Kristen Welker wants to “Meet The Press” with something new.
So the new Sunday-show moderator is introducing a different sort of recurring segment to NBC’s venerable public affairs program. “Meet The Moment” will feature conversations with influentials from outside the usual Beltway haunts, who will still weigh in on issues of importance to voters and the long-running show’s overall audience. Among those who have appeared: Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, who discussed Black maternal health; actor Selma Blair, who has become an advocate for fair disability pay after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; author and The Atlantic staff writer Tim Alberta, who has scrutinized changes in the Evangelical church; and Iranian activist Masih Alinejad, who has pushed for women’s rights in Iran.
Some of these segments will run again this Sunday. More “Moments” are expected in 2024.

Shannon Bream first tried her hand at journalism at the age of 30 after having earned a law degree. Some of the people working with her called her “Grandma Intern.” They won’t be calling her that on Sunday.
Bream will this weekend kick off a new era on “Fox News Sunday,” the jewel of the news side at Fox News Channel, which often gets more attention for its opinion programming. She will be the programs’ first permanent female host and will be the first permanent replacement for Chris Wallace, who burnished his reputation for prosecutorial questioning of newsmakers and politicians over a tenure that lasted just under two decades. Wallace raised eyebrows in late 2021, when he announced on air he was leaving the show. He later disclosed he had jumped to CNN, where he is slated to host a new program for both HBO Max and CNN’s Sunday schedule.

Randy Wilkins connects with Derek Jeter, subject of his seven-part ESPN documentary series, The Captain, on a few levels.
For starters, Wilkins is a lifelong New York Yankees fan, and Jeter was the linchpin of five World Series championships captured by the team between 1996 and 2009. In his filmmaking career, Wilkins also can relate. While he wasn’t a teen-ager like Jeter when he got his big break, getting the chance to tell the story of his hero resulted from a surprise endorsement from Spike Lee, who is an executive producer of the series.
“In June 2020, he called me to check up on me,” Wilkins recalled in an interview. “He asked me who my favorite Yankee was, just out of the blue. I said, ‘Well, Derek Jeter.’ I was very confused as to why he was asking me that. And the next thing he said was, ‘Derek Jeter wants to do...

Randy Wilkins, who directed the upcoming Derek Jeter ESPN Films documentary series “The Captain,” had one word to describe the topic he had to drag out of the stoic Hall-of-Fame shortstop: “Alex.”
New York Yankees fans in attendance at the June 12 Tribeca Festival Q&a following the first episode’s premiere got a kick out of that one. Jeter, who sat calmly on the Bmcc Tribeca Performing Arts Center stage beside Wilkins, perhaps did not. Wilkins, of course, was referring to Alex Rodriguez, an all-time-great Major League Baseball infielder in his own right. Jeter and A-Rod famously did not get along after the Yankees signed Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers star Rodriguez (whom many baseball pundits believed to be the superior shortstop).
Jeter held his literal ground on the left side of the infield: A-Rod switched positions to third base, and what had been an easy friendship forged at All-Star Games was never the same.

No surprise here ... but Roy Halladay has officially been placed on the ballot for the Baseball Hall of Fame ... 1 year after his tragic death in a plane crash off the Gulf of Mexico. Halladay's nomination was Not advanced due to his death -- he last pitched in 2013, satisfying the usual 5-year waiting period. Most experts agree Halladay is a 1st ballot lock -- since he was an 8-time All-Star and won 2 Cy Young Awards during his 15-year Mlb career.

Hollywood couldn't have written a better fairy-tale ending for Derek Jeter's last game in New York on Thursday night. When the beloved team captain went to bat at the bottom of the ninth against the Baltimore Orioles, the score was tied 5-5, with pinch runner Antoan Richardson on second base. Then Jeter hit a perfect single base to right field, giving Richardson the chance to run home and win the game. The crowd went crazy, and Jeter was embraced by his teammates before being greeted by fellow retired Yankees Mariano Rivera, Tino Martinez, Andy Pettitte and Jorge Posada, and his former manager Joe Torre.

Jimmy Dugan was full of spit: There is definitely crying in baseball.
At least there was last night in the Bronx, where the greatest relief pitcher in the history of the sport said goodbye to the home crowd after 19 seasons and five World Series championships. Mariano Rivera, who has confounded batters and shattered bats with his unhittable cut-fastball ever since 1995, took the mound in Yankee Stadium for the last time. It was hardly a typical Rivera outing — even though he retired four straight Tampa Bay hitters. For one, the Yankees, who failed to qualify for the playoffs this season, were trailing,...

Looks like the Yankees just caught another tough break.
Just hours after the club announced that strongman C.C. Sabathia is going on the disabled list with a groin strain (ha!), Andy Pettitte broke his ankle when he was smitten with a one-hop scorcher off the bat of Indians first baseman Casey Kotchman Wednesday afternoon. Pettitte is expected to be out for at least six weeks.
As terrible a blow as this is to the Yankees, fans of the Bronx Bombers should be thanking their lucky stars that the 40-year-old Pettitte didn't also fall and break a hip. Ha!
The badly timed injuries leaves the Yankees rotation once again in tatters. Ivan Nova has been great this year and Phil Hughes has been better lately, but no team, not even the Yankees, can afford to lose two quality left-handed starters at the same time. So say a prayer for the New York Yankees,...

