‘Anora’ wins the Oscar® for Best Picture during the live ABC Telecast of the 97th Oscars® (Credit:

The 2025 Oscars turned out to be a golden night for Anora. The critically acclaimed indie took home five Oscars including Best Director, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay (all Sean Baker), Best Actress (Mikey Madison), and Best Picture. Anora won in every category it was nominated in except Best Supporting Actor (Yura Borisov) which went to Kieran Culkin as expected.

Emilia Pérez went into Hollywood’s Big Night with 13 nominations, winning in just two: Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana) and Best Original Song. The Brutalist was recognized with three Oscars after earning 10 nominations. Wicked also earned 10 nominations and finished the night with two wins. And Dune: Part Two won the Achievement in Sound and Visual Effects Oscars out of its five nominations.

Hollywood’s biggest night has come to an end, and as usual, the Academy Awards delivered plenty of memorable moments.

But as much as we loved the James Bond tribute and the hilarious monologue from first-time host Conan O’Brien, the winners and their acceptance speeches were the focus of the night.

Several deserving stars took home their very first Oscars, including Mikey Madison, who headlined the biggest winner of the night, the audacious sex work dramedy Anora.

The indie flick took home five awards, and director Sean Baker took the stage for a number of gracious speeches. But he and Mikey weren’t the only victors at the 97th Oscars.

So without further ado, here’s your full list of the night...

On the heels of BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics Choice award wins, Peter Straughan has now won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for Conclave. This is Straughan’s second Oscar nomination and first win.

Straughan thanked “our crew, our amazing cast, producers and Robin House Productions, Film Nation, Indian Paintbrush, Focus Features” and a special thank you to his daughter Connie, “This is for you.”

The State of the Race

With the equivalent of a Best Picture win at the BAFTA Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, in addition to the multiple Best Screenplay awards the film has received from awards bodies like the Golden Globes and USC Scripter Awards, “Conclave” and screenwriter Peter Straughan are most likely a lock to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

And though this is not the first nomination for the “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” scribe, Straughan being the frontrunner does come as a bit of a surprise...

The writers behind the feature film Conclave and TV series Say Nothing took home top honors at the USC Scripter Awards, which were handed out Saturday night.

The Scripter Awards honor the best adapted projects of the year. Both the original authors and the screenwriters share the award.

Conclave was adapted by Peter Straughan from the novel by Robert Harris.

Say Nothing was honored for the episode “The People in the Dirt,” written by Joshua Zetumer. The show is based on the nonfiction book Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe.

The finalists and winners were determined by a jury chaired by USC professor and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences vp Howard Rodman. The awards were presented at the 37th annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards ceremony, a black-tie affair held at the Town & Gown ballroom on the campus of USC.

The 2025 NAACP Image Awards honored the best in Black excellence for the past year and we have the full list of winners!

The awards were given out across several nights with the main ceremony held on Saturday night (February 22) at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, Calif.

The show, hosted by Deon Cole, aired live on CBS.

Keke Palmer won the Entertainer of the Year award and Outstanding Motion Picture went to The Six Triple Eight, with the film’s star Kerry Washington also taking home the Best Actress prize.

Indie movies are getting the spotlight at the 2025 Independent Spirit Awards and we’re recapping all of the celebs who showed up on the red carpet!

The afternoon awards show is being held on Saturday (February 22) at the Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles.

The 16th annual African American Film Critics Association (Aafca) Awards brought together industry figures to recognize Black artists and filmmakers. Tyler Perry made a brief stop in Los Angeles to present the Beacon Award to Nicole Avant, producer of The Six Triple Eight, before flying out again the same night.

“There’s so many attacks on who we are, what our stories are,” Perry said on stage, stressing the importance of supporting Black storytellers. He described Avant as “Hollywood royalty,” highlighting her role as the daughter of philanthropist Jacqueline Avant and music executive Clarence Avant.

Avant expressed appreciation for receiving the honor, saying her parents would have been proud. “I’m sure they are beaming down. My mom would always tell me to go out in the world and be the light. Choose which side you’re on, and then play ball,” she said.

The African American Film Critics Association Awards returned to Beverly Wilshire on Wednesday to celebrate Black stories and diversity across cinema and the entertainment industry, honoring this year’s winners announced in December including its Best Picture winner Nickel Boys.

