Back in 2009, the German-Australian sibling duo of Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig, a.k.a. The Spierig Brothers, brought us the sci-fi action horror vampire film Daybreakers – and now, the Australia-based company Umbrella Home Entertainment is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the film by giving it a 4K and Blu-ray collector’s edition release! Copies are available for purchase at This Link.
The plot the Spierig Brothers crafted for Daybreakers has the following synopsis: Ten years after a plague turns most of the world’s population into vampires, a critical blood shortage causes panic and gruesome mutations among the reanimated. Edward, a vampire hematologist, tries to develop a blood substitute when he meets Lionel and Audrey, two fugitive humans who claim to have a possible cure. Edward casts his lot with them in the hope of perfecting the cure before it’s too late.

(Welcome to Year of the Vampire, a series examining the greatest, strangest, and sometimes overlooked vampire movies of all time in honor of "Nosferatu," which turns 100 this year.)
Vampire movies have been a part of cinema for a long, long time. Sure, a great many of those movies center on your classic "Dracula in a cape," and at times, that can be great. But vampire flicks that go a little bit outside the box have always been a little bit more my speed.
Such is the case with "Daybreakers," an ambitious, kind of crazy mid-size movie that has largely slipped through the cracks in the years since its release. I'm here to propose that we absolutely should not let it slip away entirely.
Directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, aka the Spierig brothers, the film takes place a decade after a plague turns most of the world's population into vampires.

Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke star in this haunted house horror that’s based on the true story of The Winchester Mystery House. It’s directed by the Spierig Brothers, the German-born Australian directing duo whose previous films include 2014′s time-loop sci-fi Predestination and the recent Saw reboot, Jigsaw.
Set in San Francisco in 1906 (which ought to give history buffs something of a heads-up), Winchester centres on the true story of Sarah Winchester (Helen Mirren), the widow of the inventor of the Winchester repeating rifle and heir to the company’s vast fortune. Wracked with guilt over all the deaths her company has caused and haunted by their spirits, Sarah has devoted her widowhood to building a continually expanding mansion,...

To be fair to the Saw movies, it was no surprise that they would eventually bring it back; and when Jigsaw was announced, one of the main questions had to be how to bring back John Kramer (Tobin Bell)? If he was brought back at all? Well now we have our answer…
When bodies start turning up around the city, it seems that Jigsaw may have returned. With him being dead though, is it the work of a copycat, or has Kramer somehow returned from the grave ten years after his reign of terror?

The reviews for Winchester are in, and it looks like Helen Mirren’s new horror movie is a complete and total misfire. It’s directed by identical twin brothers Peter and Michael Spierig, who previously helmed the highly underrated 2014 thriller, Predestination. They followed that up with last year’s disappointingly blah-tastic Saw franchise sequel, Jigsaw, and unfortunately, it looks like Winchester has more in common with their more recent effort.

Even though it’s located about six hours north of where I currently reside, I admittedly knew very little about the Winchester Mystery House prior to last week, which is when Daily Dead attended a special tour of one of the most haunted houses in America, alongside Michael and Peter Spierig. The duo recently celebrated the debut of the new trailer for their upcoming supernatural horror project, Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built, which stars Oscar-winner Helen Mirren, Jason Clarke, and Sarah Snook (who the directors recently collaborated with on Predestination), and the filmmakers were eager to head inside and talk more about the lengths they went to in order to stay true to who they believed Sarah Winchester was, and her passion for turning Winchester into one of the most perplexing properties in history.

Lionsgate’s “Jigsaw” carved up $1.6 million at the Thursday previews at more than 2,400 locations. “Jigsaw” picks up several years after “Saw 3D,” with signs of Jigsaw’s deadly traps starting to reappear, hinting that someone is continuing the grisly legacy of John Kramer. Peter and Michael Spierig are directing from a script by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger. 2010’s “Saw 3D” earned $1.7 million at the Thursday previews before it went on to gross $22 million its opening weekend. “Jigsaw,” however, is only expected to make somewhere in the high-teens to $20 million range. The question with a movie like “Jigsaw,” which was preceded by seven “Saw” movies and did not screen for press, isn’t “Is it good?” but rather “How bad is it?” The answer, dear reader, is “quite.” “Jigsaw” is quite bad.
Not that it matters much. The eighth installment in a horror franchise isn’t meant to be good; it’s meant to be gruesome. The Spierig Brothers’ contribution to the series is certainly that: One scene finds a team of medical examiners studiously examining a man with half his head blown off; another shows the results of a woman being injected with hydrochloric acid in all its gory detail. 13 years in, the filmmakers have all but given up pretending that such moments exist for any reason beyond their own sake.

