Image
When Will Reeve was on his way from New York City to Cleveland to film his cameo in James Gunn’s “Superman,” he says his late father, the original big screen Man of Steel Christopher Reeve, may have sent him a sign from the heavens.

“I think my flight got a little delayed, so I don’t know what that means,” Will Reeve cracked Monday on the red carpet at the movie’s premiere at Hollywood’s Tcl Chinese Theatre.

But then he added, “I think I am very deliberate about living my own life, making my own decisions, knowing that if I make the right decision, it will honor my parents, and I think that it was the right decision to do this in a way, to honor my parents.”

Reeve, an ABC News correspondent, makes a cameo in “Superman” as a reporter. “My family, they’re like, ‘That’s super cool.

Lois’ questions lead to Superman insisting he didn’t illegally enter a country but instead stopped a war and saved countless lives. David Corenswet stars as Superman / Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion is Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Isabela Merced is Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl, and Skyler Gisondo plays Jimmy Olsen. Superman Leaked Footage Reveals New Look At The Engineer And Ultraman; James Gunn Talks Post-Credits Plans
Image
The first teaser trailer for Superman has dominated the news cycle today but we're not finished yet. The sneak peek is currently playing in theaters before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and includes scenes not featured in the version released online.

Among them is an imposing shot of Mister Terrific and another showing Lex Luthor (wearing sunglasses) flanked by Ultraman and The Engineer. The latter two characters made a blink-and-you'd-miss-it appearance in the online trailer so we're hoping to get a clearer shot of them soon.

While the Superman trailer isn't playing in front of a major new Warner Bros. title, this is a fun reward for fans who head to their local multiplexes this weekend.

It's also easy to imagine it being something DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn pushed for; after all, there may be other variants of the teaser out there!

At the recent press event for Superman, Gunn...

‘Superman’ First Teaser Trailer Introduces David Corenswet as the Man of Steel
Image
A lot is riding on Superman‘s success so the teaser trailer needs to land well with fans. Based on comments on DC’s YouTube page, it seems to have hit most of the right notes.

The teaser trailer opens with Superman gasping for breath, bloody and calling for help from his trusty dog Krypto. The two-minute trailer has only a couple of lines of dialogue and instead teases us with very brief snippets of all the key characters.

David Corenswet (Twisters) stars as Superman/Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) plays Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult (Nosferatu) is Lex Luthor. Edi Gathegi (For All Mankind) plays Mr. Terrific, Isabela Merced (Alien Romulus) is Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) is Guy Gardner / Green Lantern, Skyler Gisondo (Licorice Pizza) is Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio (At Midnight) is Eve Teschmacher, María Gabriela de Faría (The Moodys) is Angela Spica / The Engineer,...

Superman 4K Stills Reveal First Look At Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, Mister Terrific, And More
Image
The first Superman trailer was released earlier today and we now have some 4K screenshots so you can take a closer look at all the biggest moments.

The biggest talking point has to be our first proper look at Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and Metamorpho. Krypto also gets his fair share of the spotlight, as do characters like Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Pa Kent.

Crucially, we have some terrific shots of the Man of Tomorrow himself; that costume looks like it's been pulled straight from the pages of the comic books and is far more enjoyable to look at here than it was in set photos or even Superman's first-look image.

"The thing that connects him so much to Christopher Reeve is, he has a lot of deep training," filmmaker James Gunn said of David Corenswet at a Q&a earlier this week. "Like, I’ve...

What did you think of the Superman trailer? Take our poll!
James Gunn
The time has finally come to see what James Gunn‘s new Dcu Superman will bring us. The trailer has recently dropped during a Q&a launch event and emotions are already running high with the new version of John Williams’ Superman theme, to the adorable Krypto being a good dog and getting Kal-El to safety, to a somber Superman facing a hostile crowd while mourning something currently nondescript. So, let’s hear from You now! What did you think of the new trailer? Take our poll below and let us know!

Superman Trailer Will Make You Believe A Man Can Fly As We Meet New Heroes, Villains, And Krypto!
Image
It's hard to remember the last time there was a trailer as highly anticipated as our first look at DC Studios and James Gunn's Superman. Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home come to mind, of course, but today isn't about the MCU; it's the Dcu's time to shine.

The teaser is packed full of major reveals, though the fact it kicks off with a beaten and bloodied Man of Steel is bound to be a major talking point. Fortunately, Krypto arrives to save the day before we catch sight of several other key characters.

