Thanks to a comic book spin-off, the greatest possible sequel to Krampus is just waiting to be adapted into a feature film. Nearly a decade after the 2015 horror film was released, fans still look back on the original, wondering why nothing more came from the incredibly creative holiday film.
The 2015 film by Michael Dougherty focused on a small family whose Christmas spirit was long gone, causing them to be visited by Santa Claus' malevolent companion, Krampus. The movie was a hit among fans everywhere, but despite acclaim from fans and critics, as well as a decent box office showing, the film stands alone. However, there's another tale in the Krampus universe, and it would make for the perfect sequel.

Krampus Finally Answers the One Question Everyone Has Been Asking About the Movie's Ambiguous Ending
Warning! Spoilers ahead Krampus!Fans can finally put this issue to bed, because Krampus' tie-in comic gives an official answer to the film's open ending. The 2015 horror/comedy has become a holiday staple for many, but the final shot of the movie has spurred debates among many. Thankfully, the lesser-known 'sidequel' gives fans all the answers they want.
In Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas by Todd Casey, Michael Doughtery, Zach Shields, Laura Shields, Christian Diabari, Maan House, Stuart Sayger, and Michael Montenat, three individuals are visited by Santa's sinister companion, who puts them all through trials that help them find the Christmas spirit.
Thankfully, just like Max and his family in the film, each of these individuals learn the lesson they need to. As they celebrate the holiday with a renewed sense of life and purpose, they all find the same gift, a bell left by the Krampus to remind them he's still watching.

It's true that plenty of sci-fi movies are more plot-heavy than character-driven, but that doesn't mean that the best additions to the genre don't include complex and well-developed characters. However, in most movies, not just speculative fiction, there are sometimes scenes that fit in well with the plot but end up undermining the arc of an otherwise well-written character. Though this doesn't take away the other moments that exemplify the character's nuanced and complex emotions and motivation, it does give the viewer pause and make them wonder why these scenes are included.
Occasionally, these characters' moments give great sci-fi movies disappointing endings since what happens to the characters is typically the most emotionally compelling piece of a story. Many of these characters are portrayed by brilliant actors who balance the contradictions within their roles and make them work within the narrative. Whether these scenes are throwaway moments meant to be...

MonsterVerse is one of the most interesting cinematic universes out of all of them. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures-owned franchise has earned over $2.5 billion worldwide and also consists of TV shows on different streaming services but the way it all came together is a bit iffy because of the rights issues and the general laziness that we see in the some of the MonsterVerse films, but still Godzilla vs. Kong is still one of the most iconic movies for me. The bungling of Trick ‘r Treat by Warner Bros. — shelving it after well-received festival screenings before unceremoniously dumping it straight to DVD in 2009 — is well-documented, but had it received a traditional theatrical release and underperformed, there’s a chance it may have never entered the cultural zeitgeist. Instead, its authentic cult roots allowed it to blossom into the contemporary classic we celebrate today.
Trick ‘r Treat stands alongside the opening credits of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers as a felicitous distillation of the Halloween atmosphere on celluloid. Sam, the impish demon played by 7-year-old Quinn Lord that serves as the film’s mascot, personifies the tricks and treats of Halloween while serving as the connective tissue between segments.

Director Mike Dougherty has been slowly pushing forward Trick ‘r Treat 2, the long-awaited sequel to his horror anthology film Trick ‘r Treat (watch it Here). Two years ago, he said the sequel is in “very active development“ and last year he mentioned that there is a “really great script” in place that he wrote with his Krampus collaborators Zach Shields and Todd Casey. He also revealed that the new film will give Trick ‘r Treat’s little icon Sam a “proper nemesis” to face off with. So what’s taking this movie so long to get into production? On the new Trick ‘r Treat 4K Ultra HD edition — out today from Arrow Video — writer-director Michael Dougherty provides an update on the long-gestating sequel, first announced all the way back in 2013.
In a new commentary moderated by Dead Meat’s James A. Janisse and Chelsea Rebecca, Doughtery confirms that he wrote Trick ‘r Treat 2 with his Krampus collaborators Todd Casey and Zach Shields and it’s already storyboarded, but getting it made within the studio system is complicated.
“It’s tricky, because I think we really did capture lightning in a bottle with this one, and it nearly killed me. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the bulk of our favorite horror movies, especially the ones that introduced new horror icons, were all independent movies,” Dougherty explains, citing the likes of Halloween, Friday the 13th, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Hollywood star Ryan Gosling is known for his charismatic presence on and off the screen and has captivated audiences with a diverse range of memorable roles throughout his career. However, before gaining recognition for his performances in films like The Notebook and Barbie, the actor embodied another iconic character in a TV series, Young Hercules.

