Crispy’s Curse is new horror comedy from director John Williams, which has been selected to play at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on Sunday 21st January. I got chance to ask John a few questions about why he decided to write it as horror comedy as a horror comedy, the curse on set during filming and creating a Christian Metal band.
What can we expect from the film?
A crazy insight into the world of paranormal investigators, a Christian heavy metal band and 2 small town detectives as they go in the search of a ghostly killer clown.
What was your inspiration for writing Crispy’s Curse and why did you decide to do a horror comedy?
I had always wanted to do a clown film, but it needed to be different. It’s more of a nod towards Cat in the Hat than it is to It. I have done two previous horror comedies,...

The Bottom Shelf returns, with a video nasty, The Howling 2, and a tribute to the late Herschell Gordon Lewis...
To most, September 26th is the date when, in 1680, the Dutch city Gorinchem suffered a citizen’s revolt due to an imposed tax on cereal. From now on, though, that will change, as any right-thinking person will remember that date in 2016 as the day The Godfather Of Gore, the great Herschell Gordon Lewis, died.
The brain behind a range of vintage cult classics, spanning the gamut of exploitation cinema, from splatter movies to comedy erotica and supernatural witchcraft thriller (niche!), Lewis’ influential sixties and seventies productions paved the way for the video nasties of the eighties and the gory likes of David Cronenberg and Peter Jackson and stand up today as camp, gawdy historical documents of a bygone era. As such, to coincide with an impeccably timed release...

Witch hunts, interrogation and paranoia feature in fairly straightforward space-court Star Trek: Tng episode The Drumhead...

Sabotage! On board the Enterprise! D! Cue up the Beastie Boys! (Actually don’t, we’ve all seen Star Trek Beyond and the last thing we need is that being taken literally again.)
But regardless, a Klingon Exchange officer – J’Dan the Exobiologist – stands (well, sits) accused of trying to blow up the Enterprise’s engines and funnelling secrets to the Romulans. In an attempt to establish his innocence he tries to bribe Worf, who gives him the full Space Rodney King treatment in a scene which I can’t decide if I’m supposed to feel uncomfortable with or not.
Luckily, one of Starfleet’s meddling Admirals is around to help investigate this potential espionage onboard the Enterprise. Not only that, Admiral Satie has...

There are more things in heaven and earth, than are dreamt of in our philosophy, for sure. We live in a mysterious world and all sorts of unexplained things happen every day… or do they?
There are a few things these days that science has managed to partially, if not entirely, lift the veil on. Seeing as the basic job description of a scientist is to unravel the mysteries of the universe (a pretty cool job description in anyone’s book), it is unsurprising that they have so far managed to de-mystify a fair few tales of the strange and the unexpected.
Perhaps there’s a little less magic in the world now, but there are also fewer evil demons that want to wear you like a pretty frock – which is possibly a good thing.
Despite what the likes of Derek Acorah and Uri Geller might tell you,...

With spiralling plots and returning characters retreading old ground, Broadchurch’ second series is really starting to flounder…
This review contains spoilers.
Increasingly, Broadchurch’s second run is starting to feel less like a drama in its own right, and more like a set of specially filmed DVD extras to accompany the first series. Previously unseen Broadchurch trial footage! Hear witness testimony from your favourite characters! Click here for the juicy alternate killer! Exclusive documentary special: what really happened in Sandbrook…
As such, it’s diverting for rabid fans, but not compelling enough to stand alone.
That sense was compounded this week by the return of Susan Wright (Pauline Quirke), who threw one of plumber Nige’s spanners in the works by testifying that it was her estranged son and not Joe Miller she saw placing Danny’s body on the beach. Why land her boy in it? Either Susan still thinks he did it,...

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.

