Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have expanded on what fans can expect from the fifth and final season of their ’80s-set Netflix phenomenon.

The twin filmmakers were asked, during a Sunday night panel at the streamer’s Tudum Theater in Los Angeles, if there are new ’80s pop culture influences that will shape the final season, in the way that A Nightmare on Elm Street and its villain Freddy Kreuger shaped this summer’s two-part Season 4.

“[Season] 5, the way we see it, is kind of a culmination of all the seasons, so it’s got a little bit from each,” Ross Duffer told a packed house. “I think that what we’re trying to do is go back to the beginning a little bit, in sort of the tone of 1. But also scale-wise, it’s more aligned with what 4 is. So, hopefully, it’s got a little bit of everything.

Netflix has extended its multi-year partnership with Dark Horse Entertainment, through which Dark Horse gives the streamer a first look at IP for film and TV. Among their active development slate is a “Bang!” movie starring Idris Elba and “Mind Mgmt” from Curtis Gwinn.

Netflix and comic book publisher Dark Horse Entertainment have extended their partnership with a multiyear agreement will continue to give Netflix a first look at its IP for both film and TV. They’ve also announced several new projects, including “Bang!,” a feature starring Idris Elba and directed by David Leitch, based on the comic series by Matt Kindt and Wilfredo Torres.

The new arrangement comes as the third season of Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy,” based on the popular Dark Horse comic book series, reached the Netflix Global Top 10 in TV in 91 countries with 283.55 million hours viewed in its first four weeks (as of July 17).

Concrete Cowboy star Elba will feature in the spy thriller, with Leitch directing after his work on Bullet Train and Deadpool 2. Based on the comic series by Matt Kindt and Wilfredo Torres, the feature adaptation will be written by Kindt and Zak Olkewicz.

The citizens of Hawkins are one step closer to their final battle, as the “Stranger Things” writers’ room has officially started on the fifth and final season of the hit Netflix series.

The official Twitter account for the show’s writers’ room, @StrangerWriters, announced the news on Tuesday. In a tweet captioned “Day 1,” the account posted a picture of a whiteboard emblazoned with the logo for the final season.

Season 4 of Matt and Ross Duffer’s nostalgic sci-fi series ended on a major cliffhanger, with the season’s main villain Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) temporarily defeated, but succeeding in his scheme to merge the dark otherworld of the Upside Down with the sleepy Indiana town of Hawkins. The final season will presumably see the large ensemble cast fighting to protect the general populace and attempting to finally destroy the Upside Down.

Stranger Things creators and directors Matt and Ross Duffer have launched a new production company and revealed plans for streaming and stage spin-offs from the hit Netflix series.

The company, Upside Down Pictures, is in active development on a number of projects under the Duffer brothers’ overall deal with Netflix, though few details have been revealed.

The Duffer Brothers announced new production company Upside Down Pictures, with a slew of projects in the works including the “Stranger Things” spinoff and an upcoming stage play adaptation of the series.

According to The Duffer Brothers, Upside Down Pictures will “aim to create the kind of stories that inspired the Duffers growing up, stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism.”

Upside Down Pictures will be run by Hilary Leavitt and produce film and television projects as part of the overall deal with Netflix.

The “Stranger Things” stage play will be set within the world and mythology of the record-breaking Netflix series and will be produced by prolific and multi-award-winning producers Sonia Friedman, Stephen Daldry, and Netflix. Daldry will also direct. 21 Laps serves as Associate Producer.

The “Stranger Things” universe is expanding at Netflix, with the Duffer Brothers lining up multiple projects within the world they created for the series.

The project, details of which are being kept under wraps, is but one of five projects the siblings have unveiled as part of their nine-figure overall deal for Netflix. Netflix is celebrating the last two episodes of “Stranger Things 4” with a live, virtual watch party late Thursday night — letting fans tune in for a cast Q&a before the Volume 2 eps go live July 1.

For the virtual watch party, Netflix has tapped Scener, a co-viewing platform that lets people watch titles on different streaming services together online. The event is free to access, but you must be a current Netflix subscriber to watch the premiere.

Ahead of the two “Stranger Things 4” Volume 2 epsiodes’ premiere at 3 a.m. Et Friday on Netflix, the Scener watch party will host a Q&a starting at 2:15 a.m. Et with cast members David Harbour (Jim Hopper), Brett Gelman (Murray), Jamie Campbell Bower (Henry Creel/Vecna) and Joseph Quinn (Eddie Munson).

“Stranger Things 4” viewership has been so strong it’s spooky. The fourth season of Eleven & friends’ sci-fi exploits just broke the “Bridgerton” Season 2 record for most hours viewed within a show’s first 28 days and it only needed 17 days to do it. Through those two-and-a-half weeks, “Stranger Things” Season 4 amassed 781.04 million hours viewed, according to Netflix’s own internal tally. (“Stranger Things 4” added another 159.24 million hours this past week.)

Not only did “Stranger Things” Season 4 not require the full four weeks to shatter the previously-held English-language TV record, it also didn’t need its final two supersized episodes to do it.
