Say what you will about Donald Trump (actually, don’t), but his first term as president proved to be a boon to the comedy economy, launching a cluster of funny folks who specialized in skewering the 45th president. Now that he’s back for the sequel — and causing more mayhem than ever in Washington — The Hollywood Reporter checked back in with some of them to see how they’re adapting to Trump 2.0.

How are you adjusting to the new Trump administration?
Oh, there’s no adjusting. You can’t adjust to chaos. Because then you become the chaos. I’m trying to be the eye of the storm, but even that’s pretty nauseating. Avoiding the news if impossible. I’m scared to look and even more scared to look away. I was totally convinced this country would never re-elect him. I thought we...

The Office continues to influence popular culture, with a new Netflix movie referencing the iconic sitcom. Many cast members have found success post-The Office, including Andy Daly in a quirky new role. Despite mixed reviews, The Office's "Benjamin Franklin" episode still has its moments, like the memorable Pam and Karen confrontation.
Despite ending in 2013, The Office still manages to have a large impact on popular culture, with a divisive new Netflix comedy movie being the latest project to reference the series. Widely regarded as one of the best sitcoms of all time, The Office provided viewers with a wealth of memorable episodes and laugh-out-loud moments across its nine-season run. Now, a certain episode of the show from way back in 2007 has received an unexpected follow-up.

Jerry Seinfeld's movie Unfrosted is Number 1 on Netflix despite negative reviews from critics and audiences. The star-studded cast and unique premise likely contributed to its success. Seinfeld's influence and the film's intriguing subject matter have helped maintain its top spot, and could keep it in the Top 10.
Jerry Seinfeld's latest movie, Unfrosted, has taken the Number 1 spot on Netflix's global chart this week, despite the film scoring career-low reviews for the comedian. The Seinfeld directorial debut follows the story of Kellogg's creation of Pop-Tarts in the 1960s, featuring an ensemble cast of comedic actors to bring the story to life. However, the film hasn't scored well with viewers, sitting on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics' score of 41% and an audience score of 50%.

For director, co-writer and star Jerry Seinfeld, “Unfrosted” was an opportunity to bring something a little less serious to the entertainment zeitgeist. A humorless life without the ability to make fun of ourselves, he postured, doesn’t make for “good living.”
“Don’t give up laughing and humor and comedy in your life. It’s the best way to get through life,” Seinfeld said. “We all want to not hurt each other’s feelings. But if we go too far, and nobody can make fun of anybody, that’s not good living.”
“Unfrosted” is a fictionalized account of the creation of the Kellogg’s staple Pop-Tarts. The plot takes a “space race” approach, with Post Cereal as the other heavyweight in the fight to be the first to craft the toasted pastry treat.
It costars a kaleidoscope of Hollywood funny people, including Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant,...

Jerry Seinfeld is having an odd time lately.
Fans and critics really enjoyed his appearance in HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm series finale — which creator Larry David used to both comment on, and improve upon, the much-maligned Seinfeld closer. But this week, the 70-year-old comedy legend was slammed on social media for a recent interview where he declared “the extreme left” has hurt the comedy industry. Now here comes his new Netflix movie which is getting a sharply divided reaction from critics and overall a pretty low average score.
Seinfeld’s Unfrosted (trailer below) is a zany star-filled comedy that tells the story of rival cereal companies, Kellogg’s and Post, “racing to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever”— Pop-Tarts. Seinfeld stars in, co-wrote and directed the film, which also stars Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant, Amy Schumer, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, Sarah Cooper and Bill Burr.

Perhaps, like Jerry Seinfeld, you too have spent hours wondering: What’s the deal with Pop Tarts?! Is it a breakfast item or just undercover dessert? How do they get all that delicious fruity goo inside the tiny squares? Is there a goo gun? Who came up with the idea of putting “docker holes” on the top to keep the toaster steam out? Was it Bob from Engineering? And why the frosting, people? Was there not enough sugar already in there already? I wanna know!

