In recent years, Neil Gaiman has seen many of his beloved works become outstanding TV shows, from The Sandman and Dead Boy Detectives to Good Omens and American Gods. His name is ubiquitous in the fantasy space, but amid numerous sexual assault allegations, adaptations of his works are starting to be affected. Notably, Disney has paused its live-action adaptation of The Graveyard Book.
The Graveyard Book follows Nobody "Bod," a young boy who seeks refuge in a graveyard after his parents are murdered. He meets ghosts who become his new family and he grows up in the graveyard. The book shares a striking resemblance to Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book...except with ghosts instead of jungle animals.
Disney's adaptation of The Graveyard Book was announced in 2022. Marc Forster was on board to direct the movie, with David Magee penning the script. Neil Gaiman himself was never directly involved. When the project was announced,...

Disney has halted development on a forthcoming film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book in the midst of accusations of sexual assault against the writer. The film, from director Marc Forster, hasn’t been stopped completely, according to IndieWire, however “multiple factors, including the allegations, contributed to putting it on hold.”
No cast has been announced for The Graveyard Book, about a young boy raised by the supernatural inhabitants of a graveyard after his family is murdered. Forster came on board in 2022 along with his producing partner Renée Wolfe and producer Ben Browning.

Disney has put the brakes on a planned movie of Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book, following allegations made against the author.
Plans for a film based on Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book have been put firmly on hold, as the author faces sexual assault allegations. Gaiman has strongly denied the allegations, which have come from two women and were reported here.
In the last year or two, it looked as if Disney was going to push ahead with a screen adaptation of Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book, a title first published back in 2008. At one stage, this was set to be a story that the brilliant Henry Selick was looking to bring to the screen, but that turned out not to be. However, in 2022 it looked like the film had found a way forward when Marc Forster was revealed to be directing, and David Magee penning the screenplay.

Amid a recent series of sexual assault allegations against award-winning author Neil Gaiman, Disney has put a planned feature adaptation of his 2008 YA title The Graveyard Book on pause, Deadline can confirm.
Reps for the studio declined comment.
We’re told that there were a number of factors behind the decision to push pause on the film, the allegations against Gaiman — which the author has denied — being only one of them. Among the first accusers to come forward against Gaiman, in reporting from the U.K.-based Tortoise Media, was Scarlett, who alleged that the author sexually assaulted her in New Zealand in February 2022, while she was working as a nanny to his child. Another, K, said that after meeting Gaiman at a Florida book signing in 2003, aged 18, she was submitted to rough sex with him — amid an otherwise consensual relationship — which she “neither wanted nor enjoyed.”

Disney has paused its adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book,” which had set up production offices. The move comes after five women alleged sexual assault against author Gaiman, who wrote young adult novel “The Graveyard Book” in 2008.
Insiders tell IndieWire the film has not been scrapped but multiple factors, including the allegations, contributed to putting it on hold. Marc Forster was attached to direct.
This summer, U.K.-based startup news outlet Tortoise Media published a podcast series with detailed accounts of claims against Gaiman by four women. A fifth woman came forward in late July on the podcast “Am I Broken: Survivor Stories.” Two women said they’d been in consensual relationships with the author, but alleged that he’d forced them into non-consensual “rough and degrading” sex. The claims referred to incidents that were years apart.

Just like with almost every other 2024 film, I didn’t know much about The Tiger’s Apprentice. In fact, besides the fact that it had a tiger, I really didn’t know anything else about it. Therefore, I was surprised to see a cast boasting the likes of Henry Golding (The Gentlemen), Lucy Liu (Shazam! Fury of the Gods), Sandra Oh (Quiz Lady), and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), as well as talented screenwriters like David Magee (The Little Mermaid) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). Director Raman Hui (Monster Hunt) was the ‘wildcard’ I was unfamiliar with, so overall, I held no expectations whatsoever.
The Tiger’s Apprentice follows the well-covered, formulaic path of a young protagonist discovering a family secret and bearing it against some sort of antagonist. In this particular case, Tom (Brandon Soo Hoo), a Chinese American boy living in San Francisco, is the latest in a...

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.
While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

The Little Mermaid has been criticized by a prominent media diversity advocate for failing to acknowledge the horrors of slavery in the Caribbean.
Marcus Ryder, an influential British campaigner who also chairs the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, celebrated the casting of Halle Bailey but took issue with the film’s glossy depiction of racial harmony.
After watching the Disney remake with his six-year-old son, Ryder felt compelled to write a blog about the movie, which he said missed an opportunity to gently educate children.
Ryder said The Little Mermaid appears to be set in the 18th century at a time of African chattel slavery, but the fictional Caribbean islanders close to Atlantica live in a world free from human rights atrocities.

