Shortly before graduating from Colgate University in 1996 with a degree
in creative writing, Doherty managed to break into Hollywood through a
somewhat unusual channel: The university's career services office
happened to pair him up with Colgate alum
Lydia Woodward, which translated
into a between-semesters internship on Woodward's hit show,
ER (1994).