Plot: Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen, Unfrosted stars Jerry Seinfeld in his directorial debut.
Review: It took nine years after the series finale of Seinfeld for Jerry Seinfeld’s big screen debut, Bee Movie. That surreal, animated adventure was a spot-on continuation of the stand-up comedian’s brand of observational humor told within the context of a strangely specific world. Unfrosted, which reunited Seinfeld with his team of writers from Bee Movie, is another glimpse into a surreal world that allows him to explore his distinct type of comedy with an all-star cast of talent playing real and fictional characters. Boasting glossy, retro visuals and capitalizing on Seinfeld’s well-known love of breakfast, Unfrosted looks like it was fun to make. I only wish it was as much fun to watch.

Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tart comedy Unfrosted debuted in Los Angeles on Tuesday, where its star-studded cast was also joined by a special guest heaping praise on the film.
Jay Leno — alongside wife Mavis — crashed The Hollywood Reporter‘s red carpet interview with Seinfeld, as he joked, “I’m so sick of these hard-hitting, controversial documentaries. Can’t somebody just make a comedy anymore? Everything is a teachable moment and, ‘Oh I learned this.’ I just want to come and laugh.”
Seinfeld teased, “Because you’re not smart enough to learn anything,” as the friends of 45 years laughed, and Leno declared that the movie “is exactly what America needs right now, it’s going to be a really funny movie.”

Summer doesn’t officially begin until June 20, 2024, but for the entertainment industry, the summer season starts in early May. Unfrosted, a comedy about the invention of Pop-Tarts, features a star-studded cast including Jerry Seinfeld, Hugh Grant, and Amy Schumer. The movie is full of humor and doesn't take itself too seriously, focusing on getting laughs and entertaining the audience. Screen Rant's interview with the supporting cast reveals insights into the fun and chaotic production process of Unfrosted.
The idea of making a movie out of the invention of the Pop-Tart may seem outlandish, but any fan of Jerry Seinfeld knows that "outlandish" is where comedy thrives. Unfrosted, releasing May 3 on Netflix, turns the invention of the tasty breakfast treat into a grandiose epic on the scale of the Space Race, complete with corporate espionage, sugar-selling kingpins, and, of course, the threat of nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union.
Jerry Seinfeld stars, directs, and co-writes the 1960s-set comedy, and Unfrosted's supporting cast includes a veritable who's who of famous faces.

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld is telling it how it is and thus recently did not hesitate to share a candid insight during an interview with GQ magazine. Despite his extensive experience in the industry and involvement across various genres, including his upcoming directorial debut, Seinfeld acknowledged a harsh reality and that the industry might be on the decline. Nonetheless, he moved forward with his directorial venture, undeterred by the current challenging landscape as per the actor himself.

Jerry Seinfeld quipped this week that “the movie business is over” because of a sense of confusion among show business workers.

From Beanie Babies to Pop-Tarts, the history of distinctly American consumerism is taking a big screen swing.
Jerry Seinfeld writes, directs, and stars in Netflix’s “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story” centered on cereal rival companies Kellogg’s and Post that set out in a culinary equivalent of the space race: create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast. Not a single person asked for this, but we're getting it anyway. You likely never wondered about the intense brand rivalry between Kellogg's and Post that went into the invention of Pop-Tarts -- and, honestly, why would you? -- but the real-life drama behind the breakfast staple proved too much to resist, apparently. In a world where we can get an Oscar-winning drama about Facebook from one of our greatest living directors, a weirdly watchable biopic on the guy behind McDonald's starring Batman, and most recently Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's "Moneyball"-like deep-dive into Nike's Air Jordan sneakers, why the heck wouldn't we get a movie all about the process behind how breakfast was reinvented forever?

