A man finds himself trapped in a room with no way out in director Nicolai Schümann’s thriller. Here’s our The Lonely Musketeer review.
In director Nicolai Schümann’s The Lonely Musketeer, Rupert (Edward Hogg) wakes up in a room with no way out. He has no clue how he got there, at first thinking it might have been the result of a particularly wild night out. Then things begin to get very serious when he realises there really is no way out and no one knows where he is.
All Rupert has is his trusty Nokia 3310 phone, revealing the film to be somewhat of a period piece. Thankfully, the Nokia 3310’s battery would last for days rather than mere hours like this writer’s iPhone. It’s his one connection to the outside world and his only way of getting help. Unfortunately, it also connects him to the...

U.K.-French film company Alief has boarded supernatural drama “Horizonte” by Colombia’s César Augusto Acevedo, winner of the 2015 Cannes Camera d’ Or for his debut feature “Land and Shade” (“La tierra y la sombra”). “Horizonte” is Acevedo’s sophomore feature, which had its world premiere at the 49th Toronto Film Festival in early September.
“We have been fans of Cesar Augusto since his first film, ‘Land and Shade,’” said Alief’s Miguel Angel Govea who described “Horizonte” as a “solid story of regret and redemption.”
“We were drawn by Acevedo’s lyrical screenplay, mesmerizing visuals and the standout performances by Chile’s grande dame, Paulina Garcia (Sebastian Lelio’s ‘Gloria’) and Colombian leading man Claudio Cataño, who stars in Netflix’s upcoming ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude,’” said Govea who said that Alief first eyed the drama at the 2024 Toulouse Cinélatino Films in Progress 43 where it won the...

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.
And what of Ruth Wilson’s Alice, last seen taking a short drop off a tall tower? She’s not listed among the cast this time, but there’s no saying that wily brainbox won’t find...

It’s pretty impressive that Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, who twisted Gotham into a funhouse mirror image of the comic book source material, got invited to do it a second time with their Epix series Pennyworth, purportedly the origins of Alfred. But which Alfred? And for which version of Batman?
Pennyworth: The Complete Second Season, with Covid-19 interruptions, finally arrived at the end of 2020 and is now available on a two-disc Blu-ray set from Warner Archive. You can decide for yourself if the series needed its connections to the Batman mythos, needed to exist at all or is entertaining. As with Gotham, the chaotic and uneven storytelling continues here in this weird, alternate reality of the world.
While it looks like the 1960s, the politics of England is decided more fascistic, and lots of secret organizations are having a secret war with the kingdom’s fate at stake.

Exclusive: After two seasons on Epix, DC origin series series Pennyworth is plotting a move to HBO Max for a potential third season.
I hear negotiations between Epix and Pennyworth producer Warner Bros. TV are still ongoing, and they involve hammering out a deal for the existing two seasons of the show, which premiered on Epix, to also be available on HBO Max. If an agreement is reached, and there is a Season 3 pickup, I hear Epix would get a second window, I hear. Reps for Epix, Wbtv and HBO Max declined comment.
The development is not surprising. Pennyworth was sold to MGM-owned Epix months before Wbtv parent WarnerMedia announced plans to launch its own streaming service, which became HBO Max. Existing originals on Warner Bros. TV Group’s platform DC Universe, including Harley Quinn and Titans, migrated to HBO Max, which was billed as a premium home for...

Pennyworth Season 2 is coming soon to Epix, continuing to fulfill the show’s touted remit as a prequel to the Batman mythos, notably with Alfred’s eventual arrival in Gotham City.
Having debuted on July 28, 2019, Pennyworth is the product of creator/executive producer/writer Bruno Heller and executive producer/director Danny Cannon (CSI franchise), and served as a quick reunion of key personnel from another Batman prequel series, Fox’s Gotham, which had just ended its five-season run that April. However, any associations end there, since Pennyworth is set in London in the 1960s, therefore—after doing some quick math—eliminating the notion of any continuity connection with the contemporary-set Gotham. Indeed, Pennyworth turned out to be a colorful crime series with swinging ‘60s aesthetics and a slightly over-the-top charm that’s not bound by its nevertheless-looming pre-Batman status.