Among them are Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Hawgirl, Metamorpho (at last!), and Mister Terrific. Nicholas Hoult, meanwhile, looks suitably formidable and threatening as Lex Luthor, while the mysterious glowing orb from the first-look image also makes its return here.

There's time for romance too as Clark Kent and Lois Lane (and Superman and Lois) are shown getting close,...

Superman Star Wendell Pierce Reveals His Perry White Look Ahead Of Today's Long-Awaited Trailer Debut
Image
The Wire and Jack Ryan star Wendell Pierce will play the Dcu's Perry White in Superman. While he has been spotted from afar in set photos, the actor just hyped up today's trailer with a new look at his cigar-chomping Daily Planet Editor-in-Chief.

We don't know what to expect from this version of Perry but on the page, he's a key supporting character in Clark Kent's world.

Pierce hasn't said much about his Superman role but, earlier this year, expressed his excitement about joining the franchise. "I did not know how big it was. I really did not know...the announcement was bigger than the story. That was a pleasant surprise," he admitted. "It's humbling, and I'm looking forward to it."

Many actors have played Perry White on screen, starting with Pierre Watkin in Columbia Pictures' popular Superman serials in the 1940s. John Hamilton, Lane Smith, Michael McKean, Jackie Cooper,...

Superman Trailer Teaser Screenshots Offer Closer Look Inside The Daily Planet, Luthor Corp Tease, And More
Image
The first Superman teaser trailer is very nearly upon us and it's hard to remember a more highly anticipated sneak peek than this one (at least since Spider-Man: No Way Home dropped its memorable first look in 2021).

We'll be doing a full breakdown of tomorrow's trailer after it premieres but, in the meantime, we figured you might want to take a closer look at the handful of reveals featured in this preview.

Below, you'll find some 4K screenshots from the Superman trailer teaser along with our thoughts on what DC Studios has chosen to reveal. For example, did you spot that blink-and-you'd-miss-it Luthor Corp mention?

We hate to kick things off by comparing the Dceu to the Dcu but what an upgrade for The Daily Planet. It's gone from being a nondescript skyscraper with the words "Daily Planet" written...

Superman Trailer Teaser Reveals First Footage From The Movie As The World Is Told To "Look Up"
Image
With less than 24 hours to go until the first Superman teaser trailer is released, Warner Bros. and DC Studios have just dropped a 30-second trailer teaser (it's been a while since we've had one of these to build up hype).

While it stops short of a full Superman reveal, we do see the Man of Tomorrow taking flight. The focus is primarily on the citizens of Metropolis looking to the skies, a nod it seems to the movie's "Look Up" tagline.

Elsewhere, we see the classic Daily Planet globe atop the skyscraper that the newspaper calls home and a glimpse at characters like Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant, Ron Troupe, and Steve Lombard.

In related news, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) has classified tomorrow's Superman trailer, confirming it will run for a total of 2 minutes, and 20 seconds. That points to it being a proper look at what's...

Superman: First Details About Thursday's "Emotional," "[Music]-Focused" First Trailer Revealed
Image
The Superman trailer was shown to select members of the press yesterday and, while we'd imagine their thoughts are under strict embargo until Thursday, that hasn't stopped a few details leaking out in advance.

Reliable trailer release date and runtime leaker @Cryptic4KQual has shared a few minor, spoiler-free pieces of intel, explaining that the sneak peek "doesn't have much dialogue" and will be "more [music] focused."

They add that the Superman trailer will also include "some brief important appearances" before suggesting we'll hear an electric guitar version of the Man of Tomorrow's classic theme.

The scooper's final analysis is that it, "Seems to be a very emotional trailer with some heartwarming scenes."

There's not much to go on but it sounds like we're getting a decent look at what's to come in Superman rather than a teaser many feared might revolve primarily around Krypto (the fan-favourite alien dog does have...

Superman Composer John Murphy Shares 30-Second "Theme From Superman" Ahead Of Trailer Release
Image
Yesterday, Warner Bros. and DC Studios shared the first poster for Superman. The movie will serve as the true launching platform for the new Dcu after Max's Creature Commandos, and excitement for Thursday's trailer is rapidly rising.

In the motion poster shared on social media yesterday, we heard what appeared to be composer John Murphy's score for the reboot. Taking its cues from John Williams' work in Superman: The Movie and, to a lesser extent, Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel theme, it's received a positive response from fans.

Today, Murphy has posted a 30-second clip on YouTube in a video he's named "Theme From Superman." We don't know if this is the Man of Tomorrow's main theme, but it seems to be at least part of it (we'd imagine a full "reveal" is being saved for the trailer).

