Born in Mullens, West Virginia, US as Christy Renea Salters and known professionally as the Coal Miner's Daughter, Christy Martin is an American former professional boxer, widely considered to be the most successful and prominent female boxer in the United States. Before going into boxing, she played Little League baseball and all-state basketball. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia. In 1989, aged 21, Martin began her boxing career, immediately becoming successful, but it was her 1996 match against Deirdre Gogarty that really put her on the map. She won 49 out of her 59 matches before being introduced into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. She was married to her trainer Jim Martin for many years, before the relationship ended with her husband's attempted murder of her. Since 2017, she's been married to a fellow boxer Lisa Holewyne.