Remaking Disney's animated classics is a fool's errand, and yet a lucrative enough one that many filmmakers have tried their hand at it and mostly come up empty. So far, the only director to have moderate success at the task is indie darling David Lowery, who's batting two for two after this spring's underrated if flawed "Peter Pan and Wendy" and the 2016 family drama "Pete's Dragon."
It's to Lowery's credit that in each case, he's tackled a pre-existing title that either has a checkered and controversial history ("Peter Pan") or boasts a small enough fanbase that redoing the entire story won't alienate too many people ("Pete's Dragon"). But if you step too far off the beaten path with remaking titles from Disney's Renaissance era of the 1980s and 1990s, you risk angering most viewers. The alternative: films like "The Little Mermaid," the latest Disney remake that purports to change...

In Hans Christian Andersen's original tale of "The Little Mermaid," first published in 1837, the titular mermaid longs to swim to the surface and explore the world of humans after falling in love with a human man. She visits a sea witch who has a potion that can give her legs in exchange for her voice; she will become human but won't be able to speak. In Andersen's world, mermaids don't have souls and, when they die, transform into sea foam rather than ascending into heaven.
In order to survive, the little mermaid will have to marry a human man before a certain amount of time elapses. It seems that the mermaid will not be successful in wooing the prince and is destined to become sea foam. At the last minute, the mermaid's sisters rally, giving their hair to the sea witch in exchange for a magical dagger. If...

The under-the-sea mermaid princess Ariel (Halle Bailey) is curious about the non-ocean earth and its inhabitants, and gets her opportunity to infiltrate when human Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) is in a shipwreck and she saves him from drowning. Her father King Triton (Javier Bardem) forbids her to follow up on the rescue, so the evil sea witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) helps her out by casting a spell that make Ariel human. The catch is she has three days to get the prince to kiss her, and Ursula has taken away her siren song voice. Luckily, she has Sebastian the Crab (voice of Daveed Diggs) and seagull Scuttle (Awkwafina), to help her get to that kiss.

One of the ways "The Little Mermaid" live-action improves on the original is the development of Prince Eric's character. In the animated film, Eric has a lot more personality than the previous princes in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Cinderella," and "Sleeping Beauty" — he actually has interests like sailing, playing the flute, and walking on the beach with his adorable sheepdog named Max. Grimsby, Eric's royal advisor, is desperate to find him a wife, but the prince would rather rough it up with his shipmates.
But in the latter half of 1989's "The Little Mermaid," Prince Eric makes his obsession with the girl who rescues him from a boat wreck his whole personality. Eric instantly falls in love with her beautiful voice and wants to marry her. His relationship with Ariel, who he believes is a shipwreck victim, is more of a distraction from holing himself up in the...

Fifty-two minutes longer, with fewer songs (if I've counted right), and four of them by Lin Manuel Miranda. No longer a U but a PG, the BBFC dropping the "very" that the original had on its "mild threat" in what will be referred to as a "live-action" remake. Inverted commas on that because, as with Avatar: The Way Of Water, the presence of human faces in some places makes this no less an act of animation than anything made solely of ink on paper.
Though ink, paper, and accounting seem to inform most of this. You might think it cynical to think this cynical, but the creative in this industry does include the economics. Director Rob Marshall is best known for adaptations, including musicals, and also helmed Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, a sequel based (very loosely) on a book. David Magee worked with Marshall on Mary Poppins Returns.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “The Little Mermaid.”]
When “The Little Mermaid” filmmaker Rob Marshall thinks about his remake of the beloved 1989 Disney animated original, he’s clear: It is its own thing.
“It’s so funny how people hold onto things,” Marshall said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “They don’t realize that this is a different genre. You have to make it work as a live-action [film] as if there were never an animated film. It’s your chance to do things that work for the story. It’s all about story. It’s like taking a beautiful opera, a beautiful play, and doing it again. You look at it through a new lens. It’s not 1989, it’s 2023, so what can we bring to it and still hold on to the most important things that really still work, but then kind of reimagine it?”

