People starting the movie Spaceman would be forgiven for thinking that their Netflix had glitched. Yes, we do see Adam Sandler’s character Jakub dressed in a space suit. But he’s not floating through the cosmos. He’s walking through a wooded stream, the greenery of the trees and bushes reflecting off his mask.
What the heck does this have to do with being a space man, one might ask? By the end of the movie, directed by Johan Renck and written by Colby Day (adapting the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfař), Spaceman answers all your questions. Or rather, Jakub’s new friend, an alien spider named Hanuš, explains everything in the gentle, dulcet tones of Paul Dano.
Spaceman‘s strange, but ultimately clear, approach may frustrate some viewers. It may excite others, leaving them wanting to watch more sci-fi movies with a surrealist approach. Regardless of...

Disney, 20th Century Studios and CAA won’t have to face a copyright lawsuit brought by production executive Madison Jones, who accused them of conspiring together to steal ideas from a screenplay he pitched for Ad Astra.
U.S. District Judge Fred Slaughter found that the makers of the 2019 sci-fi film couldn’t have ripped off Jones’ work since they didn’t have access to his screenplay, which was completed after Ad Astra was already written. And even if they did read the script, the movies aren’t similar enough to prove copyright infringement, according to a summary judge order issued on Tuesday.
Peter Ticktin, a lawyer for Jones, said his client plans to appeal a decision by the judge barring a forensic search of the hard drive of writers James Gray and Ethan Gross. He argued that it could’ve shown that they engaged in fraud to back up...

James Gray aims for the stars in his ‘to the stars’ picture and he almost gets there. Lost between our world and his, the Ad Astra lands somewhere between what could have been greatness and what, in the end, falls short.
Another performance from Brad Pitt, aiming for the bleachers, sees him playing Astronaut Roy McBride. The film follows McBride as he undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.
The movie is far deeper than that plot can ever detail, it also captures something that is almost impossible to explain.

Director James Gray’s ambitious space odyssey “Ad Astra” was released back in September, and while its Oscar and year-end buzz has quieted, the science-fiction epic has all the makings of a cult classic to be revered for eternity. In tribute to the film starring Brad Pitt as an astronaut and lonely island of a man on a dark night of the soul across the cosmos on an elusive mission, illustrator Greg Ruth has created a Mondo poster that captures the dizzying spirit of Gray’s cosmic tone poem. Check out the full poster, exclusive to IndieWire, below.
“I was lucky enough to catch ‘Ad Astra’ in the theaters early on, and fell in love with the themes of the film right away,” said Ruth. “It’s rare to see a film set in this uncompromising, expansive landscape that is so vast and overwhelming tell a story that is at all times quiet,...

The feature film version of “Downton Abbey” is heading for an impressive $30 million opening weekend at 3,079 sites for an easy victory at the North American box office, early estimates showed Friday.
The launch of Brad Pitt’s space drama “Ad Astra” will land in second with about $20 million, while Sylvester Stallone’s action-thriller “Rambo: Last Blood” will reel in around $18 million. Stx’s second frame of “Hustlers” should finish fourth with about $16 million and Warner Bros.’ third weekend of “It: Chapter Two” will follow in fifth with about $14 million to hit $176 million in its first 17 days.
Of the three new films, “Downton Abbey” is faring the best, easily out-performing pre-release forecasts — which had been in the $20 million range for each of the trio. The ITV series that aired in the U.S. as part of PBS’ Masterpiece Classics followed the lives of the Earl of Grantham and his family as...

Meanwhile, Brad Pitt’s space drama “Ad Astra” has launched with $1.5 million in previews, while Sylvester Stallone’s action-thriller “Rambo: Last Blood” scooped up $1.3 million at nearly 2,900 North American locations.
The trio of openers have each been forecast to open in the $20 million range. Warner Bros.’ third weekend of “It: Chapter Two” and Stx’s second frame of “Hustlers” may also finish in the same vicinity, making the weekend’s contest for first place one of the most competitive within recent memory. “Hustlers” generated $43 million domestically in its first six days and “It: Chapter Two” has gone past $160 million in two weeks.

Is Brad Pitt’s character in “Ad Astra” a sociopath? That is the nagging question after watching director and co-writer James Gray’s remarkably stylish and fascinating space drama, which follows astronaut Roy McBride (Pitt) on a mysterious trek to the edge of the solar system to find his estranged father, Clifford (Tommy Lee Jones).
At its core, “Ad Astra” is a family saga about a man grappling with the person he’s become by way of an increasingly intense desire to reconnect with his astronaut dad who abandoned him, the man whose otherworldly curiosity far superseded his paternal ambition. Clifford is more of a figment than an actual person in Roy’s eyes — a man who by default is heralded because he dared to go where no other had gone before, regardless of the casualties along the way. But Roy, a man whose conflicted emotions are confined to internal...

Seek out the nearest jumbo screen and let filmmaker James Gray, a renegade visionary with a big reach and a knack for sneaky mischief, sweep you off ad astra (that’s “to the stars” in Latin). Getting lost in the space conjured up by the writer-director and the brilliant Dutch-Swedish cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema (Interstellar, Dunkirk) to screw with your head and throw off your equilibrium is part of the fun. Plus you’ll have Brad Pitt for company, which is good since he’s giving one of his best...