Smt Heads, you know there’s been a time when you wanted people to drop dead. But, given the mayhem in Epic Pictures’ upcoming Sci-Fi horror fest, “Radius,” maybe you’d need to make sure there was an off switch! Check out the Trailer right now (and don’t skip the pre-trailer for “Flint” while you’re at it):
Liam (Diego Klattenhoff) wakes from a car crash at the bottom of a deep ditch with no memory of who he is. As he makes his way into town, he discovers that anyone who comes within a 50-foot radius of him dies instantly. Out of options, he tries to live in seclusion to protect others, until the day a woman comes up to him and doesn’t die in his presence. With her arrival, Liam’s murderous power now seems to have subsided. The woman, Jane (Charlotte Sullivan), is also amnesiac and looking for answers.

The Saw franchise comes back to life with Jigsaw. So: business as usual?
“You think it's over just because I am dead... The games have just begun.” That quote pretty much sums up the four Saw films that followed the gruesome demise of Tobin Bell’s John Kramer, which closed out Saw III. For four Halloweens in a row, writers used every trick they could to keep the series going post-Jigsaw-autopsy. They finally wrapped it up with the seventh flick in the franchise, 2010’s Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, which gave longtime fans of the series a satisfying point to end on: Cary Elwes returned as Doctor Gordon from the first film, putting an end to Jiggy’s last apprentice standing, the murdery Detective Hoffman played by Costas Mandylor. The games, at last, seemed to actually be over. But here we are, seven years later, with Jigsaw. A...

The games, at last, seemed to actually be over. But here we are, seven years later, with Jigsaw. A...

Built by Sarah Winchester, (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. Are you ready for Jigsaw?
It is, in essence, the eighth entry into Lionsgate’s time-honored Saw franchise, one that’s coming by way of directing duo Michael and Peter Spierig. Best known for their work on Daybreakers, the Spierig siblings are still relatively new when it comes to Hollywood’s horror scene, but when asked to describe how they approached the cult series, Michael Spierig hinted that Jigsaw is “Saw for 2017.” That means it’s safe to expect more nightmare fuel and wildly inventive demented traps than you can shake a pig’s mask at, and though Lionsgate’s franchise has fallen by the wayside in recent years, in 2017, Halloween belongs to Jigsaw. And long may he reign.
Mind you, given that Tobin Bell’s sick, twisted psychopath bit the bullet in Saw III, it looks certain that John Kramer has gathered together a band of disciples to continue...

Ahead of Jigsaw’s release, we chatted to John Kramer actor Tobin Bell about his journey with the franchise...
Warning: this interview contains spoilers for several Saw films, and one for Four Corners, but it’s spoiler-free with regards to Jigsaw.
The Saw franchise began, back in 2004, with Tobin Bell’s John Kramer – aka The Jigsaw Killer - playing dead on the floor of a grimy bathroom. Leigh Whannell and James Wan’s micro-budget horror/thriller spawned six blood-spattered sequels, birthing a franchise that became synonymous with Halloween cinema trips.
But then, in 2010, came Saw 3D. The seventh film in the torture-stuffed series presented itself as The Final Chapter, going full circle - revisiting the bathroom from Saw - and tying up all the loose ends of John’s legacy. John died in Saw III and was autopsied in Saw IV, and then Saw 3D presented a...