Founded in 2003, the Aafca is a Black critics organization that dedicates itself to covering film at large, emphasizing movies and TV showcasing the Black experience and/or written, directed, produced, or starring people from across the African diaspora.

“This has been a defining year for cinema, with an impressive array of stories that capture the complexity, resilience and beauty of the human experience,” president and co-founder Gil Robertson said about the 16th annual celebration. “We are proud to honor this year’s filmmakers and talent whose work continues to expand the scope of humanity on screen. These films do more than entertain — they amplify voices and perspectives that deserve to be heard,...

“I have to be honest, things, they feel really bad right now,” comedian Amber Ruffin said in her intro monologue at the 16th Annual African American Film Critics Association Awards, which she hosted in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. “Between the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion, the price of eggs and the price of Cowboy Carter tickets, it’s insane. Ticketmaster needs to be canceled. I don’t trust anything with ‘master’ in the name.”

Thus began a series of hilarious quips about the country’s socio-political climate from Ruffin, who’s written for Late Night with Seth Meyers for over a decade and hosted her own late-night talk show, The Amber Ruffin Show, from 2020 to 2023.

Sing Sing dominated this year’s African American Film Critics Association Awards, taking home a leading three prizes for Colman Domingo (Best Actor), Clarence Maclin (Best Supporting Actor), and Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar (Best Screenplay). The movie about the real-life Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York is up for three Oscars on March 2: Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Song (“Like a Bird”).

Nickel Boys also claimed a pair of top trophies, for Best Picture and RaMell Ross (Best Director). It’s nominated for two Oscars (Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay) for its retelling of the Colson Whitehead novel about a 1960s abusive reform school in Florida. Notable Aafca Best Picture winners throughout history include American Fiction (2024), Black Panther (2018), Get Out (2017), and Moonlight (2016).

The Piano Lesson, which was skunked at the Oscars, made due with two Aafca wins on Wednesday night for Danielle Deadwyler (Best Supporting Actress) and Best Ensemble.

Beyoncé and her daughter Blue Ivy Carter were among the winners during Night 2 of the 2025 NAACP Image Awards preshow ceremonies.

On the heels of her record-breaking night at the Grammys earlier this month, Beyoncé was named best female artist and also won best album for Cowboy Carter. Blue Ivy, meanwhile, won the award for best character voiceover performance in a film for her role in Mufasa: The Lion King.

Three other recent Grammy winners also were honored with NAACP Image Awards on Wednesday: Kendrick Lamar won best hip-hop/rap song for “Not Like Us,” Doechii was named best new artist, and Chris Brown won best male artist and best international song for “Hmmm” feat. Davido.

Let me start out here by acknowledging that I totally understand why some people will steer clear of supporting Emilia Pérez because of the offensive social media posts of its star from several years ago. You simply cannot watch this movie and not be bowled over by its cleverness and how distinctive and powerfully quirky it is.

Amazon MGM Studios’ Nickel Boys won a leading six awards Monday at the Black Reel Awards, including the group’s marquee Outstanding Film Award and Outstanding Director for RaMell Ross.

The awards, celebrating their 25th edition, honors the year’s best in Black cinematic excellence, were handed out Monday in a virtual ceremony.

Nickel Boys, adapted from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and nominated for the Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay Oscars, also won tonight for Outstanding Screenplay, Outstanding Emerging Director, Outstanding First Screenplay and Outstanding Cinematography.

Netflix’s The Piano Lesson won four awards including Outstanding Supporting Performance for Danielle Deadwyler, Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Hairstyling & Makeup and Outstanding Production Design.

Other notable winners tonight included Hard Truths star Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who won the gender-neutral Outstanding Lead Performance award. The Mike Leigh film also won Outstanding International Film.

The 2025 Oscar race took a detour across the pond on Sunday as the BAFTA Film Awards were handed out, with the hometown favorite Conclave finishing on top.

Conclave came in with a leading 12 nominations, and it finished with four overall wins — Best Film, Best British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Editing — on an evening when voters spread the wealth. The Brutalist scored for Best Director (Brady Corbet) and Best Actor (Adrien Brody). The Best Actress race featured a surprise, with Anora star Mikey Madison upsetting Golden Globe and Critics Choice winner Demi Moore (The Substance). The Ee BAFTA Film Awards happened this evening at the Royal Festival Hall in London, hosted once more by David Tennant.

Poking fun at Trump during his monologue, Tennant also offered the usual celebrity gags and had several stars singing part of The Proclaimers' "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)".