For all of the spurious arguments over authenticity or criticisms about Halle Bailey’s casting as Ariel, Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid is a remarkably safe—and remarkably bland—live-action adaptation of Ron Clements and John Musker’s 1989 animated original. Beyond Lin-Manuel Miranda’s newly written music, including a cringe-worthy rap song performed by Scuttle (Awkwafina) and Sebastian (Daveed Diggs), this Little Mermaid feels more or less like two-hour-plus cosplay with the texture and gravitas of a Disneyland sideshow.
The story itself largely remains unchanged. Ariel (Halle Bailey) is the youngest of five daughters of the widowed King Triton (Javier Bardem). As the king desperately tries to keep Ariel obedient and away from the humans whom he blames for his beloved wife’s death, the precocious mermaid only grows more enamored and intrigued by human behavior and their affects.

Disney’s attempts to reinvent their animated classics as live action versions has proven to be largely a smart boxoffice play, but one with a mixed creative result. Certainly some were huge hits like Bill Condon’s Beauty And The Beast and Guy Ritchie’s less enchanting Aladdin. Others effectively created photo-real animals in The Lion King and The Jungle Book. Older Disney staples have gotten the treatment by focusing on the villains in Cruella and Maleficent and their sequels, even an unfortunate Disney + attempt on the untouchable (if you ask me) Lady And The Tramp. But even approaching an animated masterpiece, 1989’s The Little Mermaid and essentially trying to make a splashy (sorry) big screen live action musical that works above and under the water seems dicey on paper. So what do you do? Bring in Rob Marshall, and as it turns out that is all the new live action The Little Mermaid needed.

This piece contains minor plot details for "The Little Mermaid," which will be familiar to anyone who has seen the original movie. But here's a warning about it nonetheless!
1989's "The Little Mermaid" is truly one of the defining animated films in Disney's long, storied history. It's a classic that resonates to this day, which is why it's getting a live-action remake from director Rob Marshall later this month. A big part of what helps make the original such an enduring classic is the music. The remake does have some new songs in it, and our new, modern Prince Eric even gets to sing one. As for how the filmmakers chose where and when to add those new songs? It all came down to character.

Halle Bailey is making a splash as the star of The Little Mermaid and during the Hollywood premiere of the Disney film she opened up about finally having audiences see her as Ariel on the big screen.
“This moment means everything to me, I’m so grateful to be here,” she said. “I just feel really honored and I’m happy the day has finally come where we can all watch it.”
When the trailer for the live-action film was released, reactions to Bailey as Ariel became a trend on social media. For Bailey, the cultural impact the film will have on the young people of color is important and something that she experienced growing up.
“It means the world to me, especially for the beautiful babies to be able to see a reflection of themselves,” she added. “I am just honored to be a part of this and be...

Disney‘s live-action The Little Mermaid is swimming toward Memorial Day Weekend with a song in its heart and dollar signs in its eyes. The latest version of the Disney animated classic is tracking toward a $110M 4-day opening. That number puts The Little Mermaid in the top eight spots for a Memorial Day Weekend release. The upcoming musical won’t touch Top Gun: Maverick’s $160.5M Memorial Day start, but $110M is an outstanding total nonetheless.
Disney has a history of releasing films on Memorial Day Weekend, including Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, which earned $153M, the studio’s highest total for the 4-day holiday debut. Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin earned $116.8M in 2019, placing the Guy Ritchie-directed fantasy film slightly above The Little Mermaid’s expected launch.

Disney‘s CinemaCon panel is underway, with new footage from The Little Mermaid dazzling event guests. During The Little Mermaid presentation, Melissa McCarthy, who plays the villain, Ursula, took the stage. She introduced her iconic musical number, “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” from the upcoming film. JoBlo’s Chris Bumbray is our boots on the ground at CinemaCon this week. He says the song gives off a burlesque vibe, with McCarthy having a great time strutting her stuff.
Unfortunately, Chris also says the lighting of the film is poor. It’s worth noting the preview is screening in Dolby Vision, so there’s little excuse for the clip to look as dark as it does. Still, Chris says the cast looks good, and Halle Bailey could win audiences over with her outstanding performance. Overall, the film seems faithful to the animated original, even if aspects of the plot and music will change for the new version.

Disney's never-ending line of live-action remakes continues in May — there's actually another one later this week, in "Peter Pan & Wendy" — with "The Little Mermaid." Featuring new songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda ("Hamilton"), who's also among the producers alongside director Rob Marshall ("Chicago"), the underwater tale of Ariel the Mermaid is unfurling on the big screen next month. Halle Bailey ("Grown-ish") plays Ariel, with Jonah Hauer-King ("A Dog's Way Home") as Eric, the human prince she falls in love with.
Awkwafina ("The Farewell"), Daveed Diggs ("Hamilton"), and Jacob Tremblay ("Room") lend their voices to King Triton's trusted crab servant Sebastian, Ariel's dimwitted seabird friend Scuttle, and Ariel's tropical fish best friend Flounder, respectively. Javier Bardem is playing Ariel's father, King Triton, with Noma Dumezweni ("The Watcher") as Eric's mother Queen Selina, an original character. Lastly, Melissa McCarthy plays the conniving sea witch Ursula, who has ambitions to take over Triton's kingdom.