One of the best things about England is its rich and varied history. Considering the size of the country, we English have more history and heritage per square inch than most other countries in the western world. We also happen to have one of the bloodiest and brutal legacies this side of a genocide. We’ve been invaded, conquered, liberated and conquered all over again… and that’s only in the last 2000 years.
As a result, we also happen to have some of the most haunted places in the world; where spirits of the wronged and tortured persist to scare the living bejesus out of all those who dare venture into their hallowed presence.
The creepy woods, derelict buildings and abandoned farms that score English countrysides can leave even the hardened skeptic feeling more than a little uncomfortable. Yes, we Brits certainly do spooky like pros, and ahead you...

From John Lennon to Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson, death is clearly not the final curtain if you're famous
Princess Diana might think that she's the bees knees for contacting Naomi Watts to give her blessing to the actor's portrayal of her in a new biopic, but she's not doing anything special. Famous dead people have been making bold pronouncements from beyond the grave for years. In fact, the bigger the star, the more important the statement.
Take Andy Warhol, for example. You might think that he's busy kicking back and enjoying his retirement from life, but it's been reported that he often returns to natter with Lady Gaga. Eventually he'll get around to revealing the meaning of life to her, but for now he apparently just tells her what to wear. So, at the very least, we've got someone to blame now.

This is like a punchline to a bad joke.
Derek Acorah, a psychic who gained notoriety for his work on the TV show "Most Haunted," had to cancel a June 8 show in Scotland due to "unforeseen circumstances."
According to his website, the 63-year-old Englishman specializes in communicating with the dead as a "medium." His skills, apparently, do not extend to seeing his own future.
Acorah's agent, Brian Shaw, said the language on the cancellation notice had been written by officials at the venue, not by Acorah himself, Upi reports.
"Why the theater ... used the words 'unforeseen circumstances' I don't know," Shaw said. "You couldn't make it up -- it's an old music hall joke... It made more sense to [push back the performance]... due to the other upcoming dates on Derek's tour and for personal reasons."
The show was booked as part of Acorah's Eternal Spirits Tour.
Acorah isn't the only psychic to get flak for a canceled performance.

An episode of Most Haunted - featuring psychic Derek Acorah becoming 'possessed' - could have spooked children when it aired on Sky's Pick TV channel in the early evening last year, Ofcom has ruled.
Broadcast on October 17 at 6pm, the episode saw the Most Haunted team investigating Chatham Dockyard in Kent, where there had been been sightings of so-called "malevolent spirits" and "dark evil shadows".
The programme featured descriptions of various spirits, including a headless drummer boy, duelling cavaliers, a grey lady with no feet who hovered, and the ghost of one of the port's commissioners, Peter Pett, who was later killed in the Tower of London.
At one stage, Acorah suddenly became "possessed", supposedly by the spirit of a soldier, and he then spoke in a gruff deep voice and identified himself as Richard Neville, before collapsing.
During a later seance, Acorah was again "possessed", this time by a 9-year-old boy called Barney Little,...

Few things are more important when it comes to building expectations for a movie than the title itself. While every aspect of a production – from the actors, to the director, or even a costume designer – can pique our particular interest in an upcoming movie, often it’s the title which will first form part of our decision over whether or not a film appeals to us.
Most of us realise that film titles don’t have to be as gratuitously up front as say Snakes On A Plane or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but it’s still often a surprise when something with such a seemingly literal title can often give us the completely wrong idea. When we walk into a video store with the urge to watch something new, it’s the title – or cover art – which will form our initial idea of what the film could be like.

30 Minutes Or Less (15)
(Ruben Fleischer, 2011, Us) Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride. 83 mins
After the heights of The Social Network, Eisenberg is demoted to a lowly pizza delivery boy for this casual caper movie. He's driven to rob banks at the behest of McBride's criminal non-mastermind, with buddy Ansari roped in for comic effect. In fact, comic effect seems to be all this is after. Like a dodgy pizza, it's enjoyable at the time but nutritionally dubious, a bit thin, and just about gone cold by the time it's finished.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (15)
(Thomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/Fra/Ger) Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch. 127 mins
A very British spy thriller that dispenses with all that hasty pacing and coarse action in favour of well-tailored men talking in rooms. A complex, classy cold war mole-hunt that demands attention, but rewards it richly.

