Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson, who is known for her role as Black Widow in the MCU said that her husband Colin Jost was “incredibly helpful” with their baby son Cosmo on the sets of ‘Asteroid City’ and even helped burp the baby. In a conversation with People magazine, Johansson got candid about filming her latest project ‘Asteroid City’ just eight weeks after giving birth to her son Cosmo in August 2021.
“I hadn’t worked,” she recalled. “Not just because I had a baby, but there was Covid. I hadn’t shot anything in like three years or something like that.”

Wes Anderson’s latest endeavor Asteroid City is making its crash-landing into theaters this Friday, June 23rd, and it has a fitting soundtrack to match. As a preview, Jarvis Cocker has shared one of his contributions to the film called “Dear Alien (Who Art In Heaven),” a single he wrote with Anderson and his former Pulp bandmate Richard Hawley. The song also features Seu Jorge, who was prominently featured on the soundtrack for Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Considering Asteroid City takes place in a desert town in 1955, the soundtrack comes chock-full of period-setting tunes like classic bluegrass and country as well as mid-century pop. Along with a couple of originals from Cocker are songs by Bing Crosby, The Springfields (featuring a young Dusty Springfield), Burl Ives, Tex Ritter, and many more, as well as a score by Alexandre Desplat.

Look near the top of Wes Anderson’s latest rolling cast and you’ll find Rupert Friend, who made a brief appearance in The French Dispatch, and a rare Wes first-timer, Maya Hawke. In Anderson’s characteristically decorative 1950s-set film, Hawke and Friend share a budding romance as, respectively, an elementary school teacher and a singing cowboy. After one conceit is revealed, they also appear as actors in a troupe reminiscent of The Group Theatre. They share the screen with everyone from Tom Hanks and Willem Defoe to Adrien Brody and Scarlett Johansson. Stars in a Wes Anderson these days are like dots to a Lichtenstein; but in Asteroid City, Hawke and Friend still manage to shine.

The process of making a Wes Anderson movie involves an immersive environment, from sets to music to big dinners at the end of the day — and the Covid-19 pandemic helped, said Anderson and his cast members at a Cannes Film Festival press conference on Wednesday, the day after the premiere of “Asteroid City,” his quirky sci-fi movie set in the 1950s.
“The world is there, and you’re in it,” said Scarlett Johansson of the film, which tells of alien contact in a colorful Southwestern U.S. desert town through the framing device of a black-and-white TV documentary from the 1950s. “They very much create the whole environment — it’s a physical, tangible, usable space. It’s more like doing theater and not the familiar process of being on a soundstage and going back to your trailer and having all this down time.”

Given his growing tendency to line up half of Hollywood to appear in his films, anyone cast in a Wes Anderson movie might worry just how much screen time they’ll end up getting.
Not Fisher Stevens.
After minor roles in The Grand Budapest Hotel (a concierge), Isle of Dogs (the voice of a mutt called Scrap) and The French Dispatch (an unnamed magazine story editor), he’s now set to make a similarly background appearance in Asteroid City, Anderson’s latest, and featuring arguably the director’s most ludicrous array of top-tier talent to date (a list so long, it may test the wide lenses of Cannes’ red carpet paparazzi when it bows May 23). And very happily so.
“I’m around. I mean, you’ll see me in the film. But I wouldn’t say it’s my Oscar-winning performance,” Stevens tells The Hollywood Reporter, adding that blink-and-you’ll-miss-it or not,...

With a headlining UFC fight on the way, mixed martial arts star Mackenzie Dern is still doing some training but also knows the importance of getting in rest and cooling down.
Taking to her Instagram, the 29-year-old fighter shared a quick video clip of herself shot from a distance in a beautiful outdoor setting.
In the video, Dern is standing sideways in green grass, with beautiful plants around her and blue skies as the backdrop. She’s rocking the tiniest of bikinis, possibly red, although the far-away shot makes it difficult to distinguish.
The song Final Semana by Papatinho, Seu Jorge, and Black Alien plays in the background. Dern picks up a garden hose from the lawn and proceeds to water herself down during the warm weather.

Let’s get this out of the way right from the top: Wes Anderson has never made a bad movie, and — in all likelihood — he probably never will. He’s too particular, too immaculate, too in command of his craft. Of course, the fact that he has always been so sure of himself only makes it more tempting to chart the progress of his career and to measure his films against each other. Or maybe it’s just fun because there are still only nine of them, and everyone seems to have their own favorite. Who could say?

Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp is going from the world of the Upside Down to world of the culinary arts in the newly released comedy Abe from Brazilian director Fernando Grostein Andrade.
The film, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival last year, features Schnapp as the food-obsessed titular pre-teen Abe — although that is not his only name. Coming soon to VOD platforms everywhere, Abe looks to be a film that will appeal to the entire family. Admitted, I do not have children and do not live with any family members, so maybe I am completely off-base in describing Abe as a family film. Yet the trailer clearly shows a lighthearted approach to the material. And what marks it as different from other so-called "family films" is that it appears to acknowledge cultural and religious differences without becoming contentious about it. In other words, it feels like a very indie film from an international perspective, even though everyone is speaking English. Directed by Fernando Grostein Andrade, the film stars Noah Schnapp (Stranger Things), Seu Jorge (City of God and The Life Aquatic with...

Some kids are raised by a single mother, while others may have two moms. There are plenty out there who’ve been adopted, or else share their parents with half-siblings from multiple remarriages. For every “normal family” we see on TV, there are countless others in the real world that defy all the stereotypes — although you’ve gotta admit, the home life depicted in “Abe,” whose Big Apple-based 12-year-old title character (played by “Stranger Things” trouper Noah Schnapp) is the product of a Palestinian father (Arian Moayed) and an Israeli mother (Dagmara Dominczyk), skews awfully far from the ordinary.
Family dinners, which bring together grandparents from both sides to rehash the religious and political disputes of their respective faiths and countries, are never less than awkward. But Abe has an idea, and an obsession. Abe loves to cook. He’s like Julia Child’s “inner child,” and has more “spirit” that Rocco Dispirito.

"You are mixing 'fusion' with 'confusion'." Blue Fox Entertainment has unveiled the trailer for a fun family film titled simply Abe, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year in the Sundance Kids section. Abe is a 12-year-old boy from Brooklyn, an aspiring chef who is half-Israeli, half-Palestinian. He decides to cook a meal to unite his mixed family, but everything goes wrong. Surprise, surprise. Starring talented young actor Noah Schnapp as Abe, and a full cast including Seu Jorge, Mark Margolis, Arian Moayed, Dagmara Dominczyk, Salem Murphy, Tom Mardirosian, Daniel Oreskes, plus Gero Camilo. It's rather nice to see Seu Jorge in this as a chef he look up to, smart casting for that role. And the food in here looks delicious. I want to eat it all! This also reminds me of the story of Chef Flynn. Get a taste. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Fernando Grostein Andrade's Abe,...

Does Brazil need a film that openly advocates armed confrontation against its far-right government? That’s the first question that needs to be asked when discussing “Marighella,” actor Wagner Moura’s directorial debut focused on the final year in the life of left-wing insurrectionist Carlos Marighella during Brazil’s ruthless military dictatorship. For whatever one might think of the film’s merits as an adrenaline-filled shoot-‘em-up hagiographic biopic of a resistance-fighter/terrorist, the penultimate scene, in which a woman picks up a machine gun and looks directly at the camera, is unambiguous in its deeply troubling message. If there were doubts, Moura doesn’t lose any opportunity to compare the current administration to its ideologically similar predecessor from the 1960s, thereby forcing viewers to judge the motivations of a film whose irresponsibility surpasses even its superficiality.
Of course the movie’s genesis began long before the fascist-leaning Jair Bolsonaro...

Worried that growing political tension in Brazil may hamper the domestic release of “Marighella,” Wagner Moura’s directorial debut about a leftist revolutionary, the movie’s producers may seek to crowd-fund its distribution independently.
“We are going to fight for it,” producer Andrea Barata Ribeiro said ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Berlinale on Friday. She added that she wants to launch “Marighella” in Brazil right after Berlin. “If necessary, we will launch it independently through crowd-funding.”
Actor-director Moura, best-known Stateside for his starring role in “Narcos,” has little doubt that conservatives in Brazil don’t want the story of “Marighella” to be told. The film follows a ragtag group of resistance fighters, led by former congressman Carlos Marighella, who seek to ignite a popular revolution against Brazil’s military dictatorship, which seized power in 1964 and ruled until 1985.

It may be a touch early to call it, but Fernando Grostein Andrade’s “Abe” appears to be putting in an early bid for this Sundance’s most charming film. It will certainly be the festival’s most charming film about an Israeli-Jewish kid with an identity crisis who attempts to find his way out of fraught familial connections through the magic of cooking. After all, who doesn’t like food? Such is the apparent theme of “Abe,” which stars “Stranger Things” lead Noah Schnapp in the eponymous role as a foodie on a tasty mission.
Per the film’s official synopsis: “The Israeli-Jewish side of his family calls him Avram. The Palestinian-Muslim side Ibrahim. His first-generation American agnostic lawyer parents call him Abraham. But the 12-year-old kid with a blog from Brooklyn just prefers, well, Abe. Abe, a foodie who loves to cook, has never had a birthday...

