Magicians, as a friend tells Jason (Joe Tyler Gold) in Desperate Acts of Magic, are the "third-most mocked profession," after ventriloquists and mimes. While arguably true, these are hardly the inspiring words Jason, a recently laid off It drone, is looking for when pondering his options on the other side of 30. (Jason's ex-boss insists that this is a "fire-tunity.") Seems like magic is becoming a bit of a micro-trend in movies. At first there was just “The Magical Burt Wonderstone” and now we’ve got “Desperate Acts of Magic,” directed by Tammy Caplan and Joe Tyler Gold and starring Gold, Valerie Dillman, Jonathan Levit, John Getz and many world-class magicians. The film will be opening in New York May 3 and in Los Angeles May 10.