On tonight’s Peter Andre – The Next Chapter…..
Peter is back in work mode and meets his fans for the first time this year at his official calendar signing. Well over a thousand fans turn up to the event and for some of them hysteria sets in when meeting their idol.
Peter has also been asked to present the backstage TV footage for the Brit Awards, and after his initial nerves he does a great job at interviewing all the celebrities, including Alan Carr and Dermot O’Leary.
Peter and his brother Danny are moving forward in their plans to open up a line of coffee shops, and they visit a barista school to learn more about coffee beans and they also take the kids to a cupcake shop and have some messy fun decorating.
There’s more fun with Peter and his brothers when he takes them all paintballing.

Clint Eastwood takes a slightly different turn with his latest movie. Here's our take on Hereafter, which arrives in the UK today...
On the face of it, Hereafter might seem an odd fit for Clint Eastwood. A supernatural drama directed by the man who made his name through gritted teeth and a really big gun?
Eastwood, however, has always been keen to confound expectations, alternating between films engineered to play to his strengths and those that might stretch them.
As early as 1971's The Beguiled, he was turning his image on its head, then went back to the day job with Joe Kidd in 1972, before 1973's Breezy showed his more sensitive side. A kind of 'one for me, one for them' arrangement way before Steven Soderbergh got in on the act.
But Hereafter isn't the big stretch it would appear to be. There's a big question hinted at within Peter Morgan...

Haunted Houses have been a feature of literature, film and folklore for decades, with 40 per cent of Brits believing in the phenomenon and a hit TV show, Most Haunted, exploring claims of paranormal activity.
On the big screen, some of the more memorable door-creaking chillers include The Haunting (1963 and 1999), The Legend of Hell House (1970), The Shining (1980), The Changeling (1980), House on Haunted Hill (1959 and 1999), The Amityville Horror (1979 and 2005), The Orphanage (2007) and Paranormal Activity (2007).
And just recently it was announced that Guillermo del Toro would write and produce The Haunted Mansion, based on Disney's theme park ride.
Continuing the cobweb-strewn tradition, last month saw the DVD release of Psychosis, the most recent entry in the genre, in which Buffy actress Charisma Carpenter plays a novelist who moves from California to an English manor house in search of peace and tranquillity.

"I think what Derek did on that day was very misguided. "I think it was tragic on many levels: tragic for mediumship; tragic for the Jackson family; tragic for Derek. (more)...

✒The biter, it seems, has been bit. It is only a few short weeks since the BBC came under fire for scheduling Strictly Come Dancing against ITV1's The X Factor, only for the celebrity dance show to take a drubbing in the ratings. Now Top Gear is back on BBC2 but – what's this? – an hour later than its normal 8pm start time on a Sunday night, to avoid a clash with the ratings behemoth that is ... The X Factor. "We had no choice really," said Top Gear producer Andy Wilman. "X Factor on at the same time with the results show, Cowell on storming form, the whole nation glued – we know when to bravely bugger off and wait until the storm passes." If only they had thought of that with Strictly Come Dancing.

Many of Michael Jackson's fans have paid tribute to the deceased pop icon by seeing This Is It, the ghoulishly titled assemblage of rehearsal footage and outtakes that was rushed into theaters last month, just in time for Halloween (or, as Jackson used to call it, "every day"). But some of the beloved nutjob's greatest admirers have gone a step further and contacted him beyond the grave in a seance, which is about as believable as The Fourth Kind.
Derek Acorah, an English medium of some renown on that side of the pond, conducted the spirit-contacting and aired it on the U.K.'s Sky 1 channel. We have a YouTube clip after the jump. Acorah is the older, silver-haired gentleman in the video. The host asks him if people can ask Michael Jackson questions through him, and Acorah says yes, absolutely, the King of Pop would love that.