James Gray never gets the acclaim that he deserves. For years, the filmmaker has been doing high quality work that repeatedly gets the short shrift. Especially with Two Lovers, the lack of love is just absurd. This week, however, he’s finally going to be on the radar of the masses, as his largest movie to date is opening in Ad Astra. With some of his most emotional directing, alongside a phenomenal Brad Pitt lead performance, this is damn near a masterpiece. Without question, this is one of the best works of 2019 so far. Furthermore, it’s not at all like you probably imagined it would be when the project was first announced. It’s something different, and truly, something more. The film is a science fiction drama mixed with a mystery, though that’s an incredibly reductive description. Set in the not at all distant future, humanity has made technological gains,...

Brad Pitt’s sci-fi adventure movie “Ad Astra” is heading for a launch around $20 million during the Sept. 20-22 weekend, early tracking showed Thursday.
Pitt is playing a man who journeys across the solar system in search of his missing father, a dangerous renegade scientist. Tommy Lee Jones is the father.
James Gray directed “Ad Astra” for Fox from a script he co-wrote with Ethan Gross. Ruth Negga, Jamie Kennedy, and Donald Sutherland are also starring in “Ad Astra.”
“Ad Astra” premiered on Thursday at the Venice Film Festival. Fox had planned to open the title on May 24 but Disney shifted “Ad Astra” to the fall after buying the Fox’s movie assets. Gray began shooting the movie, which carries an $80 million budget, in 2017.
Fox saw strong performance in 2015 from its space-travel movie “The Martian,” which grossed $630 million worldwide. Sony’s 2016 space film “Passengers” pulled in $300 million in global box office.

Ad Astra is finally here. Lifting off this week at the Venice film festival with enormous ambitions if somewhat limited thrust, James Gray’s long-awaited sci-fi adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (that nicely malleable of texts) expands like a supernova without ever quite inspiring the introspection it needs to thrive. The result is a rarity that should be seen, regardless. It’s a deeply personal film about human nature from a beloved filmmaker who has been given the largest canvas imaginable–with all the trimmings–that ultimately proves a bit of a slog.
Set in the near future, Gray’s seventh film as director (it was co-written with recent collaborator Ethan Gross) follows the story of a man who is sent to the edges of the solar system to find the one person potentially capable of saving Earth from impending doom: his dad. Yesterday morning, a long awaited Trailer was released for Ad Astra, a movie that cinephiles have been very much anticipating. Science Fiction has been starting to get its due and respect from the Academy in recent years, so the thought of an art film director tackling this genre, on a huge canvas, with one of the biggest stars in the world, was basically everything that a fan of the movies could ask for. The film did not disappoint with this first look, either. You’ll be able to see the Trailer for Ad Astra at the bottom of this post, though first, let us chat about the flick a bit, especially in terms of how we may have ourselves an Oscar player here. The film is the latest from well respected filmmaker James Gray, his largest scale one to date, easily. This is the simple plot synopsis from IMDb:...

Brad Pitt is launching into the stratosphere in the first trailer for “Ad Astra.” The dazzling sci-fi drama stars Pitt as an astronaut who travels on an interstellar mission to search for his missing father.
The new footage begins with Pitt’s character, Roy McBride, praising his father, who never returned from a voyage to search for signs of extra-terrestrial life.
“I do what I do because of my dad,” he says. “He was a hero. He gave his life for the pursuit of knowledge.”
The clip cuts to McBride, who wakes up in a hospital room after free-falling from dizzying heights when his space mission seemingly goes astray.
“It’s crazy out there,” his wife, played by Liv Tyler, says. “There’s fires everywhere and plane crashes. They’re calling it a surge.”
The astronaut is soon called to compete a mission to save the planet.

The trailer for Brad Pitt astronaut thriller “Ad Astra” touched down on Wednesday, and the September Walt Disney Studios release looks like it’ll a bumpy ride — but in a good way.
“Ad Astra” follows astronaut Roy McBride (Pitt),who travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet, per Disney’s logline. His journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos.
And yes, there may be aliens. Or at least, that was part of Pitt’s dad’s search — and probably his.

Liv Tyler co-stars in the film as Pitt’s wife — she’s always with these astronauts. Or in the case of her role as Ben Affleck’s love interest in “Armageddon,” an oil rig worker turned astronaut.

Brad Pitt’s science-fiction adventure movie “Ad Astra” has quietly vanished from the release schedule, three weeks prior to its previously announced May 24 opening date.
Fox had originally dated “Ad Astra” for Jan. 11, 2019, then decided in late 2018 to move it back four months to the Memorial Day weekend on May 24. Disney closed the deal for the 20th Century Fox film assets in March and has not done any promotion for the movie since then — no trailer or stills have been released. “Ad Astra” was not included in early tracking numbers released Thursday for the Memorial Day period, expected to be dominated by Disney’s live-action “Aladdin.”
Pitt is expected to be at the Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” in which he co-stars with Leonardo DiCaprio. The screening will likely be on May 21, the 20th anniversary of “Pulp Fiction.”
The studio had no comment Thursday.

