Gogoia Sampaio
- Costume Designer
Gogoia Sampaio was born in Rio de Janeiro on the 18th of Janaury, 1968. Daughter of the first black woman film-maker Adelia Sampaio and journalist Pedro Porfirio, Gogoia grew up, in the midst of the Brazilian dictatorship, accompanying her mother to movie sets and theatre backstages - falling in love with every facet of the ludic universe of entertainment and, above all, with the art of costume design.
She started working at TV Globo in 1990, where she created countless costumes for soap operas, miniseries, and holiday specials - audiovisual projects with aesthetics very different from one another. Some of the projects she worked on were nominated or won international awards such as the Emmy International Award and the Seoul Drama Awards. She was also nominated and/or won countless Brazilian awards specifically for her costume design creations, and in 2018, was invited to participate in the Cannes Film Festival as a judge in the category of Special Projects for Social Media in GSF Awards, Global Short Film Awards. Some of her costume creations were so iconic that they had a definite influence on the trajectory of the projects' characters, increasing the shows' popularity to the point of truly becoming Brazilian phenomena.
Besides her work as a costume designer, with more than XXX aired soap operas and miniseries, Gogoia created and developed an acclaimed reality show called "Como Manda o Figurino" where she paid tribute to some of the greatest characters and costume designs in Brazilian Television. She also has her signature costume designs in some Brazilian plays.
Her well-known passion for new challenges made her work go beyond the world of fiction: she started sharing tips on the internet not only about fashion, textures, colors, beauty, and style but also about how to live life in a more easy-going and humorous way. Eventually, she launched "BR Confidencial", her own lifestyle and fashion website/blog that now influences and encourages the next generations that dream of working in the world of costume design.
As the daughter of activists, she believes in projects with purpose and meaning and that are geared towards a more social and human perspective. Always focused on the aesthetic universe, Gogoia collaborated on a jewelry line where the profit was destined to help the "Retiro dos Artistas", a Brazilian NGO that fosters retired artists who don't have a home. Moreover, during the Pandemic, she developed a capsule clothing collection where the profit was redirected to help unemployed costume design professionals.
She is currently trying to expand her knowledge beyond the world of costume design, investing in documentary and dramaturgy projects such as a documentary series that showcases the strength of women while exploring their manual skills intertwined with the art of the feminine.
