Within 28 minutes of sending Mindy Kaling their short film about the lives of two young girls in India, Adam J. Graves and wife Suchitra Mattai heard back.

“Even though, tonally, this is so different than other projects I’ve worked on,” Kaling tells The Hollywood Reporter of boarding the short as a producer, “I just felt like there is a spiritual link between me and these kinds of female coming-of-age stories that Anuja is.”

Philosophy professor-turned-filmmaker Adam J. Graves never imagined his feature directorial debut would land on Netflix and garner an Oscar nomination. But a Dairy Queen run during the pandemic changed everything.

“We were coming home from Dairy Queen – it was the only place open – and I turned to my wife and said, ‘You know what, I’m going to make a movie,'” Graves tells Variety. “I thought she would just say forget it because it’s kind of crazy hairbrained. We’ve got kids and financial responsibilities. But instead she was like, ‘Let’s do it.'”

The result is “Anuja,” a 22-minute short about two sisters working in a back-alley garment factory. The narrative follows the young protagonist as she faces a decision that will impact both her future and her family. Mindy Kaling said she will often get sent coming-of-age stories about young South Asian women in her capacity as founder of the production company Kaling International. But she doesn’t always put her name behind something if it’s not the right fit. Fortunately, Kaling had no such issues with Anuja, the Oscar-nominated short film from director Adam J. Graves and producer Suchitra Mattai.

“I just fell in love with it,” Kaling said in a recent interview with the filmmakers (watch it below). “The way that you could tell the story in 22 minutes was just really incredible.”

But what separated Anuja from other projects, Kaling said, is its hopeful message amid difficult circumstances for the main characters, two sisters, aged 9 and 17, who work in a back-alley garment factory.

“The situations that the characters are in as literal child laborers are upsetting, but there is such a surprising joyfulness [about how the story is told],” said Kaling.

Being a self-proclaimed “minor” art collector, Mindy Kaling was excited when a short film titled Anuja — directed by Adam J. Graves in collaboration with his wife, South Asian artist Suchitra Mattai — came across her desk at her production company Kaling International. “I really love South Asian art, and Suchitra is huge in that field,” Kaling tells The Hollywood Reporter. Kaling has a range of producer credits from TV shows like The Office, The Mindy Project and Never Have I Ever to such films as Late Night and documentaries including To Kill a Tiger, but she’d never produced a short film (save for Michael Scott’s Threat Level Midnight featured in The Office, which Kaling jokingly calls her “proudest producer reel accomplishment”).

“I don’t know much about short film, to be honest,” Kaling says. “And the connotations that I’d had for short films were that they’re pretty serious.

2025 looks like a bleak year for the leading ladies, at least in Hindi cinema. Worldwide, too, the really brawny ladies are hardly poised to shine this year: Meryl Streep has no release this year, while her desi counterpart Shabana Azmi will be shining on the Ott platform in Farhan Akhtar’s Dabba Cartel. Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Katrina Kaif have zero releases this year. Put simply, there are no big Shero films coming up in 2025.

There are exceptions, though.

Tunisian director Lotfi Achour’s Red Path won the Yusr Award for best competition film and the best director honor at the fourth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival (Rsiff) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia during its Thursday evening awards ceremony that also saw Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Viola Davis being honored.

The Silver Yusr Feature Film Award went to Mahdi Fleifel’s To A Land Unknown, a drama about young Palestinians caught in an eternal state of exile. Tunisian drama Red Path, directed by Lotfi Achour, scooped the Golden Yusr for best film and the prize for best director at the 4th Red Sea International Film Festival on Thursday (December 12).

The main award was presented by jury head and Oscar-winning US filmmaker Spike Lee at a ceremony in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The drama was among 15 titles from the Middle East, Africa, and, for the first time, Asia competing for the festival’s Yusrs awards.

Red Path, which world premiered at Locarno, revolves around a shepherd boy who is traumatized when his teenager cousin is beheaded by Islamic State terrorists in front of him. He brings the head back to his family, but recovering the teenage boy’s body becomes a challenge with the terrorists remaining a threat in the backdrop.

Like Citadel: Diana, the new Citadel spinoff, Citadel: Honey Bunny, arrives to little fanfare but significant results. The original was a bloated, massive miss for critics and fans alike. However, “from the Russo Brothers” stamp of approval still means something to fans and Hollywood in general, attracting stars from all over the globe.

The next chapter in the Prime Video spy saga, Citadel: Honey Bunny, is one hell of a ride. Of course, this version doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the original or even the Italian sequel. Not to mention big-name global stars like Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden. Yet, the series has its own style and attitude, which is all its own.
