Bleecker Street has picked up the U.S. rights to Relay, a gritty corporate whistleblowing thriller from director David MacKenzie that stars Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthingon.

Written by Justin Piasecki, Relay stars Ahmed as a fixer who specializes in brokering deals between whistleblowers and endangered corporations. He keeps his identity a secret and follows an exacting set of rules, only to see a message from a potential client, played by James, have him seek protection as the rules of the game quickly change and a dangerous cat-and-mouse chase involving his latest client escalates.

After a world bow in Toronto, Bleecker Street has set a 2025 theatrical release for the film.

Relay was financed by Black Bear, which produces alongside Thunder Road Pictures and Sigma Films. Producers include Basil Iwanyk, Gillian Berrie, Teddy Schwarzman and MacKenzie. Executive producers are Michael Heimler, John Friedberg, Erica Lee and Charlie Morrison.

Filming is now underway on a new British comedy by the name of Fackham Hall, which is shooting in the north of England. Filming locations are set to include Leeds and Liverpool for the movie, which is a send-up of period dramas.

Behind the camera, the feature marks the movie screenwriting debut of Jimmy Carr, who has written the script with the Dawson brothers and Patrick Carr. They’ve fashioned a screenplay that’s got Downton Abbey-esque material in its sights by the sounds of it. British cinema has had a go at this before, with Gary Sinyor’s Stiff Upper Lips back in 1997. Fackham Hall, from the title alone, sounds like a very different beast.

The cast features Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Thomasin McKenzie, Emma Laird and Katherine Waterston.

Adam Driver, Jeremy Strong and Anne Hathaway will star for James Gray in the crime drama Paper Tiger, which The Veterans is introducing to buyers at AFM next week.

Leone Film Group will fully finance the project, with Raffaella Leone producing alongside Rodrigo Teixeira under his Rt Features.The Veterans represents international sales and CAA Media Finance handles US rights.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025 on the story of two brothers pursuing the American Dream who get involved in a scheme that turns out to be too good to be true.

The plot saw Asa Butterfield and Cora Kirk play young couple James and Hayley who, upon deciding that they don’t want to be apart for Christmas after all, get on each other’s respective trains and find themselves at the others’ family home. Fuelled by farcical misunderstandings, the film is a solid slice of festive fun. It’s no Planes, Trains & Automobiles of course, but then again, what is.

Still! We’re getting more of it, and Your Christmas Or Mine 2 looks set to stick to the same formula. Think of it as a bit Home Alone 2 to Home Alone, if you will.

In the first significant deal announced during TIFF, Bleecker Street has acquired U.S. rights for the film.

First signings include Hero Fiennes Tiffin (The Woman King), Thomasin McKenzie (Last Night in Soho), Emma Laird (A Haunting In Venice) and Katherine Waterston, who appears in this year’s TIFF title The End We Start From alongside Jodie Comer and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Apple TV+ has officially renewed the critically acclaimed comedy Trying for a fourth season. The renewal was announced just days ahead of the show’s season three finale.

Esther Smith and Rafe Spall star as Nikki and Jason, a couple who’ve tried for years to have a family. In season three, Nikki and Jason opened their hearts and their home to foster children.

Where to Watch ‘Trying’: Apple TV+

Maybe it’s trite to call couples a “team,” but if there’s one current TV couple that really earns such a description, it’s Jason Ross and Nikki Newman from the Apple TV+ series “Trying.” It makes sense, given how much of the show so far is based around the two making an attempt (few series sport a title as thesaurus-prompting as this one) to grow their family.

After finding out they can’t conceive on their own, Nikki and Jason begin the lengthy adoption process. Even against the stream of encounters with exes and roller-coaster news updates from their adoption liaison, “Trying” has its moorings in two people who keep finding ways back to each other. Rafe Spall and Esther Smith have such a playful onscreen chemistry that, along with the direction from Jim O’Hanlon...

Wedding-day antics can go wrong in any number of ways. The last episode of “Trying” Season 2 is an ending filled with surprise boyfriends, unexpected proposals, emergency news, and a first dance set to bebop jazz. Any of those things in isolation could send a TV comedy careening from light-hearted fun into disaster. But this Apple TV+ show has proven repeatedly that it can handle all the absurdity in the lives of Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) while still making their journey together feel real.

As the director of both seasons, Jim O’Hanlon has been keeping his finger on the pulse of how the shows wild twists and turns play out. Along with series writer/creator Andy Wolton, the two have found a winning, dependable test for whether or not “Trying” works: Trust the couple at the center.

“Big physical comedy can get very broad if you’re not careful.