"Happy to announce that my frequent collaborator [John Murphy] is scoring [tt5950044 autoSuperman...

Turning Francis Ford Coppola’s Metaphoric Vision of ‘Megalopolis’ Into New Rome and the Titular Utopia
Image
Midway through shooting the massive, futuristic “Megalopolis,” Francis Ford Coppola knew it wasn’t working. In the production notes, he recounts how the art department (led by production designer Beth Mickle) wasn’t in sync with his abstract vision wrapped around the deteriorating New Rome and the utopian Megalopolis. The concept of conveying “woven material or tapestry” just wasn’t getting through.

So Coppola started communicating his bold visual ideas to concept designer Dean Sherriff through stick-figure sketches. Before the 2022 holidays, he demanded that the art department trim its leadership to perform more efficiently out of budgetary necessity. They refused and quit in protest. Meanwhile, the VFX team was disbanded as well.

Enter production designer Bradley Rubin after the New Year’s break. He was tasked with completing the film in collaboration with a whole new VFX team. Yet he quickly adapted to the theatricality of it all and the...

'There Was Disagreement': Francis Ford Coppola Explains Firing Megalopolis' VFX Team
Image
The trailers for Megalopolis tease Francis Ford Coppola's ambitious story and creative direction. Anticipation for the film builds despite recent controversies, which include irreconcilable differences with the VFX team.

Francis Ford Coppola confirmed that creative differences and budget constraints contributed to his decision to fire the Megalopolis VFX team. Impressed by their work on 2019's Motherless Brooklyn, Coppola hired the team (led by production designer Beth Mickle) for their impressive portfolio and period-accurate production design. "I liked the way they handled Motherless Brooklyn," he told Empire (via Screen Rant). "It seemed to span time. The production designer had a dual career where she did independent films but also did big Marvel pictures." Mickle's previous work includes Drive, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Suicide Squad. "Megalopolis had a big art-department need because you have to show the world of the future," Coppola explained.

Francis Ford Coppola Addresses Firing Megalopolis Entire VFX Team
Image
Megalopolis director Francis Ford Coppola explains why the film's entire VFX team was fired. This is only one of many controversies surrounding Megalopolis, including allegations against Coppola for harassing extras on the set of the film. A Megalopolis trailer led to further controversy as the trailer featured quotes that appeared to be from reviews of previous Coppola films, only for the quotes to later be revealed as fabricated, leading to Lionsgate apologizing and pulling the trailer.

While speaking with Empire magazine, Coppola clarified that the VFX team was fired due to creative differences and an inability to reach a satisfying compromise. Coppola highlights why this team was initially an ideal fit for Megalopolis while also breaking down the conflict that arose as production continued. Part of the challenges that he faced are rooted in not only being the film's director, but also being the one to finance the film. Check...

Francis Ford Coppola Comments On Those Controversial Megalopolis Crew Exits
Image
By now, the mythology surrounding Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" is perhaps larger than the perplexing film itself. The ambitious sci-fi tale has been decades in the making, and with stories of money troubles, set dysfunction, AI-generated pull quotes, and alleged sexual misconduct behind the scenes, "Megalopolis" has made the news for all the wrong reasons. Now, ahead of the film's North American debut (it's set to screen at the Toronto Film Festival after premiering at Cannes earlier this year), Coppola is sharing his own two cents. The director refutes claims that the movie's production was off the rails by describing, well, a production that sounds like it went off the rails.

For the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Coppola was asked to explain what went down between himself and the film's art and visual effects departments. In early 2023, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Coppola had fired most...

Francis Ford Coppola Addresses Allegations of Inappropriate Behavior on ‘Megalopolis’ Set: ‘I’m Not Touchy-Feely’
Image
Francis Ford Coppola has addressed the allegations that he made advances with actresses on the set of “Megalopolis.”

In a report last month by The Guardian, multiple anonymous crew members said Coppola behaved inappropriately amid production. Now, during an hour-long interview Coppola gave to Manohla Dargis of the The New York Times during the Cannes Film Festival, the filmmaker denied the allegations in a roundabout way. In part, Coppola pointed to how he was raised and the morals he learned from his mother, Italia Coppola.

“My mother told me that if you make an advance toward a woman, it means you disrespect her, and the girls I had crushes on, I certainly didn’t disrespect them,” Coppola said.

As the New York Times wrote, “Pressed further, he added that there was a photo of one of the ‘girls’ he kissed on the cheek that had been taken by her father.

