‘The Strangers: Chapter 2’ Going This Fall Instead Of ‘Saw XI’
Image
Lionsgate’s The Strangers: Chapter 2 will open in theaters on Sept. 26, 2025.

Saw XI, which had the date, has been moved off the calendar for the time being.

The first movie, Strangers: Chapter 1, debuted last May, and was one of the better-performing movies for Lionsgate in 2024, making $35.2M domestic, $48.1M worldwide.

In Chapter 2, Renny Harlin directs Riverdale‘s Madelaine Petsch as well as Gabriel Basso and Ema Horvath. Producers are Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Alastair Burlingham, Charlie Dombek on the horror franchise movie. Alan R. Cohen & Alan Freedland wrote the screenplay.

The Strangers movie franchise kicked off in 2008 at Focus Features and starred Liv Tyler in the Bryan Bertino directed-and-written movie. That pic followed James Hoyt and Kristen McKay who visit an isolated vacation home only to encounter a rude surprise when three masked assailants make their stay a nightmare. The movie was massive on a...

They say, “The studio is looking to find a better date for the film.”

Netflix's Scariest Movies
Image
Netflix has become a go-to service for horror fans, thanks to the success of Wednesday, Stranger Things, and the various series from Mike Flanagan. In addition to TV shows, it carries a ton of horror movies, but with such a surplus of content, it's hard to choose what to watch especially for someone looking for quality. Since Netflix's site catalog changes often, it's easy to miss available movies before the company removes them.

Netflix's current offer of horror films covers many different subgenres. From witches to evil scientists, Netflix has some of the best horror movies ever made. These options are great for those who are seeking a truly thrilling time. The only problem will be trying to sleep with the lights off after watching them.

Updated on July 25, 2024, by Robert Vaux: Since Netflix updates its catalog often, this list has been updated to keep up with this streaming site.

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ Trailer: Madelaine Petsch Hides from Masked Intruders in Franchise Prequel
Image
What do you do when they come for you? Beloved horror franchise “The Strangers” is getting a revamp, courtesy of prequel “The Strangers: Chapter 1” starring “Riverdale” alum Madelaine Petsch. Two more sequels are due later this year, all from “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger” director Renny Harlin.

In this first film, Petsch stars as a young woman who is trying to start a new life with her fiancé. Yet, during a road trip stop in a remote vacation rental in the woods, the couple become the prey of a mysterious gang of masked strangers who attack without warning or reason. Froy Gutierrez, Gabriel Basso, and Ema Horvath co-star.

Sure, it may sound like a run-of-the-mill slasher, but “The Strangers” franchise has a haunting allure, thanks to its creation by filmmaker Bryan Bertino. The director has a “story by” credit for “Chapter 1,” which is helmed by Harlin and written by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland.

Netflix Nabs Erotic Thriller Spec Script ‘Undying’ From Ben Ketai
Ben Ketai
Netflix has acquired an erotic thriller spec script “Undying” from writer Ben Ketai, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.

According to Deadline, which first reported the news, the deal was for mid-six against seven figures. Shawn Levy will produce the project via his 21 Laps Banner with Dan Cohen, and Dan Levine.

Moera Ainai is overseeing the project and Ketai will also serve as executive producer.

“Undying” centers on a woman, suffocated by motherhood, who has an affair with a man she hasn’t seen since high school only to discover a terrifying secret.

Before the sale, Ketai had recently written and directed “River Wild,” a modern adaptation of Universal’s 1994 thriller of the same name. Featuring Leighton Meester, Taran Killam, and Adam Brody, the movie enjoyed several weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 after its release on the platform.

Ketai also played multiple roles as the creator, writer,...

Is The River Wild Based On A True Story?
Image
The 2023 film The River Wild and its 1994 predecessor are not based on true stories, so viewers can rest assured that real-life tragedy did not occur during a whitewater rafting trip in Idaho. The original River Wild movie from 1994 drew inspiration from a fly-fishing article, highlighting the intriguing connection between two seemingly unrelated activities. The remake of the 1994 film was motivated by the original thriller but features a different storyline focused on estranged siblings and their disturbed childhood friend.

The River Wild documents a terrifying whitewater rafting trip where members of the group start turning up dead, so, of course, one must wonder if the film is based on a true story (and if they should avoid off-the-grid whitewater rafting trips in the future). The 2023 thriller movie, starring Leighton Meester, Adam Brody, and Taran Killam, focuses on three characters — Joey, Trevor, and Gray — reuniting to embark on a treacherous journey through desolate woods in Idaho.

