.

“#Fbf” follows teenager Annie (Cree Cicchino), who accidentally takes her mom’s (Judd) laptop instead of her own to visit her father in New Jersey. Annie soon realizes the laptop is everything she needs to pose as her mom for the day, repair her parents’ marriage and encourage them to move back from Florida.

Ilyssa Goodman (“A Cinderella Story”) is directing the film from a screenplay that she wrote with Ashley Peter (“The Morning Show”).

Namir Smallwood and Sidney Flanigan will star in “Rounding,” a new dramatic thriller from “Saint Frances” director Alex Thompson. “Rounding” follows a driven young medical resident (Smallwood) who transfers to a rural hospital for a fresh start. There, the demons of his past start to catch up to him when he becomes consumed by the case of a young asthma patient (Flanigan). The film was shot in secret in Chicago and just wrapped production.

Smallwood is an ensemble member at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. He has also appeared in the television shows “Rust” and “Chicago Fire.” This is his feature film debut. Flanigan had critics raving with her work in “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” a drama about a young woman’s efforts to obtain an abortion. She was nominated for an Independent Spirit nomination for best female lead and won prizes from the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Circle.

Maskell’s feature directorial debut is a darkly comic thriller.

Jenna Coleman and Tom Burke will lead the cast of Klokkenluider, the feature directorial debut of actor Neil Maskell, which will start its three-week shoot on February 28 in East Sussex in southern England.

The film is written by Maskell, produced by Helen Simmons and Stephanie Aspin of UK production company Erebus Pictures, and executive produced by Ben Wheatley and Andy Starke at Rook Films. John Jencks is an executive producer, and Savannah Power is a co-producer.

IFC Midnight announced that they have acquired North American rights to Hunter Hunter, starring Devon Sawa, Camille Sullivan, Summer Howell, and Nick Stahl, with plans to release the film this December:

Exclusive: IFC Films’ genre label IFC Midnight has acquired North American rights to Hunter Hunter, the thriller written and directed by Shawn Linden that stars Devon Sawa and Nick Stahl. IFC, which saw success during the lockdown with Dave Franco’s The Rental, Relic and The Wretched, will release it December 18 in theaters and on demand.

The film centers on a family living in the remote wilderness as fur trappers. Joseph Mersault (Sawa), his wife Anne (Camille Sullivan) and their daughter Renée (Summer H. Howell) think their traps are being hunted by the return of a rogue wolf and Joseph leaves them behind to track it. Hannah Pillemer, who has spearheaded the company’s indie film slate is now adding network television and digital content to her responsibilities in the elevated role of Head of Creative Affairs. Years ago I wrote a script called Prodigal Son – it was set up at Beacon Pictures with Twisted Films producing. Ultimately, the deal fell through but that put me on the Saw radar. It was my work on that franchise that led to work on IS2.

So it’s that time of year again. October. The trees are changing, the sky is darkening and Halloween is just around the corner. It seems only fitting then, that horror movies are released in large volume and horror fans around the world are wetting their gills with what is on offer.

I Spit On Your Grave 2 will get its world premiere at Frightfest 2013 in London.

A "very special festival cut" overseen by producers will feature at the Empire in Leicester Square on Sunday, August 25.

I Spit On Your Grave 2 features Jemma Dallender, who has appeared in Hollyoaks and Community. The film is a sequel to the 2010 movie starring Sarah Butler, itself a remake of the controversial 1978 original starring Camille Keaton.

Dallender is joined in the cast by Joe Absolom (EastEnders, Long Time Dead) and Mary Stockley.

Steven R Monroe returns as director, and Neil Elman returns as a co-writer, alongside Saw IV's Thomas Fenton.

After its London premiere, the movie will get a cinema release before coming to DVD and Blu-ray on October 7.

There’s a lot going on in Mongolian Death Worm, the underachieving Syfy original movie directed by Steven R. Monroe. Is it the story of a self-described "scoundrel" hunting for treasure? Or is it the tale of a dedicated doctor trying to save a village from pestilence? We now have a new favorite title for a Syfy original movie: Mongolian Death Worms! But bear in mind that they didn’t make up that moniker; it seems the Mongolian Death Worm is a cryptozoological species that has been reported and investigated for decades now, which makes it a surprise that Syfy didn’t catch up with it sooner.

The Worm supposedly ranges from 2 to 5 feet long and lives under the sands of the Gobi desert, from which it emerges to kill its prey via either spitting caustic acid or launching electrical shocks. As for its movie incarnation, Mongolian Death Worms recently lensed in Dallas, TX for Ogre and Wyvern director Steven R. Monroe, who scripted with Sea Beast’s Neil Elman.
