I’ve been waiting a while to talk about this movie. Over a year after its debut at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, Demetri Martin’s filmmaking debut Dean is finally hitting theaters this week. Already a successful comedian and actor, Martin shows off his writing and directing skills in a big way here. Dean is an assured first time behind the camera, to say the least. After winning a prize at Tribeca last year, the flick was picked up for release by CBS Films and has sat back for over a year, biding its time. Now, the film is coming out and I’m here to remind you that it was well worth the wait. Few releases this year have been better. It’s a special work. Here’s a bit on the movie itself. As previously mentioned, Martin writes, directs, and stars in this dramedy about grief. Martin’s...

Demetri Martin, best known for the distinctive deadpan of his stand-up comedy, makes the transition into feature filmmaking as writer, director and star with just the right blend of humor and heartbreak. Dean is a comedy about grief – specifically, what to do with sorrow when you're still hurting and the people around you have moved on.
Martin excels in the title role, a Brooklyn cartoonist named Dean who's reeling from the death of his mother. He goes through the motions, but just under the surface his pain is palpable; his...

As The Walking Dead season 7 premiere edges closer, we look back over some of season 1-6’s best ever moments. Spoilers…
Warning: contains major spoilers for The Walking Dead seasons 1- 6.
The world of The Walking Dead is a cruel one. That’s the lesson its showrunners have impressed upon viewers time and again through six seasons of Walker attacks, bloody beheadings, surprise crossbow bolts to the brain, and—how could we not mention it—bludgeonings by psychopaths wielding barbed-wire-wrapped baseball bats.
That’s why you won’t find much fun in the selection below. The Walking Dead isn’t really a birthday-parties-and-puppies kind of place; it’s more a viscera-and-machine gun sort of deal.

One of the final films that I got to see last week at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival was also ironically the best of the bunch. That film was Dean, the cinematic writing and directorial debut of actor/comedian Demetri Martin. Not only was it absolutely fantastic, it was also declared an award winner at the festival, taking home the Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature. That’s a big feather in this one’s cap as it begins to plan for a release in theaters, presumably later on this year. I know I can’t wait for you to see it, though I’ll have more on it later. For the moment, this will also be a piece highlighting all of the award winners, so let’s do that now! Quickly though, a bit on the film itself. As mentioned, Martin writes, directs, and stars in this dramedy about grief.

The most piercing comedy is often mined from the darker aspects of life, presenting our fears in a new, hopefully amusing light. While Demetri Martin‘s stand-up has tinges of this, represented in his lo-fi sketches and carefully constructed one-liners, his directing and writing debut Dean effectively melds, both on the page and stylistically, a dramatic backbone with his personal brand.
Setting the tone by opening in a cemetery, Dean (Martin) places flowers on his mother’s grave, alongside his father, Robert (Kevin Kline), hinting at a lingering certainty of death that occupies his character’s headspace. Working as a cartoonist in New York City, he’s trying to get his second book of illustrations off the ground, but keeps coming back to images of the Grim Reaper as he processes the loss of his mother and a broken engagement. If this all sounds rather dour, Martin’s approach is relatively upbeat,...

Abe Vigoda, a veteran character actor best known for roles in "The Godfather" and sitcom "Barney Miller," has died. He was 94.
Vigoda, who passed away in New Jersey of natural causes, became known for his signature hangdog appearance, and was the repeated target of death hoaxes frequently touting his demise. That odd occurrence became a running joke throughout the latter half of his career.
The then-middle-aged actor was all but unknown when he landed the role of Tessio in 1972's "The Godfather," a part he reprised as part of a flashback in "The Godfather Part II" in 1974. He went on to appear in film such as "The Don Is Dead," "Newman's Law," "The Cheap Detective," "Joe Versus the Volcano," and "Jury Duty."
But television took up much of the rest of Vigoda's career, where he shone as always-on-the-verge-of-retiring Detective Phil Fish on beloved comedy series "Barney Miller." The character...

Los Angeles (AP) — Natalie Cole, the Grammy-winning daughter of Nat "King" Cole who carried on her late father's musical legacy and, through technology, shared a duet with him on "Unforgettable," has died. She was 65.
Natalie died Thursday evening at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles due to compilations from ongoing health issues, her family said in a statement.
"Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived ... with dignity, strength and honor. Our beloved Mother and sister will be greatly missed and remain Unforgettable in our hearts forever," read the statement from her son Robert Yancy and sisters Timolin and Casey Cole.
Cole had battled drug problems and hepatitis that forced her to undergo a kidney transplant in May 2009. Cole's older sister, Carol "Cookie" Cole, died the day she received the transplant. Their brother, Nat Kelly Cole, died in 1995.

Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.

Doctor Who, Sherlock, Game Of Thrones and more... As nominated by Den Of Geek writers, here are our favourite TV episodes of 2014

Too much, however, is better than not enough. Too much enables debate, and better than that, it enables the ultimate geek pursuit: list-making.
