Disney+ has unveiled the trailer for “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld,” the streamer’s highly anticipated original series starring Daniel Brühl as the iconic fashion designer.

Produced by Gaumont (“Lupin”) and Jour Premier, the six-part series chronicles the rise of Karl Lagerfeld through the world of 1970s Parisian high fashion. It will be available to stream on Disney+ in France and international territories, and on Hulu in the U.S., on June 7. “Becoming Karl” world premiered at Canneseries, where it received a standing ovation and warm reviews.

The lushly lensed series opens in 1972, when the 38-year-old Lagerfeld is a ready-to-wear designer, unknown to the general public. He falls in love with a sultry dandy, Jacques de Bascher (Théodore Pellerin), who inspires him to challenge himself and act on his ambition to become the world’s most famous French fashion designer. Hulu has released the official trailer for the upcoming drama Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, which stars Daniel Brühl as the iconic couturier. The series will premiere with all six episodes on Friday, June 7, on Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally.

Exclusive: Goodfellas has acquired world sales rights for Emilio Estevez’s The Way: Chapter 2, reuniting the actor-director with the cast members of his original 2010 hit, father Martin Sheen, Yorick Van Wageningen and James Nesbitt.

The sequel revisits protagonist Tom (Sheen) a decade after his first pilgrimage on Spain’s El Camino de Santiago in the footsteps of his deceased son Daniel (Estevez), as he reconnects with his walking companions Joost (van Wageningen) and Jack (Nisbitt).

Now embedded with Doctors Without Borders in northern Nigeria, performing surgery in a war zone, Tom is sent a copy of Jack’s bestselling book based on their shared experience, in which a disturbing secret is revealed.

Enraged, he leaves to search for Jack and find answers to questions that have haunted him for a decade. His journey reunites him with Joost and leads them through Amsterdam, Dublin, Brussels and France before returning to Spain and the Camino.

Goodfellas has boarded Claire Burger’s anticipated coming-of-age drama Langue Etrangère, starring Chiara Mastroianni and Nina Hoss, ahead of this week’s Rendez-Vous with France Cinema this week in Paris.

Langue Etrangère is about teenage pen pals in France and Germany and is produced by Anatomy of a Fall producer Marie-Ange Luciani’s Les Films de Pierre with Belgium’s Les Films du Fleuve and Germany’s Razor Film Produktion. Burger wrote the film in collaboration with The Five Devils’ Léa Mysius.

Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral’s Srab Films has a slate of social justice titles.

Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral’s Paris-based Srab Films, which is heading to Toronto next month with Ladj Ly’s Les Indésirables, has unveiled a slew of projects including the next features from Ly and Alice Diop, whose Saint Omer the company produced last year.

Ly is in the writing stages of the third of what will be a trilogy of titles set against the same backdrop of his native Montfermeil neighbourhood following Les Misérables (also produced by Srab) and Les Indésirables.

Start fitting Daniel Brühl for a pair of big black sunglasses and a ponytail. The German star has signed on to play the late fashion designer, and style icon, Karl Lagerfeld in the new Disney+ series, Kaiser Karl, Disney announced Thursday.

Brühl, most recently seen in Edward Berger’s nine-time Oscar nominated All Quiet on the Western Front for Netflix, will play the young Lagerfeld in the series, which tracks his rise in the French fashion world in the early 1970s.

Arnaud Valois (Bpm (Beats per Minute)) and Alex Lutz (Vortex) will play Lagerfeld’s fashion rivals Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, with Quebec actor Théodore Pellerin (Never Rarely Sometimes Always) playing Largerfeld’s love interest Jacques de Bascher. Agnès Jaoui (Singing Jailbirds) plays Gaby Aghion, the founder of the Chloé fashion brand, one of the first to recognize Lagerfeld’s talent.

Gaumont and Jour Premier are producing the six-part series for Disney+ France.

In 1972, a 38-year-old Karl Lagerfeld aspired to become the most famous French fashion designer, at a time when Yves Saint Laurent reigned supreme. Lagerfeld went on to become the head designer and creative director of Chanel, Fendi and his own label.

The series will also explore the rivalry between Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent’s partner Pierre Berge, as well as his love story with Jacques de Bascher.

Founded more than 25 years ago by Manuel Catteau, independent French producer and distributor Zed has become over the years a major player in the documentary field. At TV market Unifrance Rendez-vous in Biarritz, Zed revealed to Variety the acquisition of three ambitious history documentary projects, which are available for presales.

“Ukraine 1933: Seeds of Hunger,” a documentary by Guillaume Ribot, produced by Les Films Du Poisson for France Télévisions, recalls the tragedy experienced by Ukrainians between 1931 and 1933: the Holodomor, the great famine organized by Stalin to punish those who refused the collectivization of the countryside and communist ideology, resulted in the deaths of more than 4 million of them.

“The tragedy was disclosed to the world by an intrepid Welsh journalist, Gareth Jones, one of the bravest whistleblowers in history,” Zed states. The completion is scheduled for fall 2022.

Jacques Audiard, whose latest film “The Sisters Brothers” with John C. Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix and Jake Gyllenhaal earned him a best director prize at Venice, will make his TV debut with the Canal Plus hit original spy series “The Bureau.”

The Palme d’Or winning director of “Dheepan” will direct some episodes of the fifth and final season of “The Bureau,” along with the series creator Eric Rochant, Jérôme Salle, Thomas Bidegain, Anna Novion, Samuel Collardey and Mathieu Kassovitz, who is also the star of “The Bureau.”

Audiard, one of France’s most revered filmmakers, also co-wrote the fifth season of “The Bureau” with Bidegain, his writing partner on several films including “The Sisters Brothers,” as well as Cécile Ducrocq, Capucine Rochant, Hippolyte Girardot, Dominique Baumard, Camille de Castelnau, Olivier Dujols, Raphaël Chevènement, with the collaboration of Valentine Milville.

The Les Arcs Coproduction Village (Dec 12-15), held as part of the Les Arcs European Film Festival (Dec 12-19), has unveiled the projects for its 7th edition.

A total of 25 projects have been selected for the three-day development and financing platform, which has previously showcased festival hits including Lazlo Nemes’ Son Of Saul, Alice Rohrwacher’s The Wonders, Grimur Hakonarson’s Rams and Runar Runarsson’s Sparrows.

This year’s line-up includes projects from 13 countries and five from Norway, selected as part of this year’s Norwegian Focus. Eight debut features are included in the selection.

Representatives of the projects will have one-to-one pre-scheduled meetings with producers, sales agents and distributors.