Is River Wild A Remake? How It Connects To Meryl Streep's 1994 Movie
Image
Where to Watch Powered by "River Wild" is a new take on the 1994 film, not a remake or reboot, according to the team behind the production. It is a standalone sequel set in the "universe" of the original. The 2023 version of "River Wild" introduces original characters and a new setting in Hungary, differing from the 1994 film's Idaho setting and characters. The new film focuses on the inner dynamics and tensions of a group of siblings and their childhood friend, creating a more intimate and gritty story set in an exciting river adventure.

The 2023 iteration of River Wild changes up the formula of the 1994 Meryl Streep classic, but it's not quite a remake. The original, underrated adventure-meets-thriller film is remembered well as a box-office hit. The movie chronicles the white-water rafting trip of the Hartman family, which turns from an exciting chance to bond into a truly terrifying ordeal. The River Wild...

‘River Wild’ Characters: Joey, Gray & Trevor, Explained: Who Dies? Who Survives?
Image
River Wild, a reimagining of the 1994 thriller The River Wild, helmed by director Ben Ketai, weaves a storyline centered around Joey, a young woman, and her estranged brother Gray, as they embark on a thrilling whitewater rafting expedition. Two other women and Gray’s childhood friend Trevor also join them on this trip.

As the story unfolds, the film explores the intricacies of the characters, each shrouded in mystery and harboring hidden depths. Joey and Gray’s fractured relationship provides a compelling backdrop, showcasing their emotion and the tension in their journey. However, it is Trevor’s presence that becomes a focal point of suspense in the narrative. Following the revelation of a shocking twist, we discover that Trevor is a convicted parolee whose presence is triggering a sense of impending danger among the group. Despite the apparent red flag, Gray remains undeterred in his decision to include Trevor on their expedition,...

Adam Brody Recalls Failed Guardians of the Galaxy Audition
Image
Adam Brody tried to audition for the role of Star Lord in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but ultimately lost to Chris Pratt. Brody admits that Pratt was a better fit for the role, acknowledging his physicality and tonal portrayal of the character. Brody is not a fan of method acting, finding it boring and uncomfortable, preferring to turn off and on his emotions when needed for his performances.

Adam Brody really wanted to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe playing one of its most iconic characters, but he is definitely happy with the actor that ultimately got the part.

It may be hard to imagine a different person playing Star Lord aka Peter Quill in the MCU, since Chris Pratt has done something amazing with the character and owed it completely from the very beginning. But, of course, he was not the only actor that tried to get the part. The Oc and Shazam!

Adam Brody on ‘F—ing Boring’ Method Acting and His Failed ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Audition: ‘I Wanted That One’
Image
The new “River Wild” is a reimagining of Curtis Hanson’s classic 1994 thriller starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Bacon and David Strathairn about a rafting trip that takes a deadly turn.

In the new version, Adam Brody plays a heavily-tattooed ex-convict who will stop at nothing to make sure he never returns to prison. The movie also stars Brody’s wife Leighton Meester and Taran Killam, and it was directed and co-written by the trio’s longtime friend Ben Ketai.

Brody’s violent scenes with Meester are so frightening that one wonders why the couple — who’ve been married for nine years and have two children together — signed on to the film. “I tried to kill her for a fair amount of the movie,” Brody says on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “I wouldn’t have picked this for us. It came to me… fully formed...

Adam Brody and Leighton Meester Reimagine a Classic in the River Wild Trailer
Image
A new classic from the 90s will present a modernized version from the hand of director Ben Ketai (Beneath), with Adam Brody and Leighton Meester as protagonists. This is River Wild, a 1994 film starring Kevin Bacon and Meryl Streep, which new reimagining will be released on digital, Blu-ray and DVD on August 1.

This Thursday, Universal Pictures released the first trailer for the movie, which anticipates a family adventure that goes terribly wrong when they get cut in the rapids, while someone on the boat seems to be determined to sabotage their trip:

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

“Joey fears there could be trouble ahead after her brother Gray invites Trevor, a childhood friend with a troubled past, on their whitewater rafting adventure with two tourists. Once they become stranded in r aging rapids, the thrill seeking trip quickly turns from exciting to utterly terrifying as the rafters...

