Cole Escola has landed their next big role after winning a Tony Award for their work in the Broadway play Oh, Mary.

The 38-year-old actor, who uses they/them pronouns, will star alongside Melissa McCarthy in the upcoming animated musical comedy Margie Claus, set for a Christmas 2027 season release.

Deadline reports that in the film sees “Santa go missing on Christmas Eve, with his wife Margie assembling a rag-tag team of long-retired reindeer to rescue Santa and save Christmas.”

Cole will play Levi, Margie’s “right-hand elf.”

Melissa announced the news in a cute Instagram video in which she and Cole are both seen wearing matching Christmas-dresses made out of sequins and balloons.

Margie Claus, directed by Kirk DeMicco and written be Melissa‘s husband Ben Falcone with Damon Jones, will be released on November 5, 2027.

Melissa McCarthy snuck in a little Christmas in July celebration with a video teasing her upcoming film “Margie Claus” and announcing Cole Escola joined the film.

In a video shared on social media, McCarthy appeared in a red Christmas dress decorated with balloons and ornaments, and a giant bow atop her head. She teased her upcoming film.

“Happy Christmas in July,” she said. “I am so excited to be playing Margie Claus in the upcoming animated Christmas musical feature ‘Margie Claus.'”

She did not just appear to celebrate the holiday halfway point though. She also took the time to announce who had been cast as Levi – the head elf – in the film. The new character will be voiced by Cole Escola – who came into the video wearing the same Christmas outfit that McCarthy had on only in green.

Directed by Kirk DeMicco, the film sees Santa go missing on Christmas Eve, with his wife Margie assembling a rag-tag team of long-retired reindeer to rescue Santa and save Christmas. Escola will be playing Levi, Margie’s “right-hand elf,” per a social media video with McCarthy, which you can view below.

The script is by Ben Falcone and Damon Jones. McCarthy and Falcone are producing alongside Michelle Wong, who boards the project after recently producing Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters. The film will be released in theaters on November 5, 2027.

Speaking on a panel at SXSW the night after the premiere of his new film “Another Simple Favor,” he shared that in the lead-up to the release of “Bridesmaids,” he was told his success or failure could have a significant impact on how women’s ideas would be treated in the industry moving forward. Though Feig was the director, the film was otherwise led by women: Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo wrote the screenplay and appeared in it alongside Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper and Melissa McCarthy.

The 2024 Tribeca Festival jury has been announced with a star-studded filmmaker lineup.

This year, David O. DC Studios is wasting no time in setting a release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now that the movie has found its director.

The high-profile movie will fly into cinemas on June 26, 2026, DC and Warner Bros. announced Tuesday. It is the second film to receive a release date since James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to overhaul DC under the new banner DC Studios. The first was Superman, which Gunn is currently shooting for a July 2025 release date.

Flimmaker Craig Gillespie was tapped by Gunn and Safran to shepherd Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon). She’ll play Superman’s Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. Theater Camp director Molly Gordon is on board to helm Small Parts, a reimagining for Searchlight Pictures of Outrageous Fortune, which starred Bette Midler and Shelley Long as rivals.

Gordon, who also stars in The Bear, and co-writer Allie Levitan will do a new take on the 1987 comedy directed by Arther Hiller. Small Parts will center on rival actors who clash on a scrappy indie film set and accidentally find themselves entangled in a game of cat-and-mouse more outrageous than any movie, according to a synopsis from the producers.

After acquiring Molly Gordon’s Sundance movie Theater Camp for $8M, Searchlight Pictures is back in business with the filmmaker again on the movie Small Parts. The movie is currently in development.

The pic is a new take on the 1987 Shelly Long and Bette Midler blockbuster comedy Outrageous Fortune. In the pic, co-written by Gordon and Allie Levitan, two actresses clash on a scrappy indie movie set accidentally find themselves entangled in a game of cat-and-mouse more outrageous than any movie.