What’s the deal with Unfrosted, the new Netflix movie from Jerry Seinfeld? Thanks to the new trailer, we find out exactly how the comedy spoofs the invention of Pop-Tarts. Watch it below.
Making his feature directorial debut, Seinfeld stars as a Kellogg’s cereal exec who aims to redefine breakfast with the toaster pastry we now know as the Pop-Tart. With Melissa McCarthy at his side, Seinfeld faces off against Post exec Amy Schumer, “stacking the deck” by enlisting celebrities like Steve Schwinn, “Chef Boyardee,” and Jack Lalanne.
Here’s the official logline: “Battle Creek, Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A wildly imaginative tale of ambition, betrayal, and menacing milkmen — sweetened with artificial ingredients.”

Netflix has released the trailer for Jerry Seinfeld’s upcoming Pop-Tart movie, “Unfrosted,” set for release on May 3.
Per Netflix’s Tudum, the logline for “Unfrosted” reads, “Michigan, 1963. Kellogg’s and Post, sworn cereal rivals, race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. A tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen, ‘Unfrosted’ stars writer-director Jerry Seinfeld.”
As Tudum acknowledges on the official “Unfrosted” page, Seinfeld has been contemplating the Pop-Tart origin story for years. For example, he made his artistic vision clear in a 2018 post on X/Twitter: “At one point I was thinking about an invention of the Pop Tart movie. Imagine the drunk on sugar-power Kellogg’s cereal culture of the mid-60’s in Battle Creek, Mi. That’s a vibe I could work with.” He also brought up the idea on “The Late Show” in 2010.

Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story boasts an impressive comedic cast, including Jerry Seinfeld, Hugh Grant, and Christian Slater, making it one of the most anticipated films of 2024. The film is a semi-biographical take on the competition between Kellogg's and Post to create a popular breakfast pastry, inspired by a Pop-Tart joke in Seinfeld's stand-up routine. With the recent success of biographical product development films and the buzz surrounding Pop-Tarts after the viral Pop-Tarts Bowl, Netflix's Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story has the potential to be a major streaming hit.

Whoopi Goldberg and Steve Martin are both defending Jo Koy after his Golden Globes hosting gig earned him a wave of criticism from viewers, industry members and TV critics.
While hosting The View on Tuesday, Goldberg expressed that in Hollywood, “hosting gigs are just brutal. … If you’ve not been in these rooms before, and you’re sort of thrust out there, it’s hit or miss,” Goldberg said. “I love Jo Koy. He makes me just crazy because he’s funny. I don’t know whether it was the room. I don’t know whether the jokes. I didn’t get to see it. But I do know that he is as good as it gets when it comes to stand-up.”
The actress, host and comedian pointed to her own challenges hosting events as an example of the difficulty nailing these kinds of Hollywood gigs, even as fellow View co-hosts offered her praise.

Exclusive: The writers are organized. There have been thousands of writers picketing outside of the traditional Hollywood studios from Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. as well as the tech upstarts Netflix and Amazon.
But Deadline understands a more low-key operation is in place to target specific locations across LA that are being used for filming in order to shut them down and wreak havoc on the studios’ bottom line.
We hear the team has managed to stop production on series such as Disney+’s Marvel drama Wonder Man and Apple’s Maya Rudolph-fronted dramedy Loot.
How did they do it? Ostensibly, with two people each holding picket signs. Under labor laws, that’s all that’s required for an official picket line, which in turn means that the other unions, from IATSE to the Teamsters can refuse cross the picket line.

Glenn Close has been nominated for multiple Oscars over the course of 40 years, but she has never got ahold of a statuette. She kicked off her career on Broadway and had her breakthrough role in The World According to Garp in 1982 when director George Roy Hill asked her to audition with Robin Williams, and she earned her first Oscar nomination right away. Close has a natural talent for comedy and a flair for drama; that's how her performances are so charming and easy to relate to.
Throughout her fantastic career, Glenn Close has earned three Emmys, three Golden Globes, three Tonys, and two SAG awards. If she ever wins an Oscar, she will be very close to earning an Egot. Glenn Close's best movies include blockbusters, comedies, and heavy dramas, ranging from Guardians of the Galaxy to The Wife, and she continues to find great roles, meaning it's not too late for an Oscar win.