The live-action The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King will have some of the songs updated to modern times.
Songs like “Kiss the Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” have had their lyrics modified to allow consent.
“There are some lyric changes in ‘Kiss the Girl’ because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel],” Menken told Vanity Fair in an interview.
Alan Menken, who along with Howard Ashman created the soundtrack of the original animated film, worked with Lin-Manuel Miranda to update the lyrics for the live-action adaptation.
In the scene where “Kiss the Girl” plays, Prince Eric is encouraged to kiss Ariel, who at this moment doesn’t have a voice anymore. “Poor Unfortunate Souls” also has a line that was revised where Ursula says, “The men up there don’t like a lot of blabber, they...

Though it had a quick teaser around the time of the Super Bowl, Disney was clearly keeping its powder dry for the Oscars, as the first big main trailer for the live-action version of The Little Mermaid dropped Sunday evening. Take a look…
While Halle Bailey's Ariel has, of course been front and centre, we now get proper looks at the rest of the cast, including Melissa McCarthy as Sea Witch Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton (Javier Bardem) and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.
The plot here is likely to hew closely to the animated original – with mermaid Ariel rescuing Eric from a shipwreck and falling for both him and his world, bargaining her voice away for a chance to walk on land – and the script this time comes from David Magee, with Lin-Manuel Miranda helping out on some fresh lyrics alongside musical guru Alan Menken.

Disney’s two-minute trailer for the live-action The Little Mermaid debuted during the 2023 Oscars. The new Ariel and Ursula – Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy – took the stage and introduced the trailer, which was sort of bizarre given that it felt like part of the show rather than a commercial. "The Little Mermaid" is largely credited as one of the movies that launched Disney into its infamous Renaissance Era, so it's probably no surprise that the studio has decided to revisit it in a big way. Its live-action remake, starring Grammy-nominated singer Halle Bailey, is on its way, and we've got the first true look at the Rob Marshall-helmed film.
Much of what we see in this trailer looks familiar if you've watched the original 1989 film, only adapted to a live-action medium. However, we did get plenty of new footage in this new trailer that is sure to entice fans. We got to see Ariel (Bailey) explore the film's version of Atlantica, see other characters such as the charming Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King), and, unfortunately for her, see her get brought into the clutches of the conniving Ursula (Melissa McCarthy). Speaking of which, Ursula in live-action looks and sounds great so far,...

Disney’s streak of live-action remakes of animated classics continues with “The Little Mermaid,” and fans are eager to see how this iconic 1989 movie comes to life in this new feature. The animated original is largely responsible for jump-starting a creative resurgence for Disney after a fallow period in the 1980s, as the film’s Broadway-level original songs and emotional story struck a chord with kids and adults alike. The resurgence continued and solidified with “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” and “The Lion King,” and while those three films have already gotten live-action remakes from Disney over the past decade (to whopping box office success), it’s finally “The Little Mermaid”’s turn.
Below we’ve rounded up a guide to everything we know about the “Little Mermaid” live-action remake so far.

With her eyes closed, Ariel imagines a world where people dance on two feet, breathe the open air, and settle down in villages after falling in love. A sun burns brightly behind a clouded sky, foreshadowing Ursula’s arrival and dishonest dealings. The Little Mermaid poster is beautiful, though it would have been nice for Disney to let some of the light in.

Rob Marshall directs this bold vision for the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure.

It’s only three months until the release of “The Little Mermaid,” Disney’s newest live-action remake of a classic animated film/license to print money. The second teaser trailer is here, and this one gives us a dimly-lit glimpse of (and listen to) Melissa McCarthy as the evil sea witch Ursula.
The original Disney adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale from 1989 won two Oscars—Best Score for Alan Menken, and Best Original Song for “Under the Sea” for Menken and Howard Ashman. The film is also widely credited as sparking the “Disney Renaissance,” which put the studio back on top as a cultural powerhouse with a string of movies based on classic fables. Two years later they released “Beauty and the Beast,” the first animated film ever to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.
Naturally, anticipation is high for “The Little Mermaid (2023)” The new iteration comes from a slew of heavy-hitting creatives.
