Betty Gilpin Mourns And Celebrates ‘Glow’ After Netflix Cancellation
Image
Betty Gilpin said that acting in Glow was “the best job I’ll ever have.”

On Wednesday, the actress who stars as Debbie Eagan in the now-cancelled wrestling comedy, wrote a eulogy in Vanity Fair mourning and celebrating the show created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mesch.

“Glow was cancelled. I am sad. It was the best job I’ll ever have. Our business is a strange mix of attempting childhood dreams to a room full of asleep people and shirking dignity for awake tomato-throwers for rent. This was one of those extremely rare times where we got to do the dream for awake people,” she wrote.

In her essay, Gilpin went on to say how the Netflix show gave her some much-needed stability after hopping from one acting stint to another. The breakthrough, however wouldn’t have been possible without Flahive and Mensch, she continued.

“But there were two...

Matthew Weiner
Matthew Weiner’s ‘Mad Men’ Production Team Reunites for ‘The Romanoffs’
Matthew Weiner
When Matthew Weiner planned his next project, there was never a question in his mind: He wanted to get the gang back together.

After all, the creator of the acclaimed drama “Mad Men” is renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, and indeed that series won multiple trophies for every aspect of its production. So when he conceived of “The Romanoffs,” Amazon’s new anthology series about characters who claim to be descendants of the legendary Russian royal family, the first calls he made were to the skilled artisans who shaped “Mad Men,” from casting and production design to costume and hair and makeup.

“They are the best at what they do,” says Weiner, who wrote and directed every episode. “It’s not just a friendship. It’s a matter of trust, and a matter of respect.”

But this time, instead of painstakingly depicting advertising culture in New York in the 1960s,...

‘Glow’ Hair And Makeup Designers Discuss Crafting “Homemade” Looks For The Wrestling Ring
Jackie Tohn, Alison Brie, Sydelle Noel, Kia Stevens, Betty Gilpin, Kate Nash, Britney Young, and Gayle Rankin in GLOW (2017)
An iconic women’s wrestling series of the ’80s, Glow (Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling) is remembered for its big, frizzy hair, glittery eye makeup and a charmingly scrappy aesthetic—the colorful visual choices it made with its characters. Bringing the Ladies into the comedy arena with Netflix’s Glow, series creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch were always going to bump up against the legacy of the original series, with the need for hair and makeup that would do it justice.

Enter Theraesa Rivers and Lana Horochowski, experts in period work—known for projects including Mad Men and The Last Tycoon—who could pull from their own childhood memories to portray ’80s stylings in a nuanced fashion. While the ’80s was a relatively easy decade to tackle, thinking back on their previous period efforts, the collaborators had to figure out how to design with the action of the wrestling ring in mind,...

Glow: 6 Things to Know About Netflix's Lady-Wrestling Comedy
Jackie Tohn, Alison Brie, Sydelle Noel, Kia Stevens, Betty Gilpin, Kate Nash, Britney Young, and Gayle Rankin in GLOW (2017)
Yes, Netflix’s Glow provides a funny, albeit fictional, behind-the-scenes look into the rise of the 1980s phenomenon known as Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Yes, it features comedic heavy hitters like Alison Brie (Community) and Marc Maron (Maron) sporting some truly fantastic period costumes. And yes, the show’s pedigreed production team includes Orange Is the New Black‘s Carly Mensch and Nurse Jackie‘s Liz Flahive, as well as Oitnb‘s Jenji Kohan.

But Glow also provided a vital lesson to its cast, courtesy of the hands-on training the actors underwent prior to the shoot.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' leads Makeup and Hairstylists Guild nominations
Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, and Dave Bautista in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards.