‘Megalopolis’ First Reactions Boast That Francis Ford Coppola’s Epic Transcends Genre: ‘It’s the Craziest Thing I’ve Ever Seen’
Image
Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” just may have broken the internet — and the brains of more than a few critics at Cannes.

Upon the film’s world premiere, fans and critics alike took to social media to capture the “insanity” of Coppola’s latest feature, which has been described by the auteur as a “Roman epic.” Count IndieWire’s David Ehrlich as a fan: In his review, he said that “Coppola’s wild and delirious fever dream inspires new hope for the future of movies.” The film debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and is still looking for distribution, but will definitely get an IMAX release regardless.

Adam Driver leads the feature as a pseudo alter ego of writer/director Coppola, with the Oscar-nominated actor playing an architect who envisions saving his corrupt city and transforming the metropolis into a utopia. Meanwhile, the city’s mayor (Giancarlo Esposito) clashes with Driver’s character,...

Adam Driver's New Sci-Fi Movie Controversy Is Like 1971 All Over Again
Image
Coppola's upcoming sci-fi film Megalopolis faces on-set chaos similar to his troubled 1970s works. The director's longstanding struggle to bring Megalopolis to life involves self-financing and on-set drama. Reports of chaos on the Megalopolis set may mirror Coppola's iconic works like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.

While Francis Ford Coppola's upcoming Megalopolis is set to be the next big deal in science fiction, the multiple reports of on-set issues put the auteur's new movie in a similar spot as his body of work from the 1970s. Although nothing is confirmed, reports of on-set chaos during Megalopolis' production, such as key staff quitting, have contributed to the overall concerns regarding the quality of the filmmaker's passion project. Coppola financed most of Megalopolis himself, and with him reportedly having to spend even more money to replace those who quit, the upcoming movie has to be a commercial success.

Furthermore, Coppola has...

The Rocket Fuel of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Visual Effects
Image
Director James Gunn brought a new level of emotional power to “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” by making the wisecracking Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and his tragic backstory the centerpiece of the finale. This required the Oscar-nominated VFX (led by Marvel’s production VFX supervisor Stéphane Ceretti) to up its game considerably to meet the demands of Gunn’s intimate scale and epic scope.

Framestore (led by VFX supervisor Alexis Wajsbrot) was tasked with expanding and improving its keyframe animation of Rocket through six stages, from genetically altered baby raccoon to hardened weapons expert. This allowed for greater nuance and complexity in the facial performance along with more detailed fur and an evolved gait and physiology. “It’s really a chain of artists that work together and get that to the level where other humans looking at it are crying because of a CG raccoon,” Ceretti told IndieWire in the video below.

Why Casting Isn't James Gunn's Top Priority For Superman: Legacy
Image
Casting superhero characters is important, but at the same time, it's not important. During the '80s and '90s, audiences felt a certain thrill knowing that certain outsize movie stars would be playing Batman villains. Indeed, Jack Nicholson received top billing on Tim Burton's "Batman," and audiences were more keen to see an actor of such stature hamming it up as a murderous gangster clown. The same could be said of Danny DeVito as the Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Jim Carrey as the Riddler, or Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Casting, in those cases, was more important than the character.

In the era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, that changed. The characters became more important than the casting. Audiences were drawn to MCU movies because they wanted to see Captain America, not because they were dying to see Chris Evans' interpretation of Captain America. Any number...

‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Poor Things,’ ‘Saltburn’ Collect Art Directors Guild Awards
Image
Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.

Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.

Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. A year ago, eventual Oscar winner All Quiet on the Western Front was nominated in the period...

Art Directors Guild 2024 Winners Include ‘Poor Things,’ ‘Oppenheimer,’ and ‘Beef’
Image
Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.

Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Poor Things’ Take Top Honors at Art Directors Guild Awards
Image
“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.

Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.

“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.

In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

Art Directors Guild Awards: Look for Oscar winner for Best Production Design among nominees
Image
On January 9, the Art Directors Guild announced the nominees for its 28th annual awards, which will be handed out on February 10. These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the Academy Awards. Over the first 27 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.

“Barbie” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. It reaped a bid in the fantasy film genre with the Adg as did its strongest Oscar rival, “Poor Things.” Two of the other three likeliest Oscar nominees — “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Oppenheimer” — contend in the period picture category. Our fifth pick, “The Color Purple,” was snubbed in that race, which is rounded out by “Asteroid City,” “Maestro” and “Napoleon.”

The other fantasy film nominees are: “The Creator,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Wonka.”
