Mandarin Motion Pictures to launch sales at the American Film Market (AFM).

Hong Kong’s Mandarin Motion Pictures has secured sales rights to Jackie Chan action comedy Panda Plan and will launch the film at the American Film Market (AFM).

Zhang Luan directs the Chinese feature, in which a baby panda with just one dark circle around his eye becomes a worldwide sensation after being born at China’s Noah Zoo. When a Middle Eastern tycoon dispatches mercenaries to snatch baby pandas from the zoo, iconic action star Chan – playing a version of himself – becomes involved to protect the animals at the wildlife park.

Fresh from his horse wrangler film Ride On, Jackie Chan has lined up an action comedy flick centering on baby pandas. The 69-year-old screen icon is set to star in Panda Plan, directed by mainland Chinese filmmaker Zhang Luan (Song of Youth, Give Me Five) and produced by Mandarin Motion Pictures and Wishart Media Co.

The project was announced on the last day of Tokyo’s Tiffcom content market and will make its sales debut at the American Film Market in Los Angeles next week.

The film centers on a rare baby panda with a dark circle around just one eye, who becomes a worldwide sensation when he’s born at China’s Noah Zoo. But when a Middle Eastern tycoon dispatches international mercenaries to kidnap the zoo’s baby pandas, Chan, playing a version of himself as an international action star, is forced to get involved in a rescue mission.

Hu Tienan (Chang Yuan) is a powerful and arrogant man but when he steps into an elevator he is somehow transported into a “misplaced” world. In this world, everyone’s positions have changed and Hu is now a submissive househusband. What was once a gathering with his drinking buddies has now turned into a beauty competition during afternoon tea. Hu really cannot bear the changes to his life and yet there will come a day when he will eventually learn to empathise with his wife, appreciate her silent dedication and learn the true meaning of “love”. Co-written and directed by Zhang Qi (Who Sleeps My Bro), this gender role reversal comedy premieres in China on December 31, 2022. The cast includes Jackie Li, Wei Xiang, Wang Chengsi, Guo Xiangpeng, and Wang Ning.

China recorded an unchanged top five films and its weakest box office weekend since Chinese New Year. Nationwide gross box office was just 18.6 million.

The film is the story of a young man who is helping his father rediscover his lost memories. As he does so, he is transported back in time and accidentally alters his parent’s pasts. That means he must reunite the pair or risk never being born. It stars Ma Li Chang Yuan and Wei Xiang and is directed by Zhang Luan.

The film was released a week ago in time for the mid-autumn festival and scored 21.3 million in its opening weekend, according to data from consultancy Artisan Gateway. But without the holiday boost, the film slumped by 65. It now has a cumulative of 36.5 million after ten days of a release handled by Wanda Pictures.