Director Abner Pastoll’s icy Irish thriller opens brilliantly with a blood smudged woman showering while an ominous score throbs in the backdrop, implying something petrifying is about to happen. The music explodes into a terrifying crescendo as the scene flits into a low gliding aerial view of a suburban neighbourhood, recalling the eerie intro to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
We then dart back in time to meet protagonist Sarah (Sarah Bolger): a twenty-something, single mother, battling grief following the recent death of her husband. Sarah’s life is then hurled into further turmoil after local ruffian Tito (Andrew Simpson) breaks into her home to hide a stash of cocaine he stole from local gangsters.
After a quite tight set-up, Ronan Blaney’s script simmers during slow scenes establishing secondary characters, which are hugely detrimental to the temper and flow. While more emphasis should have been on plot progression,...

"Do you ever think about the future?" Level 33 Entertainment is releasing this indie drama film in select theaters this month for those interested in watching. Scarborough is the latest film by English filmmaker Barnaby Southcombe, and it first premiered at the Warsaw Film Festival last year. Two couples - each comprising of a teacher and a student - spend a life-changing weekend at the seaside resort town of Scarborough, on the East Coast of England (on Google Maps). Starring Jessica Barden, Jordan Bolger, Edward Hogg, and Jodhi May. It looks like a very raw, intimate relationship drama that confronts many hard truths that none of us really want to deal with. Though it still has a distinct "based on a play" feeling. Here's the official Us trailer (+ poster) for Barnaby Southcombe's Scarborough, direct from YouTube: Two couples - each comprising of a teacher and a student - spend a...

Barnaby Southcombe’s contrived film fails to humanise the illicit relationships between two students and their teachers
Even without looking at the credits, it’s easy to surmise that this was originally a stage play, given the small ensemble cast, limited use of locations, knowing use of repetition and gotcha plot twist. Lo and behold, this film is indeed based on the play of the same name, written 11 years ago by Fiona Evans. It started on the Edinburgh fringe before transferring to the Royal Court. While the writer-director Barnaby Southcombe has changed the original two-act structure, the core idea of the story hasn’t aged well in the intervening years. Being translated to film has in some ways made the inherent problems, like the prurience of the premise, worse not better.
The film presents two stories of two couples engaged in illicit trysts, and this all happens within the same...

It has taken a while for Adult Life Skills to make its way to theaters. After debuting back in 2016 at the Tribeca Film Festival, it’s approaching the three year mark as the movie now hits cinemas. Often, a delay like that can be a sign of trouble. Luckily, that’s in no way the case here. This comedy/dramedy is a quirky character study/coming of age tale with a winning performance at its core. A showcase for talented women in front of and behind the camera, this is worth the wait. Coming out this week at long last, you folks will finally be able to see what I saw way back in 2016. The movie is a comedy with some occasionally heavier elements, all centered around a tale of arrested development. An adaptation of filmmaker Rachel Tunnard’s BAFTA nominated short film, it takes place in a rural English...

"You need to lighten up!" Screen Media Films has debuted an official Us trailer for an indie comedy titled Adult Life Skills, a coming-of-age about an almost-30 woman who needs to grow up and move out of her mum's shed in the backyard. This film originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival back in 2016, and also opened in the UK also in 2016. It's somehow just now getting a Us release this January, almost three years later. Jodie Whittaker stars as Anna, a woman comfortable living in her mom's garden shed making funny videos all day with her thumbs, but as she approaches 30, she starts feeling the pressure to move on and "grow up" without compromising her youthful spirit. How quaint. In addition to Whittaker, the film's cast includes Edward Hogg, Lorraine Ashbourne, Brett Goldstein, Eileen Davies, Alice Lowe, and Ozzy Myers. Not really sure this is going to be that...

At the centre of The Commuter is one of those truths that, like the inevitability of death, or how much salt they put in Kellogg’s Corn flakes, most of us prefer not to acknowledge. In a different life without our kids, we might be happier. We’d have fewer wrinkles, a tidier house and a better sex-life. The people we love aren’t always good for us.
The more uplifting side of that truth is that most of us choose them anyway. Whatever the hardship, our family is ours and no other option—even if it’s easier—can replace them.
