After escaping the Manson family, she accepted Vincent Bugliosi's offer to be the prosecution's star witness against Charles Manson and his cohorts. Her testimony was considered key in their convictions and she was granted full immunity in exchange for her cooperation.

On August 8, 1969, she was the lookout and getaway driver for Charles 'Tex' Watson, Susan Atkins and Patricia Krenwinkel when they murdered Sharon Tate and four others at the urging of Charles Manson. She claimed she did not know what they had planned until the killing had started.

Gave birth to her second child while in jail, awaiting the Manson trial. She named her son Angel. Angel was the name of the hero in "Tess of the D'Urbervilles", the last book Sharon Tate ever read.

Is portrayed by Marilyn Burns in Helter Skelter (1976) and Clea DuVall in Helter Skelter (2004).

Her last name is the name of a British rock band.