Updated, 8:40 Am: “I saw you once, Maddie Schwartz. Before any of this began, I saw you. Alive…I was Cleo Johnson, but in my death, I became the Lady in the Lake,” says Moses Ingram’s Cleo in a voiceover at the beginning of the trailer for Apple limited series Lady in the Lake.
Natalie Portman stars as Maddie Schwartz, a Jewish housewife seeking to shed a secret past and reinvent herself as an investigative journalist, alongside Ingram’s Cleo Johnson, a mother navigating the political underbelly of Black Baltimore while struggling to provide for her family. Their disparate lives seem parallel at first, but when Maddie becomes fixated on Cleo’s mystifying death, a chasm opens that puts everyone around them in danger, per the official synopis.
Also starring in the series are Y’lan Noel, Brett Gelman, Byron Bowers, Noah Jupe, Josiah Cross, Mikey Madison and Pruitt Taylor Vince.

The last time I spoke to Noah Jupe was four years ago when he was just 15 years old. It was over Zoom, and he was promoting HBO’s “The Undoing” from a Detroit hotel room, where he was under mandatory quarantine waiting to be cleared to start work on Steven Soderbergh’s “No Sudden Move.”
At the time, Jupe’s list of credits already included “The Night Manager,” “Suburbicon,” the first two “A Quiet Place” films and “Ford v Ferrari.” He had earned a Spirit Award nomination for his work starring role in “Honey Boy,” director Alma Har’el’s drama loosely based on Shia Labeouf’s childhood.
The British actor is now 19 and I’m meeting him once again over Zoom — this time, he’s in his London-area home — for this week’s “Just for Variety” podcast. He’s promoting Apple TV+’s “Franklin.” The limited series follows Benjamin Franklin,...

The subgenre of "Christmas movies" has been a curious one of late. While new movies set during the holiday season or others explicitly concerning it are released every year (especially holiday horror), it feels like we haven't gotten a new classic, gotta-watch-this-every-year holiday movie in a while. That's because, in all honesty, most classics aren't made, they're grown; it takes a few years for most films to prove their durability, and some that are overlooked upon their initial release get rediscovered and slowly morph into seasonal staples.
Filmmaker Michael Dougherty is intimately familiar with this process, as it's happened to him at least twice with two movies about two different holidays. His anthology of Halloween hijinks, 2007's "Trick 'r Treat," barely got a theatrical release before word of mouth allowed it to gain a cult reputation strong enough that a sequel has been rumored for years, and may actually happen.

Fans have been waiting 14 years for director Michael Dougherty to get around to making a sequel to his Halloween-themed horror anthology Trick ‘r Treat, but Dougherty has stayed busy as the years have gone by, making the Christmas-themed horror film Krampus, directing Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and contributing to the scripts for X-Men: Apocalypse, Godzilla vs. Kong, and the upcoming Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Recently, there have been indications that a Trick ‘r Treat 2 might finally be moving forward. Dougherty has even said the screenplay has been written. But while he pushes that sequel toward production, he has revealed to Collider that he has an idea for Krampus 2 as well.
Dougherty told them, “We have an idea for a sequel on that one, too. It doesn’t necessarily center around a family as much as it might be about a group of strangers who are trapped somewhere.

Making a movie that turns into a holiday classic is no easy task. What's even harder is to make a classic so primed to be turned into a franchise as "Trick 'r Treat" and just ... stop after one movie. Although it was originally meant to arrive in theaters in October of 2007, Warner Bros. pushed back Michael Dougherty's directorial debut indefinitely. After a successful run at genre film festivals around the world, "Trick 'r Treat" ended up getting unceremoniously dumped two years later on home video. It wasn't until 2022 that the film even got a proper theatrical release.
Still, the film has endured as a staple of Halloween, with fans eager to learn about Dougherty's plans for a sequel — which has been a long time coming. Now, we finally have some solid information that not only is "Trick 'r Treat 2" still happening, but there's been genuine progress in its development.

