Spain’s fast-growing Secuoya Studios has re-teamed with Cuban-North American actor-producer William Levy (“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter”) for the action romantic comedy film “Bajo un volcán,” directed by Hugo Martín Cuervo.

The film will premiere exclusively on TelevisaUnivision streaming service ViX as part of a three-way deal unveiled at May’s Upfronts, which also sees the development of TV series “Arcadia,” a thriller starring Levy.

Shooting entirely on the Canary Island of Tenerife, “Bajo un volcán” marks a further step into the Levy-Secuoya alliance, which kicked off in 2022 with the production of ViX’s TV drama “Montecristo.”

This time, the two companies have engaged in a collaboration with Álamo Producciones Audiovisuales, the outfit led by prolific Spanish producer Eduardo Campoy, executive producer alongside Secuoya’s David Martínez and Wle’s William Levy and Jeff Goldberg.

Despite what the creators of HBO's "The Last of Us" live-action show may tell you, there have already been excellent video game adaptations, but most of them are in animation. From "Castlevania," to "Arcane," animation has captured the unique and diverse worlds of popular gaming franchises and reinvented them with entertaining and profound stories. Last year, we got a new entry in the canon of video game adaptations that proves there is no such thing as a video game curse — "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners."

With how divided Night City is politically, it's no surprise that of the seven districts in Cyberpunk 2077 some can be ranked better - or worse - than others. Each area personifies different characters, beliefs, and walks of life - and so how a player identifies with the core ethical issues within this dystopian game will certainly influence their preferences. However, when it comes to factors like exploration, aesthetics, and quality of content, there are some districts that assertively outclass others in Cyberpunk 2077.

From what's been revealed about the upcoming expansion, Phantom Liberty, it looks as though Pacifica will be receiving some love as the main setting. ViX+, the fledgling Spanish-language SVOD from TelevisaUnivision, is dipping into literary classics once more with the modern retelling of Alexandre Dumas’ popular revenge tale, “The Count of Monte Cristo.”

Cyberpunk Red is getting a tabletop expansion based on the popular Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. Before CD Projekt Red adapted the world of Night City to video games with 2020’s Cyberpunk 2077, the Cyberpunk franchise was known as an influential tabletop RPG that has been around in various forms since the late 80s. Cyberpunk Red is the fourth and most recent incarnation of the classic Cyberpunk game, having been released in November 2020 - a month before Cyberpunk 2077 launched to a mixed reception that has slowly begun to improve over the past year or so.

Earlier this week, R. Talsorian Games, the publisher behind the original Cyberpunk Red tabletop roleplaying game, announced a new expansion kit for Cyberpunk Red titled the Cyberpunk Edgerunners Mission Kit in collaboration with CD Projekt Red. New fanart for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners combines a retro vibe with the futuristic anime. One Twitter user shared a Gif of Lucy and David in a pixilated animation, reminiscent of 8-bit arcade game sequences. This combination of retro video game animation with a futuristic themed anime series is incredible.

Released in September 2022, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners takes inspiration from the game Cyberpunk 2077, which released in 2020. The ten-episode series was developed by CD Projekt (Cyberpunk 2077's developers) and Studio Trigger. Studio Trigger is known for its work on Kill la Kill, Darling in the Franxx, and Little Witch Academia, among other anime series. It was directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi. Fans have been showing their love for the series with fan art and this new Gif addition will have viewers missing the series even more.

In Cyberpunk 2077, Night City is crawling with enemies, and sometimes, V just wants to toss their guns asides and smash foes with a good, old-fashioned knuckle sandwich. With the release of the Edgerunner update, players have new and exciting ways to customize V, leading to multiple combinations that can wreak havoc in-game. For example, for a Melee Annihilation build, V becomes an in-your-face battering ram that uses anything from swords and clubs to their two powerful fists for battle.

Similar to the David Martinez build in Cyberpunk 2077, a Melee Annihilation build heavily invests attribute points in Body, grabbing perks from the aforementioned Annihilation category as well as Street Brawler and Athletics. For the Street Brawler perks, players should focus on offense instead defense, as V will be mostly swinging instead blocking since blocking doesn't stop bullets anyway. Wolverine may not be in Cyberpunk 2077, but a pair of Mantis Blades, the enemies of Night City, will be torn to ribbons. The Mantis Blades are a pair of retractable sword-like melee weapons implanted in V's forearms, similar to katana, except these hidden blades have an unlimited light attack, unleashing a fury of razor-sharp slices. With Cyberpunnk 2077's Edgerunner update, players have more options to create the perfect build to unleash the full potential of the Mantis Blades.

Since the Mantis Blades are melee weapons and technical implants, placing the right attribute points in the correct categories is slightly different compared to other builds, such as netrunner Lucy in Cyberpunk 2077. For starters, the Reflexes attribute has a Blades category, upgrading the Mantis Blades damage and crit chance, so investing points and grabbing perks here is imperative. The UK’s Raindance Film Festival has promoted senior programmers Martyna Szmytkowska and Malaika Bova to artistic directors, as part of a restructure of the festival’s leading team.

They join existing artistic director Suzanne Ballantyne who also works as head of programming and co-founded the festival with Elliot Grove.

Festival producer David Martinez has been promoted to executive director, ahead of the festival’s 30th anniversary edition, which runs from October 26 to November 5 this year.

Ballantyne, Szmytkowska and Bova will head up the festival’s creative vision, leading the broader programming team.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a fantastic show even when you remove any connections to its source material, and boy are there connections. The anime is filled with cameos and easter eggs that translate characters, weapons, and locations from Cyberpunk 2077 into anime form. It only seemed fair for CD Projekt Red to return the favor.

The legacy of video game adaptations is a complex one, as most attempts to create standalone stories based on massively popular video games have failed on some fundamental level.