Cautioning audience members that there would not be an intermission as with nominated epic The Brutalist, Tennant also admonished winners to "keep your speeches the opposite of your films: nice and short."

At a BAFTA Awards where there was no clear frontrunner going into the ceremony, British Academy voters chose to largely share the spoils when it came to handing out honors.

But only one could win the top prize of best film, and this year that went to “Conclave,” which had entered the night with the most number of nominations (11). Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller wound up tying with Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” with four BAFTA wins each. Of its four, the 3.5-hour American epic won leading actor for Adrien Brody and director for Corbet.

Meanwhile, there was a surprise when Mikey Madison was named leading actress for “Anora” (one of two wins for Sean Baker’s sex worker comedy), with “The Substance” star Demi Moore’s seem by many as sure bet. Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror instead took home one award, for makeup and hairstyling.

Exclusive: BAFTA nominees Clarence Maclin and John ‘Divine G’ Whitfield will not be attending Sunday’s film awards ceremony after their applications for entry visas to the UK were denied.

Deadline has learned that the pair, who are both nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sing Sing, while Maclin is up for Supporting Actor as well, made multiple appeals to the UK Home Office but were unsuccessful in having the decisions reversed.

The visa refusals, we are told, were based on Maclin and Whitfiel’s criminal records in the U.S.

Maclin, who plays himself in Sing Sing, served more than 17 years at the eponymous maximum-security facility on a robbery conviction. He was released in 2012. Whitfield, who is portrayed in the film by Leading Actor BAFTA nominee Colman Domingo and turns up in a cameo, was incarcerated for almost 25 years at the prison and also released in 2012. Whitfield maintains he was wrongfully jailed.

As someone who tends to lean toward minimalist fashion, I’ve always been fascinated by Selena Gomez’s sleek and sophisticated approach to red carpet dressing. Her recent appearance at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival was consistent with her preference for feminine outfits with clean, elegant lines.

Selena, one of the eight recipients of this year’s Virtuoso Award, demonstrated that she doesn’t need to wear something grand to get attention. She only needs a white mini-dress and matching shoes to steal the show.

The Virtuosos Award honors a group of artists whose standout performances in their recent films have “propelled them into the forefront of national cinematic conversation.” Selena received the award for her role in the Spanish-language French musical crime film Emilia Pérez.

It’s now Netflix’s turn to roll the dice on a series adaptation of the iconic tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons, our sister site Deadline reports.

Titled The Forgotten Realms, the live-action project — which is still in early stages of development — is being executive-produced by Shawn Levy (Stranger Things), Dan Levine (Shadow and Bone), Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) and Hasbro Entertainment. Crevello will also write and serve as showrunner.

Oscar-nominated Sing Sing filmmaking duo Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley have been a partnership for as long as they’ve been making features. Back in 2016, their first film Transpecos, about border agents in the desert, cemented their like-minded connection, as they found they each approached narrative storytelling with the journalistic outlook of a documentarian.

Kwedar and Bentley regularly trade roles with each other, too. For Transpecos, Kwedar directed, then on their second feature, Jockey, Bentley took the helm. Kwedar directed Sing Sing, and now, for their next project, the Joel Edgerton-starrer Train Dreams, which recently debuted at Sundance, Bentley directs—such is the equal balance of their working relationship. And that true egalitarianism extends across their whole filmmaking process, through all the cast and crew, as they have equal-pay-and equity-for-all on their films Jockey and Sing Sing, now they plan to support other artists to make films this way...

A24’s prison theater drama Sing Sing, starring Colman Domingo, is set to begin streaming exclusively on Max on March 21. The film will debut on HBO linear on March 22 at 8:00 p.m. Et.

Directed by Greg Kwedar, Sing Sing follows Divine G (Domingo), who while imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other incarcerated men, including a wary newcomer (Clarence Maclin).

The film is inspired by the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at New York’s Sing Sing Correctional Facility. A notable aspect of the production was the casting of real-life formerly incarcerated individuals, many of whom were alumni of the Rta program. Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics has announced winners for the 2025 Dorian Awards, and it’s great news for genre fare like The Substance, Wicked, and I Saw the TV Glow.