It’s Time for Our Annual ‘Trick ‘r Treat 2’ Update; Michael Dougherty Teases a “Really Great Script”
The legend of Trick ‘r Treat has only grown and grown in the years since its original release in 2007, with Michael Dougherty’s seasonal anthology becoming something of a holiday horror classic. Sam is of course at the center of the property as a true Halloween icon, with various toys, costumes and decorations filling up stores like Spirit Halloween every October.
But while the world of Trick ‘r Treat has been expanded upon with various comics, we’ve still never gotten the sequel we’ve been waiting over 15 years for. It’s become an annual tradition to get an update on the status of the project each and every October, with Dougherty revealing at Beyond Fest just last year that Trick ‘r Treat 2 was in “very active development” at the time.

The Barbie movie was released in July 2023, but it remains one of the hottest films in the world. An unexpected hit for director Greta Gerwig, Barbie is a revisionist feminist fantasy that offers up a new take on the iconic doll that defined so many people’s childhoods. While Margot Robbie plays the doll herself, rocking the screen in a succession of incredible outfits, she’s supported by a full cast of talented stars, including Ryan Gosling as her counterpart Ken. Gosling’s primary contribution to the film is a hilarious song that has not only earned him a place as one of the year’s fan favorites, but a spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart as well.

Michael Cera and Ryan Gosling star in the biggest movie of the summer, "Barbie," and both have received rave reviews as the magnificently neutral Allan and the insecure Ken, respectively. Gosling, in particular, has made waves for his blockbuster performance of the song "I'm Just Ken," which allows him to show off his dance skills and impressive vocal range. Unfortunately, Cera's Allan doesn't get to show off his vocal skills, which is a shame because Cera actually has a very nice voice, and he's used it to make some pretty solid indie folk music.
As it turns out, both Cera and Gosling have produced impressive indie music projects over the years. Cera released his debut album, "True That," in 2014, and it's a soft, wistful, lo-fi folk project that garnered generally positive reviews and comparisons to the likes of Elliot Smith. Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" centers around the iconic doll (Margot Robbie) trying to find her human owner in the real world in hopes that it will stop her from further malfunctioning. While Ken (Ryan Gosling) plays a big part in the film, his goal is much simpler: to get noticed by Barbie. After failing to do so several times, Ken sings his frustrations out in a ballad called "I'm Just Ken" during the film's climax. The song is all about feeling like he'll never be good enough for Barbie with lyrics like, "Doesn't seem to matter what I do. I'm always number two."
Since some actors don't actually provide their own vocals in movies, you may have left the theater wondering whether Gosling actually sings in "Barbie." Let's dive into it.

Ryan Gosling is, to most people, a famous actor. He’s well-known for his roles in movies like The Notebook, Lars and the Real Girl, and Blue Valentine. Versatile and low-key, Gosling has given equal attention to blockbusters and independent films. Interestingly enough, Gosling has had a lesser-known career in music. While he’s remained self-deprecating about his own musical talents, some know of the artist known as “Baby Goose.”

This is the latest high-profile TV role for Ingram, who is fresh off her starring turn in the Disney+ “Star Wars” series “Obi-Wan Kenobi.” Ingram is also known for appearing in the hit Netflix show “The Queen’s Gambit,” for which she received an Emmy nomination for best supporting actress in a limited series. As someone who adores holiday horror stories and firmly believes Michael Dougherty's Krampus is one of the best movies released in the 2010s, I'm thrilled that Scream Factory's 4K / Blu-ray release of Legendary Entertainment and Universal Pictures’ Krampus: The Naughty Cut (coming out on December 7th) is absolutely brimming with special features, including a bevy of new interviews, a fresh Dolby Atmos track, and additional scenes for fans to unwrap:

Talk about shooting under the gun. When long-time collaborators and friends Joshua Leonard and Jess Weixler teamed up to make their latest film together, “Fully Realized Humans,” there was one major concern to build their scrappy seven-day shoot around: Weixler was eight months pregnant at the time. Fortunately, the duo wrapped in time and Weixler welcomed her first child just a few weeks later.
Weixler’s pregnancy, of course, plays a major role in the duo’s latest feature, which follows the pair as a pair of well-meaning parents-to-be who suddenly realize they might not be totally ready to welcome a bouncing bundle of joy into their lives, at least not as they currently stand.
Intent on shaking off any of their own neuroses, the pair decide to spend the next month before their baby girl’s birth turning into “fully realized humans.” That involves everything from the mundane (can...