Leighton Meester & Adam Brody in 'River Wild' Remake Official Trailer
Image
"Don't look back - just run!" Surprise - another remake coming our way! Universal Home Entertainment has revealed an official trailer for a remake of the fun 90s river thriller The River Wild, this new one directed by Ben Ketai. It may not come as a surprise they're dumping this one direct-to-video in just a few weeks, without much buzz at all. The original film from 1994, starring Meryl Streep & David Strathairn, is a cheesy but actually a pretty solid adventure thriller with some good twists in it (I remember seeing it in theaters and also renting it on VHS after). 2023's The River Wild follows a pair of siblings who love but distrust each other as they embark on a white-water rafting trip with a small group. One of their old friends from growing up, who also joins them, turns out to be more dangerous than he appears. Stuck in the rapids,...

River Wild trailer: Leighton Meester, Adam Brody thriller reimagining gets August release
Image
Almost exactly one year ago today, we heard that real-life couple Leighton Meester and Adam Brody, along with Taran Killam (Meester’s co-star in the TV series Single Parents) would be starring in a reimagining of the 1991 thriller The River Wild, which starred Meryl Streep, David Straithairn, and Joseph Mazzello as a family that had the bad luck of crossing paths with criminals played by Kevin Bacon and John C. Reilly while on a river rafting trip. Now Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that they’ll be giving the reimagining, which drops the definite article and is simply called River Wild, a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 1st – and along with this announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer, which you can watch in the embed above!

‘The Strangers: Prey at Night’ VOD Review
Stars: Christina Hendricks, Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman, Emma Bellomy, Damian Maffei, Lea Enslin | Written by Bryan Bertino, Ben Ketai | Directed by Johannes Roberts

Loosely inspired by the Manson Family murders (that’s what it means when it says “Based on a true story”), creepy slasher flick The Strangers became a hit back in 2008, with its tale of three masked, mostly silent figures terrorising Liv Tyler and husband Scott Speedman. That film made $82m from a $9m budget, so it’s somewhat surprising that it’s taken ten years to get the inevitable sequel off the ground. Still, here it is, and while it doesn’t exactly improve on its predecessor, it’s still a perfectly serviceable slasher movie that does exactly what you expect, with a modicum of style to boot.

Directed by Johannes Roberts (who made last year’s low budget shark thriller 47 Metres Down), The Strangers: Prey at Night...

Back in March, Aviron Pictures unleashed a trio of masked psychopaths when The Strangers: Prey at Night descended into theaters and proceeded to scare the crap out of all of us.

Directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) from a script penned by Ben Ketai and Bryan Bertino, the latter of whom is responsible for The Strangers in the first place, Prey At Night followed a family’s innocent road trip as it took a “dangerous turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park to stay with some relatives and find it mysteriously deserted. Under the cover of darkness, three masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test the family’s every limit as they struggle to survive.”

After a successful theatrical run, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is now set to bring the film to Blu-ray and DVD with tons of exclusive bonus content, including a never before seen alternate ending,...

‘StartUp’s Edi Gathegi & Otmara Marrero Talk Season 3, Inspiration & Betting On Bitcoin – Next Generation TV
SDCC 2022
“I think scope and relationships have evolved,” StartUp star Edi Gathegi says of how the Sony Crackle tech thriller series has changed going into its third season. “We go to places that are much bigger than any of us thought we could do on that network,” the Twilight Saga alum adds. “I think one of the themes about this upcoming season is loyalty and responsibility.”

Gathegi was joined by fellow cast member Otmara Marrero on the latest installment of Next Generation TV. The duo came ready and on point to discuss where StartUp has been, where it’s going and what the series means coming out of its sophomore season.

“They see the underdog win a lot in this show,” Marrero declares of the audience’s Pov of her digital-currency-creating anti-hero Izzy Morales and the characters portrayed by Gathegi and Adam Brody in the series created by Ben Ketai. “Even...

‘The Strangers: Prey at Night’ Review

If you missed the return of Dollface, Pin-Up Girl, and Man in the Mask in theaters, you can invite them into your own home on May 22nd with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's digital release of The Strangers: Prey at Night (read Heather Wixson's review here), followed by a June release of an unrated Blu-ray and DVD (plus digital) that includes an alternate ending:

Press Release: Universal City, California, April 11, 2018 – Inspired by the 2008 cult classic The Strangers, The Strangers: Prey at Night is based on real events surrounding a family struggling to survive as they are attacked on their vacation by a trio of masked psychopaths that hunt their prey with seemingly no rhyme or reason. Director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) pays homage to The Strangers by bringing back the infamous masked villains -- Dollface, Pin-Up Girl and Man in the Mask -- and incorporates elements of the ‘80s...

