Rob Rader is a highly experienced business affairs attorney with eighteen years of professional experience for high-growth digital media companies, multi-billion dollar media companies, cable networks and major and boutique law firms, including over $7 billion of M&A and financings. He is experienced in digital media with a focus on the content, ad sales, mobile, apps and internet sectors, including such major digital companies as Amazon, Microsoft, YouTube, Machinima, Maker Studios, BuzzMedia, AOL, Collective Digital Network, the Orchard (Sony), Boing Boing, Federated Media, Electronic Arts and Activision. His large company domestic media work experience includes advising or negotiating with major companies, including MGM, CBS, NBC/Universal, Fox, Miramax/Disney, Goldman Sachs, Marvel Studios, DIRECTV, PBS, National Geographic, Univision and Danjaq (James Bond). Mr. Rader has major international experience with leading entertainment companies such as Yian Studios (China Film Group), Dalian Wanda, Toho-Towa (Japan), CJ Entertainment (Korea), AB Svensk Filmindustri (Sweden), HIT Entertainment, Mumbai Mantra (India) and the World Bank (for entertainment matters).
Prior to Ovation TV, Rader spent nine years at MGM as Vice President of Business Affairs where he helped run business affairs and operations for numerous departments, including the $1.2 billion home entertainment division. He also worked for seven years at the major law firms Mitchell, Silberberg & Knupp and Morrison & Foerster before joining a boutique digital media and entertainment firm as a name partner.
Rader's experience spans the gamut of legal, business and operational aspects of digital and traditional media with specialty fields in content, mobile, online/internet, interactive media, advertising and significant international experience. Rader's major skills are overseeing operations, including human resources and risk management/insurance issues; running in-house business departments for media companies, including supervising outside counsel for litigation, corporate, trademark and bankruptcy matters; and business development activities such as strategic partnerships and financing. He has handled all aspects of financing, acquisition, development, production, promotion, distribution and licensing of television, cable, film, video, consumer products, location-based entertainment, videogames, mobile and digital content for studios and outside clients including experience in all forms of distribution (digital, theatrical, television, non-theatrical, home entertainment, radio and stage theatrical) and ancillary exploitations.
At Ovation TV, Rader has responsibility for all business and legal matters, including production, distribution, marketing, litigation, intellectual property, real estate, corporate and human resources.
Mr. Rader graduated magna cum laude with highest honors from Harvard College. He obtained his Master's Degree from Stanford Graduate School in sociology. Mr. Rader attended Harvard Law School where he received his J.D. magna cum laude and delivered Harvard's graduate commencement address. He frequently speaks to the media and at industry events, including SAG, LA Business Today, Bloomberg TV and Producers Guild of America. He is an adjunct Professor of Law at Pepperdine Law School and has guest lectured at UCLA Extension and USC on digital media.
Mr. Rader is highly active in public service. He is as an elected Trustee and Vice Chair of Santa Monica College which owns the Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Center for the Performing Arts. He is on the Board of Directors of Downtown Santa Monica Inc., which runs the Third Street Promenade, and the KCRW Foundation, which supports the nation's leading independent public radio station KCRW.
Rader lives in Santa Monica with his two children Dashiell and Zora.