New films by Agnieszka Holland, Agnes Varda and Isabel Coixet have been added to the official lineup of the upcoming Berlin Film Festival, along with special screenings of directorial debuts by British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and “Narcos” star Wagner Moura of Brazil.
The Berlinale added 11 titles to its competition slate Thursday, representing countries such as China, Norway, Mongolia and Israel. Of the 18 competition titles selected so far, eight are directed by women, including festival opener “The Kindness of Strangers,” by Danish director Lone Scherfig.
Holland’s eagerly anticipated “Mr. Jones,” starring James Norton and Vanessa Kirby, will have its world premiere in Potsdamer Platz. The politically charged film centers on the real-life Welsh journalist Gareth Jones (Norton), whose reporting uncovered a deadly famine in Ukraine in the 1930s.

If Desert Trip, the one-off festival of golden gods Goldenvoice produced in 2016, was “Oldchella,” what handy appellation should we give its more modest but more sustainable successor of these last two summers, Arroyo Seco Weekend? Olderbutnotthatoldchella? At the second annual gathering, held this weekend at Brookside at the Rose Bowl, you could get bogged down in the analytics of who exactly this none-too-tightly-focused fest is geared toward. Or you could forego demographic studies and just give in to the good vibes generated by all that grass… golf-course grass. Why ask why Generations Y, X and Boomer get on so well, when they have Jack White, endless artisanal cocktails, vegan rolls, grassy knolls and “You Oughta Know” nostalgia to bridge the gaps?
Year one of Arroyo Seco had been a resounding success, except for two major problems, both solved this second time around. One had been the positioning of the 2017 main stage,...

Everybody loves those Nike Air Mags from Back To The Future Part II, especially since the company actually sells them from time to time, but they’re definitely not the only pair of badass kicks you can usually only find in a movie. There’s also the customized Team Zissou-branded Adidas Roms from Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic, which sneaker-loving film buffs have been pestering Adidas to make for years. Finally, the company came through earlier this month, but you may have already missed your chance to buy a pair of the custom blue and yellow Roms.

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since David Bowie‘s death. It hurts for many reasons, but if there’s any solace to glean from the loss, it’s that Bowie has been properly mourned. Not just among civilians — you’d be hard-pressed to find an artist who didn’t turn in a Bowie cover at some point. Here are some of our favorites from the past year, ranging from deep cuts to the obvious ones.

One of David Bowie’s most revered films turns 40 this year, a milestone being marked two different ways: “The Man Who Fell to Earth” is returning to English cinemas and its soundtrack is finally being released for the first time. The CD version will be available on September 9, the same day English moviegoers will have the chance to revisit Nicolas Roeg’s film about an alien (Bowie) experiencing our humble planet, while a box set including a 2xLP is set to follow on November 18.

Wes Anderson’s underrated 2004 film “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” follows Steve Zissou (Bill Murray), an eccentric oceanographer, and his large crew on a revenge mission to kill a rare “jaguar shark” that murdered his partner. In the film, Brazilian singer Seu Jorge plays Pelé dos Santos, a member of Zissou’s crew, who memorably sings Portuguese acoustic covers of David Bowie songs. Jorge later released a collection of these covers on an album entitled “The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions Featuring Seu Jorge.” Bowie himself remarked about Jorge’s covers, “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.”

It may be called Pelé: Birth of a Legend, but Jeff and Michael Zimbalist‘s film is really about Ginga soccer and Brazil at risk of losing its soul. The climax depicts the 1958 World Cup with the country’s unexpected run to the final on the back of a seventeen year-old hobbled by a sprained knee, but it’s not his goal scoring that inspires confidence. His ability to run around the pitch in complete ignorance of the Europeans’ formation game lights a fire that burns deeper than technique. Vicente Feola (Vincent D’Onofrio trying a Portuguese accent) was hired to rebrand the team after a debilitating loss in 1950 and poor sportsmanship in 1954 by invoking that European way, but Pelé (Kevin de Paula) refused to forget his identity.
Ginga goes back to the African slave heritage of Brazil’s black community — explained as a fighting style and spirituality all but outlawed outside the soccer field.