Review: The Strangers: Prey At Night is a Worthy and Wickedly Fun Sequel
If you would have told me back when the sequel was first announced that The Strangers: Prey at Night could potentially end up as one of my favorite films of 2018, I would have told you that you were completely off your rocker. And yet, here we are, with Johannes Roberts’ sequel defying all of my (admittedly low, but more on that later) expectations to deliver a more than worthy sequel to Bryan Bertino’s The Strangers that captures the unsettling nature of the original, and yet puts in some extra effort that makes Prey at Night still feel like it’s doing its own thing at the same time. As far as modern slashers go, Roberts has confidently crafted one wickedly fun thrill ride that reminds us that it is never wise to answer your door for unknown visitors, especially late at night.

The Strangers: Prey at Night starts off...

The Strangers: Prey At Night Review
If there’s one thing Johannes Roberts’ pre-screening introduction confirmed before The Strangers: Prey At Night, it’s that he *obsessively* respects the profoundness of John Carpenter’s genre contributions – to the point where the pic is a stalkerish mixtape of all the filmmaker’s favorite bits.

Subtle hints Hammer-to-the-head homages evoke Halloween’s “The Shape,” roll with The Fog and grind Christine’s gears in an atmospherically overt love-letter to Carpenter that Roberts signs in blood. Dash in a bit of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for flavor and you wonder what individuality this Strangers “offshoot” presents – until Roberts’ execution pushes such thoughts out of your mind. He may be riffing off recognizable horrors staples, but the director’s devotion to royalty is vicious and respectfully realized. Right down to a score you’d believe Carpenter recorded himself.

Screenwriter Ben Ketai (who rewrote Bryan Bertino’s existing script) introduces...

‘The Strangers: Prey at Night’ Film Review: Slasher Sequel Is Half a Good Horror Movie
Bryan Bertino
Writer-director Bryan Bertino’s thriller “The Strangers” premiered in 2008, and it has taken 10 years to get this sequel, subtitled “Prey at Night,” on screen. Bertino is a co-writer this time (with Ben Ketai) for director Johannes Roberts (“47 Meters Down”), who starts out this second film rather slowly but eventually takes some advantage of his opportunity here. The first film had Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman terrorized by masked assailants at an isolated summer home in the country, and Bertino highlighted the randomness of their ordeal. (He has said that he was inspired by coverage of the Manson Family...

‘The Strangers: Prey at Night’ Review: A Lean, Mean Sort-Of Sequel That Was Worth the Wait
Bryan Bertino
There’s a scene in Bryan Bertino’s film “The Strangers” that handily encapsulates the film’s nervy brand of terror, one so good and simple that it served as the film’s poster image when the 2008 feature first hit theaters: it’s Liv Tyler, standing alone in her kitchen, looking out into what seems to be — what should be — an empty house. Behind her, a masked figure lurks, half-hidden in shadows and entirely unknown to Tyler’s character. When the scene unspools in the film, it’s a jolt of pure terror, with the masked man sliding into frame, then slowly moving out of it. Tyler’s Kristen McKay is none the wiser, and that the scene doesn’t lead to an instant slash of bloody violence is mostly incidental.

There will be violence later, plenty of it, but it’s the dread of it all, the senselessness of the criminals,...

Chaos Ensues In This All-New Clip For The Strangers: Prey At Night
Entertainment Tonight (h/t Bloody Disgusting) has today unleashed some new footage for long-in-development sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night, and it’s enough to strike fear in even the toughest of horror aficionados.

As the title suggests, it’s the much-anticipated continuation of Bryan Bertino’s cult favorite – a continuation 10 years in the making – and it once again chronicles the collective killing spree conducted by everyone’s favorite strangers: Dollface, Pin-up Girl and the Man in the Mask.

On paper, they sound like the worst superhero team in the history of superhero teams, but don’t let the frivolous nicknames fool you; together, The Strangers form the deadliest lineup in the land, and Et’s eerie clip is not for the faint of heart. Granted, it’s more concerned with Prey at Night‘s leading family – a family made up of Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) et. al – as they...