Genuinely happy couples are some of TV’s greatest magic tricks. So often, people in a contented relationship are used as flat foils for a pair of others caught in a dysfunctional loop. Other times, those couples’ joy is the narrative equivalent of cotton candy, empty calories designed to provide comfort and nothing else.

All of this makes “Trying” feel like that much more of an achievement, not to mention a welcome respite. The events of the first season eventually saw them approved by an adoption panel, and now begins the next stretch of the process.

What makes “Trying,” the latest comedy in the greater Apple TV+ library, such a success is that it finds a way for any viewer to be invested in its central couple’s happiness while not being shut off from the fortifying ups and downs that make following them worth it.

Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) don’t claim to be extraordinary. She works at a rental car company call center and he teaches adult Esl classes. When their attempts to conceive a child of their own are unsuccessful, they both decide to take the next step and pursue adoption. Like most prospective parents, they quickly find themselves in over their heads, but through that realization are able to lean on each other.

Filming is well underway on the fourth series of the brilliant Inside No. 9. Here's who to expect among the guest cast...

Series one and two of Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith's consistently inventive, continually surprising anthology strand Inside No. 9 have recently landed on Netflix UK, which will hopefully bring it to the attention of those who didn't catch it on the first run. If you're among them, then run, don't walk, etc. It's simply one of the best shows around.

Vertigo Films has debuted an official UK trailer for a London-based indie drama titled 100 Streets, about three people and three stories that reflect modern day London. Idris Elba stars with young actor Franz Drameh, plus a cast including Tom Cullen, Gemma Arterton, Kierston Wareing, Ken Stott, Ryan Gage, Ashley Thomas and Kola Bokinni. Elba plays a famous retired rugby player who gets involved in drugs. This is a very powerful trailer and they definitely got my attention, but I'm hoping the film isn't convoluted from all the different stories it's following. I really do like the way this looks and feels, I'm curious to check it out sometime soon. Nichols plays a pregnant woman, left partially deaf from an car accident which killed her husband, who now lives in an isolated new home. Where the White Man Runs Away

Al Pacino, Barkhad Abdi and Melanie Griffith are set to join Evan Peters in "The Bronze" director Brian Buckley's "Where the White Man Runs Away". Filming begins this month in New York and will move to Cape Town next month.

Charlie Brooker led a Q&A panel for the upcoming third series of A Touch of Cloth at London's BFI South Bank last night (July 29).

Joined by stars John Hannah, Suranne Jones and director Jim O'Hanlon, we and other lucky guests got to hear about the filming of Too Cloth for Comfort, to air on Sky1 on August 9. Here are just a few things we learnt from the spoof cop show screening:

1. Detective TV drama research involves hours of DVD compilations

Brooker revealed that he and his team of writers spent many hours watching DVDs of different cop show staples, including morgue scenes and interrogations. "The fun thing about this is that we write it as a team," he said.

"We sit there and we get compilation DVDs made of moments from detective dramas. So we're not watching the full shows, but shattered moments, so like an hour of morgue scenes.

Alex Kingston and Noel Clarke have featured in the first trailer for ITV's Chasing Shadows.

Reece Shearsmith also stars in the upcoming four-part drama, which airs on the channel later this year.

Chasing Shadows follows a special unit hunting down serial killers, with Shearsmith starring as the awkward but brilliant detective Sean Stone.

Kingston will play his partner Ruth Hattersley, while Clarke stars as Di Prior.

Christopher Menaul (The Suspicions of Mr Whicher) will direct the first self-contained story - 'Only Connect' - across two episodes. The director of the second two-part story 'Off Radar' will be Jim O'Hanlon (In The Flesh).

Fresh off his Oscar nomination, for Best Supporting Actor, for his performance in a film that was his feature acting debut, Barkhad Abdi has booked what will be his follow-up role in a historical drama centered on famous South African marathon runner, Willie Mtolo. Titled The Place That Hits The Sun, the project hails from producer Noel Pearson (My Left Foot), with Jim O'Hanlon attached to direct. Abdi will play Mtolo, the South African running legend who was born in 1964, and has participated in more than 23 marathons in South Africa and around the world. Reece Shearsmith, Alex Kingston and Noel Clarke are to star in new ITV drama Chasing Shadows.

Shearsmith will play DS Sean Stone in the four-part series, which follows a special unit hunting down serial killers.

Socially awkward but brilliant, Stone is a misfit with self-destructive tendencies and an eccentric manner.

Doctor Who star Kingston will play his partner Ruth Hattersley. An analyst from the Missing Persons Bureau, Hattersley is tasked to work alongside Stone and her empathic nature helps to balance out his awkward temperament.

Fellow Who veteran Clarke has been cast in the role of Di Prior in the drama from Dci Banks writer Rob Williams.

How did you become involved with In The Flesh and what attracted you to the show?
