‘Popeye’s Revenge’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Emily Rose Mogilner, Connor Powles, Bruno Cryan, Karolina Ugrenyuk, Fyn Phoenixx, Danielle Ronald, Steven Murphy, Kelly Rian Sanson | Written by Harry Boxley | Directed by William Stead

The stream of public domain horror continues, this time it’s E.C. Segar’s iconic sailor Popeye who gets turned into a killer. The script by Harry Boxley, who has already scripted a trio of similar films, Piglet, Mouse of Horrors and Cinderella’s Curse re-imagines him as a boy born with huge forearms and freakish strength who accidentally kills one of his tormentors leading to the death of his parents and the young lad seemingly drowning.

Years later we find out he’s still alive as he kills off a trio of obnoxious YouTubers. From there we join Tara (Emily Rose Mogilner; 500) who is about to inherit the land where the house stood so she along with her boyfriend Dylan, Nick (Bruno Cryan; Treeline Essex Girls), Kathy,...

‘The Deadly Swarm’ Review
Image
Stars: Richard Kovacs, Connor Powles, Leona Clarke, Elliott Eason, Jon Kerr, Osian Dixon, Christabel Clark, May Kelly | Written and Directed by David Gregory

The Deadly Swarm is a great example of the downside to having a long run of good films to review. Because while you’re watching them, you know karma is going to send a real pile of shit to balance the score. And that’s certainly an apt description of this killer fly movie.

Dr. Holger Feldman is ecstatic, he’s managed to get a specimen of the rare vampire fly, and not just any specimen, this is a queen. His son Liam however is more concerned with how dangerous that fly is, apparently they wiped out the dinosaurs, not a meteor, than whether or not it could lead to a cure for the disease that killed his mother, and will kill him.

Liam may not have...

‘Jurassic Triangle’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Darrell Griggs, Toby Redpath, Sian Altman, Rob Kirtley, Connor Powles, Chrissie Wunna, Dorothea Jones | Written by Harry Boxley | Directed by Victor De Almeida

We’re barely seconds into Jurassic Triangle when three nameless individuals run past something odd, a pile of logs, a tarp and what looks like a gas-powered garden tiller. Why would that be odd? Because they’re trapped on an uncharted island that’s overrun with dinosaurs and other strange creatures, not the kind of place you can run off to Peavy Mart for some gardening supplies, or hang around long enough to plant a garden for that matter.

The hapless trio quickly become dinner for the dinos, and we cut to Drew is waking up from a nightmare and remembering he’s on a helicopter with Issac, Beth and their pilot Captain “Call me Andy” Rawson.

It’s one of two choppers carrying corporate types...

‘Medusa’s Venom’ VOD Review (Amazon Prime)
Image
Stars: Becca Hirani, Sarah T. Cohen, Connor Powles, May Kelly, Rita Di Tuccio, Ella Starbuck, Katiris Cooper, Asian Dixon, Keith Myles, Kate Sandison | Written by Craig McLearie | Directed by Chase Martins

I was a big fan of 2021’s Medusa, aka Medusa: Queen of Serpents, mainly down to the brilliant performance from Megan Purvis in the lead role of Carly and Sarah T.Cohen as her friend… and the fact the film was unlike anything producer Scott Jeffrey had been involved with at the time. For Medusa was a topical drama, wrapped up in the skin (pun intended) of a horror film; like the best of the genre the film was much more than skin deep (pun intended again), offering a layered tale about how women are treated in society. The film was all the more remarkable as it felt like one of the smallest productions Jeffrey and co. had put together.
