In Gold Derby’s recent poll that asked viewers to weigh in on whether AleXa deserved to win “American Song Contest,” a plurality of respondents said yes. The singer/dancer/songwriter, who was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma but now lives in Seoul, South Korea, wowed audiences with her K-pop single “Wonderland.” She came in with 34 of the poll results, followed by Washington’s Allen Stone and his song “A Bit of Both” in second place at 28. While AleXa dominated the all-important audience vote, it was Stone who secured the most points from the national jury.

The state of Oklahoma has reason to celebrate today as Tulsa native AleXa was crowned the first-ever winner of NBC‘s American Song Contest. After an eight-week battle, the competition came to a close on Monday night’s live finale as the 10 finalists gathered for one last performance. If you haven’t been watching “American Song Contest,” you might not know that Scott Kirkland from the Crystal Method is from Nevada. He’s representing one of 45 states that have already competed on on the NBC competition, which is based loosely on Europe’s popular Eurovision Song Contest.

Other well-known names in the semi-finals of the competition include Michael Bolton for his home state of Connecticut, with the former champion of “The Voice,” Jordan Smith, competing on behalf of Kentucky, and “Glee” alum Riker Lynch fronting for Colorado.

Name recognition, however, isn’t always a guarantee of easy passage through the competition. Of those recently eliminated in the contest –Jewel, who represented Alaska, and Macy Gray, Ohio.

Macy Gray, one of the biggest stars to step foot on the “American Song Contest” stage, has just been shockingly eliminated from the competition. The “I Try” Grammy winner performed her new single “Every Night” during the second week of NBC’s reality TV show (watch above), but failed to rank high enough from the jury of 56 industry professionals to advance automatically. Macy’s fate then rested in the hands of viewers at home, which gave her a leg up due to her nationwide name recognition. However, it was revealed in the third week that the audience chose to send three other participants to the semi-finals instead.

Heads up: Macy still has a shot of re-entering the competition at a later date, as NBC has promised there will be two “redemption” artists that return to the show. “Show ’em love by streaming their music,” host Snoop Dogg said on Monday night.