Roger Clemens's day in court has been delayed. The former Major League Baseball pitcher's federal perjury trial came to an early end Thursday - only the second day of testimony - when U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton declared a mistrial. The jury was inadvertently allowed to hear statements from a U.S. congressman about the credibility of key witnesses in the case, including Clemens's former teammate Andy Pettitte. "We'll never know what impact that will have on how this jury decides this case, when we have a man's liberty's at stake," said Walton, according to the Los Angeles Times.

While the scene at the Nasdaq at Times Square Thursday night was the polar opposite of the geek circus this past weekend at the Javits Center, the one thing they both had in common was Stan Lee at center stage. The Stan Lee Foundation, a new literacy program recently launched by Stan and his business partners at Pow! Entertainment, used only the thinnest veil of superhero banter and trope to get the message out that they are serious—deadly serious—about solving illiteracy across the globe.
“The Stan Lee Foundation is a foundation with a message,” said the keynote speaker. “We want to make this a planet we can live with. That way we can, uh… live with the planet… Er, that’s what the foundation was founded for.”
Okay, I thought from the eighth row—somebody forgot his lines. Or never took an extemp course. He should’ve had...

George Steinbrenner, owner of the New York Yankees, died today of a heart attack. He was 80 years old. An icon of the sports world, Steinbrenner saw the Yanks win 11 pennants and 7 World Series. But it wasn't just about winning on the baseball diamond: Steinbrenner was also a shrewd businessman, whose dealings helped revive the struggling franchise financially. Here we present the five most noteworthy deals of Steinbrenner's career in chronological order.
1. New York Yankees. Steinbrenner along with a small group of investors purchased the ailing team from CBS in 1973 for an estimated $8.8 to $10 million. It's been reported that he only put up $168,000 of the original equity for the team purchase, but has since bought out the other limited partners. In his tenure as the head of the Pinstripes, the team won 7 World Series championships, are now the most valuable franchise in the Mlb, with an estimated worth of $1.6 billion.
2. Msg and Yes Network.

here are two ways the makers of male-oriented personal care and beauty products market their goods to consumers. First, there's the Axe Effect. It's the highly persuasive method of playing on average everyday man's insecurities about unbelievably attractive women, advertising unrealistic beauty ideals, copious amounts of skin and sex appeal, and the importance of getting a lot of action. Second, there's the Platonic Ideal of the American Male. He's a stand-up, down-to-earth, man with a rags to riches story, a work ethic the size of Paul Bunyan, a devotion to family with which the religious could find no fault, and happens to care a lot about skincare. Dove, a beauty brand that ostensibly fights against superficial stereotypes and campaigns for real beauty, does not employ the Axe Effect. In it's online ad campaign for the new Men+Care product line, Dove hopes to increase its market share among American males...

There was a lot of talk of a higher power on tonight's American Idol telecast. One contestant declared himself a "God-fearing person." Another vocalist talked about prayer as a pre-performance ritual. Heck, even Simon Cowell got into the (holy) spirit, accepting an invitation to attend church. But after listening to the 10 male semifinalists' performances, I'm beginning to fear that God has finally decided to forsake the nation's most popular televised singing competition now that its ninth season is providing direct, ratings-draining competition for the final season of ABC's Lost. [Spoilers ahead, west-coasters!] How else to explain the parade of bum notes sent forth...

"Let's hear it for New York, New York, New York!" Jay-z took hip-hop to the World Series earlier this month, and on Friday (November 6) he took it to the teams' World Series victory parade. Not only did Hov ride one of the floats with Yankee star Alex Rodriguez during the parade down the Canyon of Heroes, he closed out the ceremony at City Hall for the Bronx Bombers.
After giving out keys to the city to the entire Yankee organization — including team captain Derek Jeter — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a "special treat."
"His song has become one of the newest anthems of the Yankees," Bloomberg told the audience. "Please welcome a great Yankee fan and a great New Yorker: Jay-z.

Last night in the Bronx, the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 7-3, successfully closing out the 2009 World Series and clinching the team's 27th championship, the most of any professional sports team in history. Last night's game belonged to veteran Yankee ace Andy Pettitte (who pitched solidly on short rest) and to World Series Mvp Hideki Matsui, who tied a Series record with six Rbi. The victory is not nearly as poetic as some are making it out to be (after all, the Yanks last won a Series in 2000 — hardly the drought that the Boston Red Sox experienced), but it's an especially redemptive win for team manager Joe Girardi (who has been second-guessed for most of his tenure) and for slugger Alex Rodriguez, whose monster salary has long been in question because of his inability to win a championship. But all that has been washed...