Dollface Comes Knocking In Latest Pic For The Strangers: Prey At Night
Dollface, Pin-up Girl and the Man in the Mask.

On paper, they sound like the worst superhero team in the history of superhero teams, but don’t let the frivolous nicknames fool you; together, The Strangers form the deadliest lineup in the land, and Bloody Disgusting had today revealed an exclusive close-up of Dollface.

Emma Bellomy has been cast in the role for The Strangers: Prey at Night, Johannes Roberts’ (47 Meters Down) horror sequel 10 years in the making. She’ll be flanked by The Walking Dead‘s Lea Enslin and Damian Maffei (Christmas with the Dead, Ghost Lake), who have agreed to play Pin-up Girl and the Man in the Mask, respectively, Prey at Night‘s other two psychopaths.

And make no mistake, they really are psychopaths. With only six weeks to go until release, and after Thursday’s horror showcase, Bloody Disgusting has doubled down on Pin-up Girl, who...

The Strangers: Prey At Night Secures R-Rating
It’s official: The Strangers: Prey at Night has received an R-rating this week from the MPAA for “horror violence and terror throughout, and for language.” Not that this should surprise anyone, mind you, given the content of the film and the fact that the original was also rated R, but it is nice to hear nonetheless. After all, in an age where so many horror movies are watered down for mass consumption, it’s exciting to see that they won’t be holding back here.

Set for a release on March 9th, this new effort will act as a soft reboot for the series, given that it’s made room for Christina Hendricks, Bailee Madison, Lewis Pullman and Martin Henderson, who play a family on a road trip. Unfortunately, though, things don’t go so well for them, as three dangerous psychos – Emma Bellomy as Dollface, Lea Enslin as...

Strangers: Prey at Night Trailer #2 Brings Masked Maniacs Out of Hiding
The masked killers are back in a brand new trailer for Strangers: Prey at Night. The original Strangers was released nearly a decade ago and, despite being a financial success, never managed to get a sequel going. That all changes very soon, as The Strangers 2 is coming our way on March 9, 2018. Now, Aviron Pictures has released a brand new, full-length trailer for the horror sequel that doubles down on the tension.

This new trailer for The Strangers: Prey At Night is probably everything that fans of the original could hope for. It keeps the premise familiar enough, with three very unsettling murderers wearing masks terrorizing an unsuspecting group of people. Yet, this time, it's an entire family in a very different setting at a secluded trailer park. As for the footage itself? It's pretty slick and incredibly intense. There's a creaky swing set, which is always a sign of bad...

The Strangers: Prey At Night Debuts Chilling Second Trailer
“Never underestimate the kindness of strangers.”

It’s going on 10 years since the arrival of Bryan Bertino’s cult horror hit, The Strangers, but in only a few weeks’ time, those masked hoodlums – better known as Dollface, Pin-Up Girl and the Man in the Mask – will return to haunt our dreams.

That’s right, The Strangers: Prey At Night is now beginning to rear its big, ugly head over the horizon, and in a last-ditch attempt to drum up excitement, Fandango has today premiered the sequel’s chilling second trailer. It’s a little longer than the first (122 seconds over the original, 60-second preview), so if you’re wanting to preserve every ounce of tension – don’t forget about the jump scares, either! – until March 9th, perhaps it’s best to skip this one for the time being?

Granted, it’s fairly light on story details, as we see Christina Hendricks...

The Strangers: Prey at Night Brings More Masked Terror in these Two Stills
Tagline: "Let Us Prey." A couple of new stills have been released for the second The Strangers film. The first film released in 2008. The Strangers: Prey at Night, which has been influenced by the first film, is set for a March theatrical release. The two stills show more characters, one played by Christina Hendricks and the other by Bailee Madison. A masked villain turns up, while more terror lays just around the corner. As well, a second poster has been released and it can be found here. Bryan Bertino wrote and directed the first film, based on some of his real life experiences. In this second film, Bertino has written the script, with Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) directing. The Strangers: Prey at Night does look like a decent chiller, with more details coming soon as the film reaches its March 9th release date. Release Date: March 9th, 2018 (Theatrical). "Is it even any good?"

"It's quite entertaining, yes."

"Well, ok then."

Indeed, Deadline brought word this week from the StartUp team that the show won't be going anywhere.