The Saw franchise will be returning to our cinemas this Halloween, with the first trailer for ‘Jigsaw’ out, meaning that ‘Saw 3D: The Final Chapter’ is no longer the final chapter…
The film picks up about 10 years later than the apparent death (in ‘Saw III’) of the Jigsaw Killer, John Kramer (Tobin Bell). New, gruesome murders are being discovered around the city, with the evidence from the investigation pointing to Jigsaw. The question is who is this killer? Is Jigsaw still alive or is there a copycat? It is something for the police to figure out.
Michael Spierig, one of the directors, has said that this outing will be more fun and less vicious compared to the previous films:

The first trailer has been released for the Saw sequel Jigsaw and if you're a fan of the Saw franchise, you're gonna love it. As you might expect, the trailer shows off lots of new and inventive ways of torturing and killing people. I've gotta say, it would be a complete nightmare to be in the situation that these characters find themselves in.
Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade.
Jigsaw was directed by German filmmaking brothers Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, of the films Undead, Daybreakers, and Predestination. Lionsgate will release the film on October 27th, just in time for Halloween.

Remember when Jigsaw co-director Michael Spierig (Daybreakers) promised some “pretty wild traps” ahead of October’s Saw sequel?
Well, thanks to the film’s blood-curdling first trailer, we now have an idea of the horrors in store, and it seems as though the twisted legacy of John Kramer has taken on a new form. Tobin Bell’s demented serial killer actually bit the bullet during Saw III in 2006, so Michael and Peter Spierig have been quick to play down talk of Bell returning – either via flashback or some form of unexpected appearance. That doesn’t necessarily mean that a cameo is completely out of the question though – the film is called Jigsaw, after all – particularly when you consider the fact that John Kramer’s voice can be heard in today’s first-look teaser. “The truth will set you free.”
From there, the nightmare-inducing footage cuts to some form of containment...

Throughout the years there has always been franchises in horror who dominate the the genre. For example, we have Freddy in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Chucky in Child's Play and Jason in Friday the 13th. Besides franchises like The Conjuring, the most dominating horror franchise has to be Saw. It's very interesting that James Wan had a part in creating both of them. The first film earned over $100 million worldwide on a budget of only $1.2 million, this spawned six sequels to this day.
The not so secret to making these films successful was to follow the path of the first Saw film, which was to keep the budget low. When Saw VI only made $70 million, it was Ok because it only cost $11 million to make. The last film that the franchise released, Saw 3D, had really bad critical and fan reception. The title for the eighth outing in the Saw franchise has finally been revealed as Jigsaw, which sees Lionsgate dropping the production of Saw: Legacy.
It had been revealed years ago by the franchise creators, James Wan and Leigh Whannell that in fact, the original title was Jigsaw, does this mean that the franchise is paying homage to its roots? Well, according to the Lionsgate synopsis we can expect to see bodies turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?
Directed by Peter and Michael Spierig, the cast for the eighth film in the franchise includes Mandela Van Peebles, Laura Vandervoort, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Bolsvert, and James Gomez. The original Jigsaw, Tobin Bell is said to be returning to the series but in what capacity hasn’t been made clear at this point.
In his signature black and red robes, Jigsaw was a former civil engineer dying from an inoperable frontal lobe tumour that had developed from colon cancer. After a failed suicide attempt, Kramer found a new appreciation for his life and decided to dedicate the rest of his life to inspiring the same appreciation in others by testing their will to live.
His methods include forcing his subjects through deadly scenarios, which he referred to as “games” or “tests”, in which they were forced to inflict pain upon themselves or others in order to escape. These tests were typically symbolic of what Jigsaw perceived as a flaw in each person’s moral character or life. The Jigsaw name was given to him by the media for his practice of cutting a puzzle piece shape of flesh from those who fail.
Jigsaw is due to be released in October 2017

It’s been over a year since we reported that there were rumors about a new Saw movie floating around, supposedly with the title Saw: Legacy. Now, Lionsgate has confirmed that it’s making a another Saw (the first one since Saw 3D: The Final Chapter a full seven years ago), and it will officially be called Jigsaw. As anyone who has survived the cruel puzzles of the Saw series probably recalls, Jigsaw is the serial killer name used by Tobin Bell’s character in the original movies. So it seems fairly safe to assume that he—or someone capitalizing off of his successful murder brand—will be running a series of twisted games again.
Variety says that Jigsaw will be directed by Daybreakers directors Peter and Michael Spierig, and it will be in theaters on October 27 of this year. You can see the film’s logo above.