Searchlight SVP of Production Taylor Friedman is overseeing Small Parts, reporting into Searchlight Production Heads Dan Tram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas.

Gordon co-directed, co-wrote, and starred in Theater Camp, which won the Sundance U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble and was one of 2023’s Top Ten Independent Films by the National Board of Review. Gordon and her co-writers were nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.

Christian Slater is going to be a dad again!

The 54-year-old actor’s wife Brittany debuted her baby bump while posing on the red carpet at the premiere of his new movie Unfrosted on Tuesday (April 30) held at The Egyptian Theatre Hollywood in Los Angeles.

This will be the second child for the couple who have been married since 2013. They are also parents to a 4-year-old daughter. Christian is also dad to daughter Eliana, 22, and son Jaden, 25, whom he shares with ex-wife Ryan Haddon.

Melissa McCarthy brought the fun to the 2024 Vanity Fair Oscar Party on Sunday (March 10) at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The 53-year-old actress switched up her look with a leather dress, featuring what looks to be a lion head door knocker on the front, and she carried a bedazzled cannoli purse.

Melissa was, of course, once again joined by her husband Ben Falcone, after the two also attended the Oscars earlier in the night.

During the awards show, Melissa reunited with her Thunder Force co-star Octavia Spencer to present Best Original Screenplay.

Oppenheimer took the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night.

The film won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures, a day after taking top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Other big winners were Beef, which also won at the SAG Awards and Sunday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards, along with Succession and The Bear, both of which also won SAG Awards on Saturday.

Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas accepted the theatrical motion picture award, noting that in a room full of producers, “This means so much coming from you, this room is full of people whose work we admire,” adding, “You know how hard the job can be, you also know how great the job can be; it’s the best job on set.” She also called director Christopher Nolan (who is also her husband) “the best producer you can possibly hope for.

Margot Robbie, Bradley Cooper and America Ferrera are among the celebrities in attendance at the 2024 Producers Guild Awards held at The Ray Dolby Ballroom on Sunday evening (February 25) in Hollywood.

The stars stepped out to help celebrate the producers behind the movies and TV shows of the past year.

Indian filmmaker Ravi Muppa will adapt his Oscar-qualifying short “Incognito” into a feature-length film.

The executive producers of the short, Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap (“Kennedy”) and Ranjan Singh (“Udta Punjab”) under the Flip Films banner and Nicholas Weinstock and Divya D’Souza of Invention Studios, are reuniting to produce the feature.

In “Incognito,” a lonely motel receptionist makes an extra buck by selling the hidden-cam videos of his unsuspecting guests on the internet. But when one such guest turns out to be a young girl at risk of being trafficked, he faces a crisis of conscience and a mission.

“Incognito” has been selected at more than 20 international film festivals, including the Oscar-qualifying Palm Springs Shortfest, Tirana and LA Shorts, and is a 2024 Oscar contender in the live action short film category, where candidates from India include “Nocturnal Burger” and “The Broken Table.”

SAG-AFTRA may still be on strike, but studios are, nevertheless, pushing their Oscar contenders to garner the adequate (and allowed) attention they need to land nominations.

One of the main methods is getting industry voters out to screenings and making films available on the Academy Screening Room and BAFTA screening platforms. With the two significant organizations banning physical DVD screeners, voting members rely on the respective digital viewing portals to catch up on some of this year’s contenders vying for awards consideration.

The Academy performs a heavy vetting process for each film that chooses to submit for consideration. Historically, over 300 movies are in the running for best picture consideration, with more films joining the fray over the next several months. Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) announced today that since its inception in 2008, the nonprofit has over $795 million pledged to fund critically needed cancer research.

Commemorating SU2C’s progress over the last 15 years, the organization’s biennial telecast aired on Saturday, August 19 and highlighted special moments with stars across film, television, sports and journalism who have supported the SU2C movement throughout the years.

Since the last telecast in 2021, funding pledged from the show as well as corporate, foundation and individual donors has totaled over $60.1 million.