Last year, 20th Century Fox had two films in Oscar contention based on true stories: the P.T. Barnum musical biopic “The Great Showman” starring Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams; and “The Post,” Steven Spielberg‘s docudrama about the 1971 decision by Washington Post publisher Kay Graham (Meryl Streep) to trust her editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) and publish a classified dossier on the escalating American involvement in the Vietnam conflict.
This year, the studio has four strong contenders led by Steve McQueen‘s “Widows,” a film version of a hit British TV series. This is his first film since the Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” in 2013. The all-star cast is led by Viola Davis, who could well be nominated for her leading role as a woman who takes over the planning of a bank robbery after her husband dies.

In this year’s battle of the auteurs, expect to see Wes Anderson’s animated “Isle of Dogs” contend against long-overdue Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed”, “The Big Short” director Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic “Backseat” starring a beefy Christian Bale, Oscar perennial Mike Leigh’s 1819 massacre drama “Peterloo”, and “Gravity” Best Director-winner Alfonso Cuaron’s return to Mexico, 70 mm black-and-white drama “Roma.”
That Netflix title was invited to Cannes, along with Paul Greengrass’ real-life terrorism drama “Norway” (November 2), but out of competition, so Ted Sarandos pulled them back to the fall festivals. That’s where we shall find out which films prove their mettle. (“Norway” is an Adapted Screenplay.)
Advance buzz is building for Yorgos Lanthimos’ royal-court dramedy “The Favourite”, starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz, partly because the always off-beat Lanthimos did not write the witty original script by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara.

James Gray’s sci-fi movie Ad Astra is a father-son story about Brad Pitt traveling through space to find his missing dad, a possibly evil scientist played by Tommy Lee Jones. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says that those two old men will be joined by Ruth Negga from Preacher, who has joined the film in some secret role. We don’t know anything about this secret role, but since we also don’t really know if this is a sci-fi movie like Valerian or a sci-fi movie like Interstellar, it’s hard to say if she’ll even be a human or some kind of space creature.
In addition to directing, Gray—who previously directed The Lost City Of Z—co-wrote the script with Ethan Gross, who wrote a few episodes of Fringe.

With production gearing up for a September start on the Brad Pitt-led Ad Astra, final talks with Tommy Lee Jones are heating up to get him to join the cast on the futuristic sci-fi epic.
Written and directed by We Own the Night and The Lost City of Z’s James Gray, information surrounding the plotline is being kept top secret, however, it has been reported that Pitt would play the slightly autistic space engineer Roy McBride. Twenty years after his father left on a one-way mission to Neptune in order to find signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence, McBride travels through the solar system to find him and understand why his mission failed.
Going on that premise, we can assume that Tommy Lee Jones could very well be playing his Father, in a story which will be set in Deep space. Ethan Gross has co-written the script...

Ad Astra, a sci-fi film epic, will see Brad Pitt star as an Army space engineer.
Ad Astra is a sci-fi film project that stars Brad Pitt as Roy McBride, an astronaut who travels to the outer edges of the solar system in an attempt to find his missing father and, you know, save Earth.
The film is helmed by James Gray, working off a script he co-wrote with Ethan Gross. Gray wrote and directed The Lost City of Z, the 2013 romantic drama The Immigrant (which featured Pitt’s Allied co-star Marion Cotillard), the 2007 Mark Wahlberg crime drama We Own the Night, going back to his debut in the 1994 Tim Roth crime drama Little Odessa.

Our huge excitement for James Gray‘s next feature, The Lost City of Z, can partly be explained by this great filmmaker’s less-than-prolific output. You can imagine, then, how nice it is to hear yet another title — and possibly his most interesting endeavor yet — is soon to roll cameras.
For years, there’s been talk of a sci-fi feature known as To the Stars. As co-written by Gray and Ethan Gross, it concerns “an odyssey through the Solar System,” in which astronauts — using “a technology of space travel that would be believable today” — are tasked with bringing a “renegade” one of their own back to Earth. It’s supposedly inspired by both Heart of Darkness — by extension, probably Apocalypse Now, too; it’s a Gray favorite and touchstone for The Lost City of Z — and the emotional trauma endured by men who walked on the moon, a subject the...

Geoffrey Arend offers plenty of proof that he's still happy with his series role.
In its third season, ABC's Tuesday medical mystery "Body of Proof" has made a number of changes, with some of the cast members who originally supported star Dana Delany now gone. As eager forensic pathology fellow Ethan Gross, Arend was among those kept, and he maintains he didn't think his job was in jeopardy.
"What actually kept me from thinking they were going to cut my character," he tells Zap2it, "was Windell (Middlebrooks, the co-star who plays Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Curtis Brumfield). I thought, 'They can't cut his character,' so I felt I was afforded some safety since my scenes are predominantly with him. I'm attached to the hip with him, and he's just gold."
Still, Arend muses, "I'm sure there are other gawky, cranelike actors ready and waiting, and that ABC has a list of.