Mubi’s body-horror movie The Substance won a leading five trophies, including Film of the Year, Demi Moore (Best Lead Performance), and Coralie Fargeat (Best Director), while Universal’s film adaptation of the Wicked musical claimed honors for Ariana Grande (Best Supporting Performance), Cynthia Erivo (Lgbtqia+ Film Trailblazer), and Jonathan Bailey (Rising Star).

Other movies with multiple victories were I Saw the TV Glow (LGBTQ Film of the Year and Jane Schoenbrun for LGBTQ Screenplay of the Year), Will & Harper (Documentary of the Year and LGBTQ Documentary of the Year), and Challengers (Justin Kuritzkes for Screenplay of the Year and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for Film Music of the Year).

Despite the recent massive shakeup in the Oscar race after Anora took down The Brutalist at the Critics Choice, Directors Guild, and Producers Guild awards, look for The Brutalist to walk away with the most trophies at the 78th annual BAFTA Awards this weekend, according to Gold Derby’s winner predictions.

Both movies are going head-to-head for Best Film, where the other three nominees are A Complete Unknown, Conclave, and Emilia Pérez.

The Brutalist, which scored nine total BAFTA bids, is now forecasted to dominate the field by winning five trophies: Best Film, Best Director for Brady Corbet, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Best Cinematography, and Best Score. The period piece tells the story of a Holocaust survivor who hopes to achieve the American Dream.

Update, February 13 10.40 GMT:Screenhas confirmed that Karla Sofia Gascon will not be attending the Bafta Film Awards this Sunday, February 16.

Gascon is nominated for best actress in a leading role; but has been largely absent from the awards circuit since the discovery of her past derogatory social media posts at the end of last month.

Netflix remains in contact with Gascon’s team.

For a period of time after its Cannes premiere, there was a major lingering question regarding Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice”: Would anyone even be able to see the film outside of its festival run? And so the prospect of Oscar nominations for stars Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong? Unfathomable.

“We are deeply, deeply grateful to obviously have had this recognition. It was just hard afterward. You never knew. It was so uncertain. A few days ago, a rumor sent the internet into a frenzy when it was reported that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande would perform a medley from “Wicked” to open the Oscars next month. Variety asked Erivo about the rumor at the Critics Choice Awards, and while she said, “I don’t know where this has come from,” the rumors have still been circulating since.

Asked by moderator and Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger during the Virtuosos panel how she was doing right now with the film under such public scrutiny, the BAFTA Award-nominated actress said, “I’m really good. Some of the magic has disappeared, but I choose to continue to be proud of what I’ve done, and I’m just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.”

Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez hit the red carpet at the 2025 Santa Barbara International Film Festival held at The Arlington Theatre on Sunday evening (February 9) in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The two actresses, who star in two heavily nominated movies across awards season, are among this year’s Virtuosos Award honorees.

Also in attendance were fellow honorees Mikey Madison, Clarence Maclin, John Magara, Fernanda Torres, Monica Barbaro, Sebastian Stan, as well as Jane Lynch and Sandra Oh, who posed with filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming.

The Virtuosos Award recognizes “a select group of talent whose noteworthy performances in films this season has propelled them into the forefront of national cinematic conversation,” per Variety.

Kieran Culkin, Harris Dickinson and Karla Sofia Gascon are also among this year’s honorees. Kieran is currently rehearsing for his upcoming Broadway show, and Karla is not attending any events following her recent controversy.

After delaying its awards ceremony for several weeks following the wildfires in Los Angeles, AARP the Magazine announced the winners of its annual Movies for Grownups Awards on Saturday, with A Complete Unknown going home as the big winner.

The show, hosted by Alan Cumming at the Beverly Wilshire, celebrates TV and film for older audiences, and this year also presented a career achievement award to Glenn Close. Though Conclave came into the ceremony with the most nominations, the film left empty handed. A Complete Unknown took best picture as Demi Moore and Adrien Brody won the top acting prizes, and Shogun was recognized as best TV series.

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards took place on Friday, February 7, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Three films—Wicked, Emilia Pérez, and The Substance—each won three awards. However, none of them claimed the top honor of Best Picture, which went to Anora. Interestingly, Anora didn’t win in any other category that night.

Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, won Best Director, making him only the third filmmaker to win the award for a musical. The others were Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge! and Damien Chazelle for La La Land. Chazelle later won an Oscar for directing La La Land, but Luhrmann and Chu didn’t even receive Oscar nominations for their films. Wicked also took home awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.

Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Song for “El Mal”, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.
