David Lynch, the director who did as much as anyone to introduce absurdism and surrealism into mainstream North American movies, died on Thursday. He was 78.
Lynch has been delighting and confounding audiences since his first feature, Eraserhead, which he began developing as a film student at the American Film Institute prior to its 1977 release. Subsequent works include The Elephant Man and the original film version of Dune in the early 1980s. Then he scored his major triumph with Blue Velvet in 1986. It was still wildly bizarre but mainstream enough to secure him an Oscar nomination for Best Director. (He had previously been nominated forElephant Man.)
He would follow Blue Velvet with the groundbreaking TV series Twin Peaks, which helped usher in the age of elevated television. Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire would be the end of his theatrically-released feature film career in 2006. But Lynch continued to produce content in a variety of forms.

We have some very sad news to report today, as the family of David Lynch has taken to social media to confirm that the legendary filmmaker, who would have turned 79 on January 20th, has passed away. His family wrote, “It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of the man and the artist, David Lynch. We would appreciate some privacy at this time. There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us. But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.“
Just last year, Lynch revealed that he was homebound and on oxygen due to emphysema – but that didn’t mean he had any intention of retiring. Although Lynch hadn’t directed a feature film since Inland Empire in 2006, but...

David Lynch, the visionary filmmaker behind Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks, is opening up about the lifelong smoking habit that has left him facing serious health challenges.
The 77-year-old director, who started smoking at the age of 8 and only quit at 76, now requires supplemental oxygen for any physical activity beyond walking across a room.
Lynch was diagnosed with emphysema in 2020, a condition that severely affects his ability to breathe.

“In the back of every smoker’s mind is the fact that it’s healthy, so you’re literally playing with fire,” Lynch told People. “It can bite you. I took a chance, and I got bit.”
Despite his diagnosis, Lynch didn’t quit cigarettes immediately. “I saw the writing on the wall, and it said, ‘You’re going to die in a week if you don’t stop,...

Filmmaker David Lynch and his fourth wife, actress Emily Stofle, have filed for divorce after 14 years of marriage.
They met while shooting his 2006 film, Inland Empire. They married in February 2009, two years after his divorce with fellow director Mary Sweeney.
Previous to Sweeny, Lynch was married to Peggy Lunch from 1967 to 1974. Later, he married Mary Fisk, and they were married from 1977 to 1987.
Stofle was also in Lynch’s limited series Peaks: The Return in 2017.
The 45-year-old actress initiated the divorce and made several demands on her petition.
The split has reportedly not been amicable, as Stofle has asked the court to grant sole legal and physical custody of their 11-year-old daughter, Lula Lynch.
She is agreeable with Lynch having visitation rights to their daughter.
She wants Lynch to cover the cost of her attorneys’ fees and to pay her spousal support.
He has three other children from his previous marriages: Jennifer Lynch,...

David Lynch’s gift to his fans, on his 74th birthday today, is a peculiar and hilarious 17-minute short film titled “What Did Jack Do?”, which debuted on Netflix with a very enticing one-sentence synopsis: “In a locked down train station, a homicide detective conducts an interview with a tormented monkey.”
Shot in grainy black-and-white, reminiscent of classic movies of yesteryear, and Lynch’s own 1977 feature film debut, “Eraserhead,” the short film features Lynch playing a detective, interrogating the “Jack” in the title about a murder investigation, in the typical darkened, windowless interrogation room. The twist? Jack is a suited small monkey that actually speaks.
As you’d expect from Lynch, it’s quite bizarre and unsettling, but also very funny, whether intentional or not.
It’s an oddity of a film that Netflix categorizes as a crime drama, but it really can’t be adequately put into words, and...

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. It's James Hurley's (James Marshall) birthday and he wants a present. Not that he's demanding it—no, no. James is cool. He's always been cool. So in that affable way of his that can be equal parts endearing and insufferable, he asks his going-on-23-year-old coworker, Freddie Sykes (Jake Wardle)—a U.K. to U.S. transplant who, like James, is a security guard at the Great Northern Hotel—to explain why he's always wearing a green gardener's glove on his right hand. "Tell me the story," he says to Freddie. The young man obliges the birthday boy with a captivating tale ("you ain't gonna believe me anyway," he prefaces) of a man in the sky called The Fireman, who told him to buy the glove,...

Nope, no Audrey Horne on Twin Peaks this week. I think the solution to her ever-deepening mystery won’t be wrapped up for at least a few more episodes. And for the record, I do not believe she is an actress or somehow trapped inside the soap opera “Invitation To Love” from the original series. I mean, c’mon, think about it, that makes no sense. She’s an actress in a soap opera playing a character with her own name? A soap opera that references events taking place in her hometown? That’s completely absurd (right??). That theory is...

The new "Twin Peaks" isn't slated to debut on Showtime until 2017, but a flurry of speculation about it happened last week with a tweet from Go For Locations indicating that filming had wrapped on the "first two seasons" of the series.
The episode count for the David Lynch-directed series was always in question, but that tweet suggested we'd be getting even more episodes than originally planned. Said tweet has since been deleted, so we'll have to wait to see how that pans out.
in the meantime in more official news, Showtime, Lynch and Mark Frost has released the official cast list for the new series with a whopping 217 names across the various episodes - a list that includes some real surprise big name inclusions such as Monica Bellucci, Michael Cera, Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Eddie Vedder, Ashley Judd, Ernie Hudson, Jim Belushi, Richard Chamberlain, Laura Dern,...