A handful of smaller films will start to test audience enthusiasm for movie theaters without big tentpoles. It’s been a rocky summer for specialty releases, and an uphill climb as arthouses emerge from Covid jitters with franchise films sucking up oxygen and screens. But superheroes are on hiatus.
“There isn’t giant competition from tentpoles,” said Howard Cohen, co-president of Roadside Attractions. “On balance, it’s good. Obviously, if you have Top Gun, it sucks the air out of the marketplace. It’s still better — for the specialty market — to have three or four indies than one giant release. Summering depicts the story of four girls the summer before they enter middle school as they face what it means to grow up.
Lake Bell and Sarah Cooper recently sat down with uInterview founder Erik Meers for a conversation about what makes the movie stand out from other “coming of age” films.
“James Ponsoldt, the director and co-writer, he’s coming at it from a parental standpoint,” Bell shared. “He’s an independent filmmaker and he has children now and thought, ‘Gosh, there’s the Stand by Me, there’s a multitude of films that we could talk about that have a young man’s journey on adventure. Little girls don’t have that.’ It’s refreshing, and kind of needed in a way, to think about all the anxiety we’ve gone through in this past two and a half years and children are all feeling that. It becomes universal in the thematics.

The film is a quasi-reimagining of the “Stand By Me” story … but this time it’s four girl pre-teens that discover a dead body, while at the same time celebrating their long grade school bond right before transitioning to middle school. “Summering” opens in theaters on August 12th. Featuring Lia Barnett, Sanai Victoria, Madalen Mills, Eden Grace Redfield, Sarah Cooper, Megan Mullally, Ashley Madekwe and Lake Bell. Written by James Ponsoldt and Benjamin Percy.

Exclusive: Maria Bakalova (Bodies Bodies Bodies) has joined the casts of Andrew Durham’s feature directorial debut Fairyland for American Zoetrope, and Jerry Seinfeld’s first film Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story for Netflix. Details as to the roles she’ll be playing in the features have not been disclosed, though we hear she’ll only be making a cameo in the latter.
Fairyland is a father-daughter coming-of-age story that Durham adapted from Alysia Abbott’s Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father. The book originally published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2012 is set against San Francisco’s vibrant cultural scene of the 1970s and ’80s, both before and after the AIDS epidemic — a crisis that would ultimately claim the life of Abbott’s father, the widowed poet and gay activist, Steve Abbott. Bakalova joins an ensemble led by Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy, which also includes Geena Davis, Cody Fern,...

There’s a moment within the first few minutes of Summering — James Ponsoldt’s delicate, affectionate tribute to the wonder years (or more specifically, the seasonal wonder months) between childhood’s end and teenage riots — that captures the blurred, giddy adrenaline rush of youth in full bloom. Four girls are goofing around, hiding in bathtubs and scaring each other with masks. Someone’s mom shoos them all out of the house. And then the quartet begins to sprint across a front lawn in slow motion, screaming and giggling as they...

Chicago – Filmmaker James Ponsoldt has earned the moniker “veteran” in front of his name, after notable hits like “The Spectacular Now,” “The End of the Tour” and “The Circle” (with Tom Hanks). He’s back with a seasonal film called “Summering,” featuring four girls going through their own “Stand by Me” moment.
Ponsoldt’s latest film was co-written with Benjamin Percey, and it’s possibly his most romantic. It’s a quasi-reimagining of the “Stand By Me” story … but this time it’s a group of girl pre-teens that discover a dead body, and are celebrating their long grade school bond right before transitioning to middle school. Instead of going to the authorities regarding their find, they decide to investigate on their own, leading to the last adventure of their summer and the path to whatever is coming next. The cast includes Sarah Cooper, Megan Mullally, Ashley Madekwe and Lake Bell as their mothers.