In a world where super-hero films rule the box office, you need something big and spectacular to attract attention. Legendary Pictures, which has cofinanced its share of heroic fare, has licensed the biggest monsters around: Godzilla and King Kong. They have dubbed it the Monsterverse and in Godzilla (2014) and King Kong: Skull Island (2017), they have sewn the seeds for these titans to mix it up for the first time in decades.
This summer’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters expanded that universe by giving us plenty of kaiju, introducing modern day audiences to Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. They are large and loud and ready to do battle with one another, sweeping mankind out of their way as mere impediments. It also sets up next spring’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
Given what we received, this never should have taken five years to make, ruining whatever momentum the reboot of the 1954 Toho classic,...

Godzilla: King of the Monsters didn’t exactly make a Kaiju-sized splash at the box office, but for many fans, it was still great to see the atomic breathing lizard back on the big screen. Director Michael Dougherty counts himself amongst those fans and tried to fill the sequel with as many hidden Easter eggs for franchise buffs as possible, from lore-inspired characters and weapons, to hidden roles for some of the geekiest celebrities in Hollywood. Now, thanks to a new interview with the filmmaker, we know about quite a few secret performances in one of the movie’s biggest actions sequences.
In a recent chat with Fresh Fiction, Dougherty revealed that when Rodan’s first battle scene required a few masked pilots to try and save the day, he called on a few big names to stop by set and suit up:

While “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” may be remembered as a disappointment at the box office, its long-term legacy should be kinder — because it’s just about unfathomably weird and crazy for a big budget movie from a major Hollywood studio.
“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” sees the gargantuan beast return to do battle against some of his most famous rivals, led by the three-headed dragon King Ghidorah. Through it all, humanity is stuck struggling to survive the onslaught, while the mysterious Monarch agency does its best to learn how to communicate with the creatures.
The new “Godzilla” film, despite the seeming finality of its title, is not the climax of this series, but simply a ramping up toward to the true epic conflict that the MonsterVerse has been building toward — which will come in next year’s “Godzilla vs. Kong.” That film will see the two most well known...

There is such a clear disdain for the human element in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, one wonders if there wasn’t a way to make this sequel with monsters alone. Co-written (with Zach Shields) and directed by Michael Dougherty, this film picks up five years after the wreckage of the first. The loss of life was devastating for many, the Russell family included. After the death of their son, Mark (Kyle Chandler) fell into a bottle and ran away while Emma (Vera Farmiga) fell into her work for Monarch, the agency devoted to discovering and protecting/destroying these mammoth creatures, which they call titans. While Mark and Emma’s daughter (Millie Bobbie Brown) tries to keep the relative peace between her parents, Emma perfects a device that allows humans to communicate and pseudo-control these beasts.
Since Mark was one of the initial creators of this device, he’s forced back into the fold.

Chicago – Everyone’s favorite city-flattening radioactive reptile, “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” gets stuck in a mire of third-rate-tv-network domestic melodrama in this disappointing follow up to the thrilling 2014 reboot. But before I roar about the many ways this misbegotten miscreant messes up, let’s throw a few pebbles of praise.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
The design of Godzilla continues to be exactly right. This is where special effects have been used to enhance, but not obliterate the design that made the big green guy so popular in the first place. And the CGI design on Mothra, Rodon, and King Ghidorah is impressive as well. Rodon in particular is born out of a mexican volcano, and looks pretty awesome, and King Ghidorah (the three headed monster) is usually pretty cool. All the creatures look like they’ve been hitting the gym in their time away from the screen, but they look and sound...

Let’s get ready to rumble! Everybody’s favourite giant green monster is back for the third instalment of Warner Bros’ and Legendary Entertainment’s ongoing MonsterVerse series, following Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island, with Godzilla vs Kong due out next year. Picking up roughly where Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla left off, the new film centres on crypto-zoological agency Monarch, who have been secretly keeping giant monsters – known as titans – in super-sized containment facilities around the globe.
